PNB named top Malaysian sovereign investor, 17th globally in Global SWF rankings
The GSR Scoreboard has become the measuring stick of best practices among state-owned investors around the world. It evaluates more than 200 sovereign wealth funds (SWF) and public pension funds worldwide on governance practices, sustainability commitments and institutional resilience.
In a statement today, PNB said it received an overall score of 84 per cent, including a perfect 10 out of 10 for sustainability, in recognition of its climate targets, environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration, and transparency in reporting.
'The ranking reflects the significant progress PNB has made in strengthening governance, embedding sustainability across its investment processes, and enhancing its long-term institutional resilience,' it said.
PNB deputy president and group chief executive Datuk Rick Ramli said the ranking reflects the fund's ongoing efforts to incorporate responsible and sustainable practices in its operations and investment activities.
'It is also a strong encouragement for us to continue pushing for long-term value creation for our unit holders and the wider Malaysian economy, in line with PNB's purpose of uplifting the financial lives of Malaysians across generations,' he said.
PNB said that notable progress includes a 98 per cent reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from its 2022 baseline, in line with its target to achieve net zero operations by 2025.
On portfolio-level targets, PNB has pledged to achieve a net-zero investment portfolio by 2050 and has so far channelled RM5.5 billion into green and transition assets, representing 55 per cent of its RM10 billion target by 2030.
PNB has also implemented a living wage policy for its employees since 2023 and is now encouraging its investee companies to adopt similar practices under the government's GEAR-uP initiative. — Bernama

Traders fined at Penang fair for not being local residents

GEORGE TOWN : Local government enforcement officers have drawn flak after a video showing them fining stallholders at a trade fair in Bukit Mertajam went viral. In a now-deleted TikTok video shared by the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP), enforcement officers were seen issuing compound notices to traders selling sarees and other Indian-themed goods. The officers were also heard describing the event, held earlier this month, as illegal. The traders at the concourse of the supermarket were told that they were in violation of two rules: they were not Penang residents, and they were selling 'Indian-themed items' outside the allowed period. 'I have an SSM licence, and I am a Malaysian, and you're saying I can't do business?' one shocked trader was heard asking, referring to the Companies Commission of Malaysia. The video then showed the MBSP officers speaking to the Kuala Lumpur-based event organiser, who appeared equally confused. The officers explained that under a state policy, only Penang residents could sell 'Indian-related' items and hold fairs. Non-Penangites could only trade their wares from April 1 to June 30, or during the 30 days before Deepavali. 'All Malaysians are welcome to trade their wares from April to June. No problem,' one officer was heard saying. The organiser refused to comment fearing repercussions. The fair was held from July 9 to 13 and deemed a 'big success', with a South Indian soap star gracing its opening. Such Indian-related fairs are common across the peninsula, where cheap wares and textiles are sold at prices lower than brick and mortar stores. Former MBSP councillor P David Marshel asked if such a policy was legal, saying it may go against Article 8 of the Federal Constitution, which guarantees equal treatment for all citizens. He urged the Penang government to clarify whether the policy had been formally approved, and to cancel the compound notices issued. Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan said such a policy may risk creating a perception that Penang is not open to fair business practices. 'Restricting events to certain months may not be the best way forward. This could dampen growth and limit healthy competition between local and outside traders,' he said in a statement. He said while the rule may have been aimed at protecting local businesses from unfair competition, a more equitable solution would be to manage, not block, participation. 'I urge the state to review this policy and seek a more balanced, fair and business-friendly approach that benefits all,' he said. MSMEs Gain Better Understanding On ESG Practices, E-invoice Through SME Corp Programme
KUALA TERENGGANU, July 18 (Bernama) -- Operators of Micro, Small and Medium Entreprises (MSME) stand to gain a better understanding of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices and e-Invoices through programmes organised by SME Corp Malaysia, an agency under the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry (KUSKOP). SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Rizal Nainy said that programmes such as the two-day 2025 MSME Sustainabilty Series programme, which concluded yesterday, provide exposure and practical guidance to MSMEs on how to implement ESG practices in their business operations. 'Also the use of e-Invoices is in line with ESG practices, which supports the governance element by improving transparency and compliance in a firm's financial reporting. 'This will support Malaysia towards more efficient financial adminstration and the introduction of the e-Invoice is a good step and MSMEs need to take this small step but with confidence to ensure their businesses are susintable in the future,' he said during his welcoming address at the 2025 MSME Sustainable Series programme, held at the Islamic Civilisation Park Convention Centre, Terengganu from July 16 to 17. The two-day programme held for MSME participants in Terengganu and other East Coast regions, contained several main activities, including the 2025 ESG Workshop: From Theory to Practice, the e-Invoice Seminar and the MSME Open Day. He also pointed out that incorporating ESG principles by MSMEs would not only ensure the continuity of existing supply chains, but also creates opportunities to new markets and boosts access to green finance. The second day of the programme was dedicated to the e-Invoice for MSMEs seminar, which provided participants with a deeper understanding on the implementation of e-Invoices, he said. 'Through this session, participants were exposed to the concept and basics of e-Invoicing, in line with the guidelines set by the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN),' he stressed, adding that the interactive seminar provided step-by-step practical guidance on implementing e-Invoices, especially in using the MyInvois portal. -- BERNAMA
