Healy's fireworks overshadowed by final-over India A victory
to all parts of a ground named after her uncle Ian, before putting in her second long stint behind the stumps in three days.
Yet the Australia captain's strong return from foot and knee issues took a back seat on Friday to her opponents' own comeback story, theirs from what appeared a doomed run chase to seizing a narrow victory that sealed a one-day series win over Australia A.
The required run-rate was spiraling towards seven-an-over when India A's last recognised top-order bat, Radha Yadav, was dismissed for 60 to leave her side 7-193 with 11 overs remaining in their pursuit of Australia A's 9-265.
It took a stirring 68-run stand between the visitors' numbers eight and nine, Tanuja Kanwer (50 off 57) and Prema Rawat (32no from 33), to pull off the two-wicket triumph.
That was no mean feat given senior quicks Darcie Brown (who took 0-49 in her first match since March) and Kim Garth (1-33) opened the bowling, the pair among a cohort of national team players using the Queensland series for match practice.
Needing five runs off the last over, Kanwer was out to Ella Hayward's first delivery, but Rawat held her nerve to seize victory with a ball to spare. Yastika Bhatia (66 off 71) and Radha Yadav (60 off 78) had laid the groundwork in the run-chase.
It overshadowed somewhat Healy ramping up her return by pummelling a bruising 91 from just 87 balls in Brisbane, an early warning ahead of the ODI World Cup she will lead Australia at in October.
"They've got a really spin-heavy attack and we're going to have to play a lot of that … throughout the World Cup as well, a lot of the middle overs will be spin-biased," said Healy.
"For me it's really good practice, a good opportunity to be really decisive with your feet. I felt like it was okay at times today – not where I exactly want it to be – but can improve next game."
Equally encouraging for Healy was her work in the field. Friday's match marked her second game back behind the stumps having not donned the gloves since January in an injury-marred home summer.
"It actually feels really good. I feel in a really good place," Healy said of her return. "To have a little
bit of time to focus on my keeping has been really worthwhile."
The 35-year-old, who kept for 42 overs in Wednesday's three-wicket defeat to India A, has made technical adjustments in her keeping stance to, in her words, look after her "ageing joints".
She looked spry even after spending more than 120 overs either batting or keeping over the first two ODIs, though she had no late-in-the-day tactical inspiration for captain Tahlia McGrath.
"Today was a prime example of why I enjoy sitting out at times!" said Healy, whose regular deputy McGrath is captaining Australia A. "Not having to think about what to do at the back-end there is refreshing."
Hayward, the Victorian spinner fresh off a breakthrough '24-25 summer, was entrusted with the last over but had more impact in the field, taking two catches and pulling off a sharp run-out at backward point.
Garth made an unbeaten 41 from 45 to lead Australia A's late charge with the bat as India A made regular breakthroughs at the other end during Healy's hitting spree, which ended with more than 20 overs in the innings remaining.
Ultimately the lack of contributions besides senior heads Healy and Garth cost the home side.
Ian Healy Oval will also host the final one-day game on Sunday.

Jasprit Bumrah informs selectors he is available to play in the Asia Cup
India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has made himself available to play the forthcoming Asia Cup in Dubai, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source said. The Indian Express understands that Bumrah had spoken to the selectors a few days ago and informed them about his readiness to play. The senior selection committee headed by former all-rounder Ajit Agarkar is expected to meet on August 19 in Mumbai to pick a 15-member squad for forthcoming Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played from September 9 to 28 in UAE in the T20 format. 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' the source said. Bumrah was released from the Test squad for the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Oval keeping in mind his workload. Bumrah had played in the first Test at Headingley, skipped the second Test at Edgbaston, which India won, and played in the third and fourth Tests at Lord's and Old Trafford. During the Test series, he had two-five wicket hauls and bowled 119.4 overs. With Asia Cup to be played in T20I format, Bumrah won't have to bowl longer spells and the team management can even pick and choose his games. Bumrah will get a gap of nearly 40 days between the last Test he played in England and the start of the Asia Cup. Bumrah's last T20I appearance was in the 2024 T20 World Cup final against South Africa in Bridgetown that India won by seven runs. He took 2 for 18. The Indian team will be travelling early to UAE for the Asia Cup. Most of the players will be going to the Asia Cup without any match practice game. The BCCI had asked team management whether they were in favour of a short camp in Bengaluru. However, the team management felt that it would be better to fly early so that players can get used to the conditions. 'Instead of having a camp here, the team will fly three-four days early so that they can get decent practice before the tournament starts,' the source said.

Allrounders provide the spin and skill in the tale
MUMBAI: For young players who want to take up cricket with the sole focus on becoming a good spinner, the England Test series was a cautionary tale. The spinner who is considered a match-winner and was in good form, Kuldeep Yadav, had to warm the bench for all five Tests. India's left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav didn't get to play a Test on the recent England tour despite being a match-winner as India opted to bolster the batting by including allrounders. (PTI) It sent a clear message to domestic coaches as well as the aspiring spinners that in modern cricket just being a good bowler is not enough. It's not just Test cricket. Even in other formats, you will be in and out of the team. At the 2024 T20 World Cup, Axar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja were the first choice. Kuldeep played as per the opposition and venue. In the 50 overs ICC Champions Trophy held in March, Jadeja and Axar were first choice, Kuldeep played when India fielded three spinners, and Varun Chakravarthy came in when India decided to go with four tweakers because of the spin-friendly surfaces in Dubai. In a couple of series, Varun Chakravarthy has been in the eleven, bamboozling batters with his unorthodox bowling. But he has played just four ODIs and only 18 T20Is so far. T20 is not a game for specialists, unless you are a power-hitter or a mystery spinner. Rest are all required to be multi-dimensional. For orthodox spinners, it's a challenge to stay relevant. Like Kuldeep in Tests, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is a glaring example in T20Is. He is the all-time leading wicket-taker in IPL (221 scalps, 174 games), but is not picked in the national team anymore. His last India game (he has played 80 T20Is, 72 ODIs) was in August 2023. It begs the question: what is the future for specialist spinners? The pressure they face to stay relevant is enormous. For a captain to say his spinner is indispensable, they need to make a mark as a strike bowler of Jasprit Bumrah's level. Even someone like R Ashwin was losing out to Ravindra Jadeja for a spot in the XI overseas. The trend is that mostly the spinners coming through are also good batters, along with Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. Going by their first series together in England, skipper Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir's thinking is to cover more bases even if it means compromising a bit on the penetration in bowling. 'A LINE OF THINKING' Former India spinner Maninder Singh says had India played Kuldeep, they would have won 3-1 in England. 'It is not that the specialist spinner's role is over. Probably in this case, it was a young team without Rohit and Virat, so there was a thought to have extra cushion in batting if the top-order didn't click. But the problem was that even when the top-order clicked, they didn't change (bring in Kuldeep). It was more a case of a line of thinking. 'Kuldeep was an automatic choice because, first of all bowlers of his breed are not there. Secondly, the English batters wouldn't have read him. We missed a point there. I think Gambhir will introspect and understand the point, which will be rectified in the upcoming matches,' says the former left-arm spinner. For former India player Chandrakant Pandit, a decorated domestic coach, it is about the spinner's ability. 'Nobody will compromise on the quality of bowling – all-rounders who bowl well are picked or a specialist bowler will only be picked. This is the thought process,' says the Madhya Pradesh coach. 'It is not that Kuldeep can't bat, it is important for him to realise that to fit in the XI there are spinners who are doing well and contributing in batting as well and to match them, 'I'll have to develop my batting'.' Basically, the team management is analysing the trade-off – how much difference will it make if an allrounder comes in for a specialist spinner? The India think-tank feels it isn't much. Washington Sundar's spin bowling in the England Tests was as good as a specialist's. He was outstanding at Lord's, running through England's line-up in the second innings with 4/22. He also provided breakthroughs in the other matches. It adds to the pressure on a specialist like Kuldeep. NO 'HOME ADVANTAGE' It is not just playing in tough, pace-friendly batting conditions, this trend to go with all-rounders is expected to continue at home too because in the World Test Championship race every team wants to get maximum points by preparing pitches to suit their bowling strength. Turning tracks has been the trend in India, some pitches have turned from Day 1, which will demand all-rounders to lend batting depth. Maninder and Pandit, however, see a clear change in the trend where the next generation of spinners know the importance of working on their batting skills. 'The trend has already changed. T20 cricket is there, in this every bowler wants to contribute with the bat as well. There is no doubt about that, which is good for the game.'

Gautam Gambhir, MS Dhoni captured in one frame, viral image sets internet ablaze: ‘Planned a perfect…'
After a long time, MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir were seen inside the same building. The former India captain and current head coach recently attended the wedding festivities of Utkarsh Sanghvi, the brother of Gujarat's Minister of State Harsh Sanghvi. According to reports, India's ODI captain Rohit Sharma also marked his attendance for the same. Suniel Shetty and Harbhajan Singh also graced the event with their presence as a starry night unfolded. Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni spotted in a single frame. (House of Events - Instagram) Dhoni and Gambhir were captured in the same frame, and it's not surprising that the image is going viral on the internet. The 2011 World Cup-winning captain attended the wedding festivities alongside his wife, Sakshi. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) looked dapper in a black suit, which he paired with a white shirt. On the other hand, Gambhir was dressed in a blue formal shirt. Despite being present at the wedding, Rohit Sharma was not seen in a single picture with Dhoni or Gambhir. Hence, the duo marking their attendance for the same wedding is quite a rare occasion. Relationship between Dhoni and Gambhir The relationship between Dhoni and Gambhir has been a huge talking point on social media for years. The duo shared a memorable partnership in the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka, which India eventually won. Gambhir played a knock of 97 while Dhoni remained unbeaten on 91. The then-India captain had sealed the contest with a six. Quite often in the media, Gambhir has been vocal about the entire team not getting the credit and how the chatter has always been about Dhoni's six of Nuwan Kulasekara. Gambhir has also publicly spoken about team selections and decision-making during Dhoni's captaincy tenure. This led to a narrative of rivalry in the media, though both have maintained that their focus was always on India's success. Gambhir eventually lost his place in the playing XI under Dhoni's captaincy. After his international retirement, Gambhir admitted to being frustrated with the lack of communication regarding his exclusion. On the other hand, Dhoni has never spoken publicly about his relationship with Gambhir. In IPL 2022, Gambhir was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and following the conclusion of the game against CSK, Gambhir was seen approaching Dhoni for a chat. Speaking of current times, Dhoni was last seen in action for CSK in IPL 2025, while Gambhir recently oversaw India drawing the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England.
