Surprise tactic pays off for UAE in Women's T20WC Qualifier
Bangkok, May 10 (UNI) In a bizarre turn of events, after accumulating 192 runs from their first 16 overs, the UAE decided to retire out their entire batting line-up under overcast conditions to save themselves time in the Women's T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier encounter against Qatar.
The move paid off later in the game, when Esha Oza's side bowled Qatar out for merely 29, thus securing a mammoth win and a heavy net run rate advantage.
The UAE batted first and racked up quick runs on the back of inspiring performances from Oza (113 from 55 balls with 19 boundaries including five sixes) and Theertha Satish (74 off 42 with 11 fours).
However, with rain looming, UAE management - led by experieced all-rounder and coach Ahmed Raza - decided at the 16-over mark that they had more than enough runs to play with.
If this were a first-class fixture, the side might as well have declared, but given that it was a T20I encounter, UAE had no such option.
The Asian side then came up with a rare tactical decision, calling all their batters to 'pad up' and deciding to retire them out.
This meant the UAE were eligible to immediately have a go at the Qatar with the ball, and bowled out the side within the 12th over mark to secure a remarkable win by 163 runs.
The victory was UAE's second on the trot at the Asia Qualifier event and puts them in the box seat to progress to the Super Three stage of the event.
The three winners from the group stage of the tournament progress to the Super Three phase, with the top two teams then progressing to the Global Qualifier at the start of next year.
Brief score:
United Arab Emirates: 192
Qatar: 29

Sinner stuns Djokovic to reach first Roland-Garros final
Paris, June 7 (UNI) World No.1 Jannik Sinner produced a commanding performance to defeat Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 7-6(3) in a gripping Roland-Garros semifinal on Friday night, halting the Serbian's pursuit of a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title. With the win, Sinner stretched his Grand Slam winning streak to 20 matches and his set tally to 29, advancing to his third consecutive major final after triumphs at the US Open and Australian Open. The 23-year-old Italian also became the first player born in the 2000s to reach the Roland-Garros final. Sinner now sets up a mouth-watering title clash on Sunday against Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, marking the first men's Grand Slam final between two players born in the 2000s. The semifinal showcased a riveting battle between generations – the current standard-bearer in men's tennis versus the all-time Grand Slam leader. Djokovic, 38, was aiming to break new ground yet again, but despite moments of brilliance, he found himself outgunned by Sinner's ferocity and precision. From the onset, Sinner asserted control with aggressive baseline play and broke Djokovic early in the first set to take a 3-2 lead, sealing it 6-4. Djokovic, who had received treatment earlier in the tournament for a knee issue, fought valiantly and thrilled the spectators with vintage shotmaking, including a dazzling exchange in the second set that drew roars from Court Philippe-Chatrier. However, even when Djokovic broke back at 5-5 in the second set, Sinner responded with relentless pressure, reclaiming the momentum with a forehand drive volley and a second-serve ace to clinch the set 7-5. The third set turned into a dogfight, with Djokovic saving break points and holding three set points at 5-4. But Sinner, unshaken, saved them all and dominated the deciding tiebreak 7-3 to close out the match in just over three hours. Speaking after the match, Sinner hailed Djokovic as a "role model" and admitted the enormity of the occasion: "It was a special occasion for me, in a semifinal of a Grand Slam against Novak. I had to step up, I had to play the best tennis I could." Djokovic, who has won 24 Grand Slam titles since 2008, including three at Roland-Garros, showed flashes of his enduring brilliance but was ultimately overpowered by the speed and shot-making of a younger rival whose rise now seems unstoppable. With this victory, Sinner joins the elite company of Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray as one of the few men this century to reach three successive Grand Slam finals. The men's final on Sunday promises to be a generational clash between Sinner and Alcaraz, with the Italian seeking to avenge recent defeats and secure a second consecutive major title. UNI BDN ARN

Uzbekistan, Jordan Qualify For 2026 FIFA World Cup; China Eliminated
Three additional Asian teams have secured their spots for the 2026 FIFA World Cup following the latest round of qualifiers. Uzbekistan and Jordan will make their tournament debuts, while South Korea has extended its streak to 11 consecutive appearances. Conversely, China has been eliminated with one match remaining. Uzbekistan clinched its place with a goalless draw against the United Arab Emirates in Group A. This result was sufficient for the Central Asian team, featuring Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Roma forward Eldor Shomurodov, to become the fifth team to qualify for the tournament, joining Japan, New Zealand, Iran, and Argentina. In the same group, Qatar, the host of the 2022 World Cup, narrowly defeated 10-man Iran 1-0. Both Qatar and the UAE will advance to the playoffs, where two additional World Cup spots will be contested, according to Xinhua. In Group B, Jordan made history by qualifying for its first World Cup with a 3-0 victory over Oman. South Korea, a regular participant on the world stage, secured a 2-0 away win against Iraq to maintain its perfect run since 1986. Iraq will join the playoffs, while the final playoff spot from the group will be decided between Oman and Palestine, who face off in the final round. China's slim hopes were extinguished in Group C after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia in Jakarta. Ole Romeny converted a penalty just before halftime to secure the win and send Indonesia to the playoff round, while China was left to reflect on another unsuccessful campaign. Bahrain also exited contention following a 2-0 loss to Saudi Arabia. In another match, Australia claimed a 1-0 victory over Japan in Perth, positioning itself strongly to secure a direct berth from the group. The Socceroos lead Saudi Arabia by three points and have a +8 goal difference advantage heading into the final round. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States from June 11 to July 19, with 48 teams competing across 48 venues. (With IANS Inputs)
