Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport kicks off centennial celebration
The city began the airport's centennial celebration with a pep rally on Tuesday, honoring its past and looking to its future.

All of the living former Atlanta mayors gathered to celebrate the anniversary.
The theme, 'From racetrack to runways: A century in flight,' honors the airport's humble beginnings from an abandoned racetrack to its current status as the world's busiest airport.
'It's a century in the making, a story of grit, greatness, and global impact,' Jan Lennon, Executive Deputy General Manager of the airport said.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens paid tribute to the two former mayors the airport is named after, William Hartsfield who was instrumental in the airport's early development, and Maynard Jackson, who helped expand and modernize it.
'Our airport moves this entire region and indeed this entire state forward, creating opportunities and creating long legacies and connecting Atlanta to the entire world,' Dickens said.
Leaders also highlighted the airport's huge economic impact.
'With over 63,000 employees and a $66 billion dollar impact on the metro region every year,' Rep. Nikema Williams said.
The airport isn't finished growing either. There are upgrades and construction planned for the next decade.

Georgia daycare worker charged in child abuse case
A Georgia daycare worker was arrested and faces multiple charges, including child cruelty. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On Aug. 11, just before 6:45 p.m., Bainbridge police were called to Little Blessing Daycare on Independence Street regarding child neglect. While many details weren't released, police arrested daycare worker Yvette Thurston, 54, the same day. Thurston was booked into the Decatur County jail and charged with three counts of cruelty to children and one count of aggravated battery. On Thursday, the father of an injured 1-year-old shared photos on social media of his son, who he says was injured at the daycare. The pictures show the child with swelling and bruising around one of his eyes. 'This is every parents' worst nightmare and WE had to live it and are still living it,' the father said. The dad said it was the 1-year-old's first day, and his other son was at the daycare, too. 'Questioning the incident was an inconvenience for the person in custody for the horrible acts she did, and also the pastor, while watching the video footage,' the father said. The South Georgia Circuit District Attorney's Office emphasized its unwavering commitment to protecting children, supporting victims, and ensuring that the judicial process is conducted free from intimidation or violence. 'The rule of law is the foundation of our community,' Mulholland added. 'Our judges deserve to perform their duties without fear for their safety. You may not like their decisions, but you don't have the right to threaten them or their families. If you do, you will be prosecuted by my office to the full extent of the law.' Puppy dies after being left in hot car; Ohio woman facing charges
A Canton woman was arrested after allegedly leaving her puppy to die in a hot car while she went shopping. The temperature reached 90 degrees that day. Driver of tow truck with unauthorized police signage accused of impersonation
The Riverdale Police Department said its officers have arrested a tow truck operator for unlawfully displaying police insignia and markings suggesting an affiliation with the department. The Georgia State Patrol alerted the Riverdale Police Department Friday about a tow truck displaying unauthorized markings that read 'Riverdale Police Impound,' the police department said Tuesday. The truck also featured a license plate with a replica of the official City of Riverdale seal. Riverdale officers launched an investigation and quickly identified the vehicle and its operator. The investigation confirmed that the tow truck operator had no affiliation with the Riverdale Police Department and had never been employed by the RPD in any capacity. The Riverdale Police Department emphasized that such deception is illegal and erodes public trust.
