‘The terrible TV show that almost bankrupted my channel'
Ben Frow was speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival when he slated the revival series starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as agents Mulder and Scully.
Frow was asked to reveal his favourite TV shows of the last 50 years, naming the hugely influential sci-fi series which first aired from 1993 to 2002.
It was revived in 2016, with additional episodes airing in 2018, and the first episode at the time drew in the biggest audience in Channel 5's history for a drama.
Over 5million TV viewers tuned in live or caught up online the week after it was broadcast.
It was the biggest show launch since Celebrity Big Brother hit Channel 5 screens in 2011.
But Frow told the crowd at Edinburgh TV Festival The X-Files was a 'rubbish mega series'.
'We put a lot of money into that – it almost broke us.'
The conversation was unusually honest, with Frow admitting the first six months of 2025 had been 'grim' for Channel 5. He also called two of its most highly-anticipated series, reboots of Challenge Anneka and Faking It, 'disasters'.
'I was stunned Faking it was such a disaster,' he said. 'It was so brilliantly made.'
The noughties life-swapping show was rebooted this year. Every episode of Faking It saw a plucky volunteer dropped into a foreign world, with just four weeks to get to grips with a new skill and convince a panel of experts they're the genuine article.
Frow explained: 'I think in the New World Order you don't have to watch a show to get what the show is so we kind of encourage people not to watch the programme, but I was very surprised.
'I also wonder if Faking It as a title since fake news came – you know, it was 20 years ago.'

Challenge Anneka was another flop for Channel 5, but in hindsight Frow said he knew it was doomed before it even made it to air. More Trending
Originally airing on BBC from 1989 to 1995, the show followed Anneka Rice being given a task without any prior knowledge, with a tight deadline to complete it. usually in aid for a charitable cause.
But Challenge Anneka's second lease of life was quickly cut off and its final episode never even aired. It was ditched from Channel 5's weekend schedule after just two episodes.
'We realised about two weeks before we put it out, 'Hang on a minute. This is just a big makeover show.' We've had big home renovation shows since then and the world has changed so much that what Annika was doing was really ambitious 20, 30 years ago,' Frow said.

Channel 5 have confirmed the axing of an iconic 80s reboot after only three episodes, including one that never made it to the screen. Bosses have revealed Challenge Anneka won't be renewed for a new season due to poor ratings, with the revival, which aired last year, turning out to be flop for the broadcaster. The legendary game show was hosted by British TV presenter Anneka Rice, 66, and saw her tackle a range of challenges as she helped people and communities solve their problems. Speaking today, the team confirmed the series will not be recommissioned, but didn't confirm if the final episode will ever air. The Sun report that Channel 5's Ben Frow said: 'We realised two weeks before we put it out, it's a make up show, and they did home renovation shows since then. 'The world changed so much, what Annika was doing – which was innovative 30 years ago – was [different to] now, and we won't go there again.' Channel 5 has now ditched plans for a second series – nearly 30 years after the original BBC 1 show came to an end – following disastrous viewing figures. The show proved so unpopular that the final two episodes were shunted out of their primetime slot on Saturday evenings. The run of four episodes, which sources claim had 'cost a fortune' to produce, had been unveiled to much fanfare, and was initially viewed as a success as the first drew in 1.25 million viewers. However, that fell below 500,000 for the second, being significantly trounced by the ITV shows Saturday Night Takeaway and Starstruck. At the time the reboot aired a source revealed: 'It is so expensive to make and it needed a good return. Now Channel 5 does not want to run the risk of commissioning another series, given how quickly the ratings fell off the first. 'They just cannot see a way to make it worthwhile.' When Anneka was informed of Channel 5's rumoured decision, she was left red-faced. The news prompted her to post a picture of her sound technician on Twitter alongside a caption reading: 'Hey Dave, we've got 24 hours to find a new home.' She added: 'We always knew we were on a 'floating schedule' and might be bumped off at any moment. We will keep you posted. The projects are all up and running and I salute our army of volunteers who made this possible.' At the time, The Mail on Sunday reported that sources on the Challenge Anneka set claimed that the host was often 'terse and abrasive', which had upset younger behind-the-scenes staff.

The Rise Of Hip Hop In Northern Ireland (WT), produced by Lindsay Entertainment and Yolk Films, is a new documentary for BBC Northern Ireland that tells the untold story of a genre 'born from resistance and self-expression' and how it took root in an unlikely corner of the world. Lifestyle Lifestyle Farming can be one of the most dangerous professions in the UK. Farm 999 is a new BBC Daytime and BBC Northern Ireland co-commission, which looks at this often unseen aspect of rural life as farmers strive to feed the nation and protect the environment. The 15-part series is presented by Steph McGovern and made by Stellify Media with support from Northern Ireland Screen. House Of The Year is returning to BBC Northern Ireland and BBC iPlayer, with design expert and TV personality Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen back to host the new series with judges Jane Larmour, James Fairley and Patricia McGinnis. Destination X fans left 'gutted' over latest twist as they issue same complaint
BBC One's Destination X had TV viewers complaining on social media after the latest twist hugely impacted the contestants Viewers of Destination X were left 'gutted' by the latest twist in the popular BBC show, with many voicing the same grievance. The reality programme returned to our telly screens on Wednesday (20 August) with another episode, which saw remaining contestants Nick, Saskia, Judith, Daren, Josh and Claire tackle the latest challenge on the Destination X bus. Regrettably, Nick found himself bidding farewell to the BBC show after his location prediction was the furthest away from the group's actual location, which was revealed to be Pula, Croatia. Fans at home were left heartbroken by Nick's departure from the show, with many taking to social media to vent their disappointment. "I am so gutted, I really thought that Nick would get to the final and win! ! #DestinationX," one person posted on Twitter, now X, while a second said: "I'm in mourning for nick from #DestinationX." A third viewer said: "I haven't watched #DestinationX for long but I'm really sad to see Nick go, that was so unlucky, Could've won," and another added: "Nick was great. Sorry to see him go. #DestinationX." A fifth Destination X fan said: "#DestinationX going to be really boring now Nick's gone. Let's see how they get on without the strongest player on board." Speaking after he was told he was the latest contestant to be eliminated, Nick said: "Stepping off the bus here is frustrating, because I said it as I was placing it. "I couldn't quite find where I needed to be, which was a shame. It's been great, it's been a great experience. It's been really horrible and hard at times, lots of lessons learned. "The social dilemmas, the decision-making, what to tell to who and when, is very draining. The game is hard." Nick's fellow contestants were left stunned by his departure on the coach, with each expressing their astonishment whilst gearing up for the upcoming stage of the competition, reports the Manchester Evening News Judith pondered how Nick had butted heads with particular participants throughout his stint on the BBC One programme, confessing she believed he might have been misjudged and was merely concentrated on the contest. "I really don't think he's as bad a person as some people started to think. I think the game was just the first thing he thought about, the last thing he thought about when he went to bed. I think he was just so in it," Judith revealed to her fellow Destination X participants.
