Aamir Khan reveals it was Amitabh Bachchan who supported the idea of Sitaare Zameen Par's theatre-only release
Aamir Khan is returning to the big screen after three years with his next, Sitaare Zameen Par. The film is looking for an exclusive release in theatres on June 20. Aamir has previously stated that he wants to keep the film in theatres and avoid immediate release on OTT platforms. Now, in an interaction with India Today, he shared how Amitabh Bachchan encouraged him to pursue this release model. (Also read: Sitaare Zameen Par title song: Aamir Khan, Genelia D'Souza spread joy in peppy number, fans call it 'OG sports anthem')
During the interaction, Aamir shared that even though he has no issue with any streaming platforms, he was unable to find logic in the timeline in which a film has a theatrical release and then premieres on OTT within the next few weeks. He added that it was Amitabh Bachchan who encouraged him to take the risk and stick to his beliefs with the theatre-only release.
Aamir added, 'I am a loyalist of cinema, and I believe in it. Yes, it's a big risk, and there's a lot [of money] involved. If I don't get that chunk of my pre-sales, and the film doesn't work, it could lead to a major loss. I did receive offers, but I turned them down because I want audiences to go to theatres and watch my film. I believe in cinema, and I believe in my audience."
Sitaare Zameen Par is the spiritual sequel to the 2007 hit film Taare Zameen Par. The film, which sees him play a basketball coach training a team of players with special needs, is a remake of the Spanish film Campeones. It is directed by RS Prasanna. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, the film introduces 10 actors: Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.

Aamir Khan recalls almost working with Mani Ratnam on ‘Lajo': 'Hope we collaborate soon'

The project, which stirred considerable buzz at the time, ultimately didn't materialise. In a recent interview with Galatta, Aamir clarified that contrary to past reports, the film was not shelved due to creative differences between him and Mani Ratnam. Aamir Khan says ‘no idea' if Sitaare Zameen Par will work at box office: I'm stressed only action films are working
Actor Aamir Khan is all set to entertain audiences with his upcoming sports comedy-drama Sitaare Zameen Par. However, in an interview with Galatta Plus, Aamir expressed that while he believes the film tells a heartwarming and beautiful story, he is unsure about its fate at the box office. (Also Read: Ranbir Kapoor poses with Sitaare Zameen Par cast as Aamir Khan hosts musical night at home, Sachin Tendulkar attends too) When asked about his instincts for Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir said, 'When I look at the film today, I think I am quite happy with it. I think what we set out to make, we have made. Will it work at the box office? I have no idea. The fact of the matter is, throughout my career, whenever my film is released, I suddenly become aware. My film is a comedy, but right now only the action is working. When Ghajini came, my film was action, but action wasn't working then. Nobody wants to see action." He added, "My film always releases at a time when it's completely ill-timed. When my comedy film comes out time action films are working. So I am constantly stressed that I don't know right now everyone wants to see action. The last 12 films have been action and blockbusters. So while I believe that it's a very heartwarming and beautiful story which will connect very deeply with people, that's what I am hoping. But right now everyone wants to see action films." He further added that the film will only be released in theatres and not on any other OTT platform. He dismissed reports of the film releasing on YouTube. Aamir Khan Productions presents ten debutants—Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar—in Sitaare Zameen Par.
