Surprise tactic pays off for UAE in Women's T20WC Qualifier
The move paid off later in the game, when Esha Oza's side bowled Qatar out for merely 29, thus securing a mammoth win and a heavy net run rate advantage.
The UAE batted first and racked up quick runs on the back of inspiring performances from Oza (113 from 55 balls with 19 boundaries including five sixes) and Theertha Satish (74 off 42 with 11 fours).
However, with rain looming, UAE management - led by experieced all-rounder and coach Ahmed Raza - decided at the 16-over mark that they had more than enough runs to play with.
If this were a first-class fixture, the side might as well have declared, but given that it was a T20I encounter, UAE had no such option.
The Asian side then came up with a rare tactical decision, calling all their batters to 'pad up' and deciding to retire them out.
This meant the UAE were eligible to immediately have a go at the Qatar with the ball, and bowled out the side within the 12th over mark to secure a remarkable win by 163 runs.
The victory was UAE's second on the trot at the Asia Qualifier event and puts them in the box seat to progress to the Super Three stage of the event.
The three winners from the group stage of the tournament progress to the Super Three phase, with the top two teams then progressing to the Global Qualifier at the start of next year.

Healy's fireworks overshadowed by final-over India A victory
Brisbane, Aug 15 (UNI) Alyssa Healy took a firm step on her path back from injury, clubbing India A to all parts of a ground named after her uncle Ian, before putting in her second long stint behind the stumps in three days. Yet the Australia captain's strong return from foot and knee issues took a back seat on Friday to her opponents' own comeback story, theirs from what appeared a doomed run chase to seizing a narrow victory that sealed a one-day series win over Australia A. The required run-rate was spiraling towards seven-an-over when India A's last recognised top-order bat, Radha Yadav, was dismissed for 60 to leave her side 7-193 with 11 overs remaining in their pursuit of Australia A's 9-265. It took a stirring 68-run stand between the visitors' numbers eight and nine, Tanuja Kanwer (50 off 57) and Prema Rawat (32no from 33), to pull off the two-wicket triumph. That was no mean feat given senior quicks Darcie Brown (who took 0-49 in her first match since March) and Kim Garth (1-33) opened the bowling, the pair among a cohort of national team players using the Queensland series for match practice. Needing five runs off the last over, Kanwer was out to Ella Hayward's first delivery, but Rawat held her nerve to seize victory with a ball to spare. Yastika Bhatia (66 off 71) and Radha Yadav (60 off 78) had laid the groundwork in the run-chase. It overshadowed somewhat Healy ramping up her return by pummelling a bruising 91 from just 87 balls in Brisbane, an early warning ahead of the ODI World Cup she will lead Australia at in October. "They've got a really spin-heavy attack and we're going to have to play a lot of that … throughout the World Cup as well, a lot of the middle overs will be spin-biased," said Healy. "For me it's really good practice, a good opportunity to be really decisive with your feet. I felt like it was okay at times today – not where I exactly want it to be – but can improve next game." Equally encouraging for Healy was her work in the field. Friday's match marked her second game back behind the stumps having not donned the gloves since January in an injury-marred home summer. "It actually feels really good. I feel in a really good place," Healy said of her return. "To have a little bit of time to focus on my keeping has been really worthwhile." The 35-year-old, who kept for 42 overs in Wednesday's three-wicket defeat to India A, has made technical adjustments in her keeping stance to, in her words, look after her "ageing joints". She looked spry even after spending more than 120 overs either batting or keeping over the first two ODIs, though she had no late-in-the-day tactical inspiration for captain Tahlia McGrath. "Today was a prime example of why I enjoy sitting out at times!" said Healy, whose regular deputy McGrath is captaining Australia A. "Not having to think about what to do at the back-end there is refreshing." Hayward, the Victorian spinner fresh off a breakthrough '24-25 summer, was entrusted with the last over but had more impact in the field, taking two catches and pulling off a sharp run-out at backward point. Garth made an unbeaten 41 from 45 to lead Australia A's late charge with the bat as India A made regular breakthroughs at the other end during Healy's hitting spree, which ended with more than 20 overs in the innings remaining. Asian Champions League: Defending champions Al-Ahli set for Firmino reunion
Defending champions Al-Ahli will face a reunion with Roberto Firmino in the league phase of the Asian Champions League Elite after the Saudi Pro League side were drawn to meet the former Liverpool forward's new side Al-Sadd of Qatar on Friday. Firmino was instrumental in the Jeddah-based outfit lifting the continental title for the first time in May when he inspired Al-Ahli to a 2-0 win over Japan's Kawasaki Frontale in the final before leaving the club in July. The Brazilian has since joined the Qatar Stars League champions and the two clubs have been drawn to face one another in Doha during the eight-match league phase of the competition, which will kick off on Sept. 15. The tournament will again adopt the Swiss league format for the opening round after its introduction last season, with the 24 participants divided into 12-team groups for both west and east Asia. Cricket West Indies celebrates historic ODI series victory over Pakistan
Saint John's [Antigua and Barbuda], August 15 (ANI): Cricket West Indies (CWI) has extended warm congratulations to the senior men's ODI team after their recent series win over Pakistan, the first bilateral ODI series victory over the Asian outfit in 33 years and the first home series triumph in 37 years. With the series tied 1-1 after the first two ODIs at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad, the Men in Maroon displayed laser focus and unmatched intensity in the third and final game on Monday, in which they claimed victory by an outstanding 202 runs. Captain and Player-of-the-Match Shai Hope's unbeaten 120, and Player-of-the-Series Jayden Seales' incredible figures of 6-18 from his 7.2 overs, highlighted the historic win.
