Congress and allies gained in most of the Maharashtra seats where votes went up: BJP

The Hindu7 hours ago
The BJP on Friday (August 8, 2025) said the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, damaged his own credibility while alleging large-scale electoral manipulation in Maharashtra in 2024.
At a press conference, Union Minister and BJP leader Bhupender Yadav said, 'Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was talking about dropping an 'atom bomb'. Yesterday, a friend told me that he was actually cutting the tree on which he was sitting with an axe.' Responding to Mr. Gandhi's allegations, Mr. Yadav said that in the Maharashtra 2024 Assembly election, the Congress and allies had, in fact, won most of the seats where the votes had increased.
'Threatening language'
He said the 'arrogance' in Mr. Gandhi's language, threatening the Election Commission of India (ECI) with consequences if the Congress comes to power, did not befit the Opposition leader. He accused the Congress leader and his party of attacking the Army and the constitutional institutions.
'The Congress leaders do not even miss an opportunity to speak against the comments made by the Supreme Court. In this country, the Army, the ECI, Parliament, and all the other constitutional institutions work autonomously and independently... it is the duty of a person who abides by the Constitution not to use arrogant and threatening language against these institutions,' he said.
Referring to the Congress leader's press conference on Thursday (August 7, 2025), the BJP leader said Mr. Gandhi's main point was the increase of one crore votes in the Maharashtra Assembly election. 'The details are on the ECI website. In 2024, about 40 lakh votes increased between the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, but Rahul Gandhi claimed that there was an increase of one crore votes, so there is an error margin of 60%,' he said.
'In Maharashtra, they [the Congress and allies] won most of the seats where the votes had increased. In Mumbra-Kalwa Assembly constituency number 149, where voters went up by 41,663, NCP-Shiv Sena's Jitendra Ahwad won the seat by 96,228 votes,' he said, citing several other instances wherein the Opposition candidates won by large margins.
Stating that the addition or deletion of votes is an independent exercise of the ECI, Mr. Yadav said Mr. Gandhi should file an affidavit on oath before the ECI with respect to his accusations. 'However, he has not done so. His modus operandi has been to 'shoot and scoot, ' said Mr. Yadav, alleging that the Opposition disrupted parliamentary proceedings to evade discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

Let Election Commission itself submit an affidavit, says Ashok Gehlot

Questioning the neutrality of the Election Commission, veteran Congress leader Ashok Gehlot on Friday (August 8, 2025) asked the poll body to itself submit an affidavit stating that there were no irregularities in the elections. The Election Commission had demanded an affidavit under oath from Congress MP Rahul Gandhi about his allegation of electoral fraud. Mr. Gehlot said at a press conference in Jaipur that the Election Commission had made an 'absurd demand' despite knowing the fact that Mr. Gandhi was working under an oath to uphold the Constitution which inherently included strengthening the constitutional institutions. 'Instead of making such a ridiculous demand, the EC should have initiated a fair investigation,' he said. The former Rajasthan Chief Minister accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of damaging all democratic institutions, while affirming that the Election Commission, once respected globally for its credibility, was being looked at with suspicion. 'Democracy cannot survive in the country when the EC colludes with the ruling party,' Mr. Gehlot said. Mr. Gehlot said the statements of the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha about electoral fraud in Maharashtra and Karnataka were 'absolutely correct' and in the interest of the nation. Mr. Gandhi's presentation had proved that a dangerous game was being played in the country, he said, adding that threats were being issued to the Congress leader instead of addressing the issue. While the Election Commission was depicting a 'clear bias' against the Opposition leaders after changes in its appointment procedure, the BJP's manipulation of election results through 'rigging and money power' and its acts to undermine institutions for political advantage had posed a major threat to the nation's democracy, Mr. Gehlot said.

BJP starts mega youth enrolment drive in UP

Lucknow: The BP has set a target of enrolling more than 16 lakh youth as party cadres in UP as it initiates the poll spadework in the run-up to the panchayat polls due next year and subsequently the high stakes 2027 UP Assembly elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now BJP sources said that the party assigned the task to the UP wing of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth arm of the party, which would reach out to young voters aged between 18 and 30. The morcha workers were asked to convince the youth about the policies and agenda of the party and convert them into potential cadres. The plan is proposed to be executed under the formula of 'one-booth-ten-youth'—meaning 10 young workers per booth. With UP comprising around 1.65 lakh polling booths, the strength of new workers could potentially rise by at least 16 lakhs. "A formal blueprint of the plan is scheduled to be laid out in the next few days," asserted a senior functionary in UP BJYM. During a recent organisational meeting attended by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the party leadership pressed on the need of enrolling at least 100 youth in every booth and around 15,000 youth in each assembly seat. This, experts said, was part of a booth-level micromanagement—a strategy the BJP mastered since its galactic rise under Prime Minister Narendra Modi since 2014. The focus on the 18–30 age group means tapping into first-time voters and those who may not yet have a strong political allegiance. A senior BJYM leader said that the frontal wing was asked to tap college students and young professionals showing a pro-BJP leaning. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The objective of the campaign will essentially be twofold: updating voter lists, primarily by getting the names of first-time voters added and convincing the electorate for the ambitious One Nation One Election, synchronising all elections in the country either on a single day or within a specific time frame. Experts said that the development signals the BJP's attempt at entering an early mobilisation phase in Uttar Pradesh, treating even the 2025 panchayat polls as a stepping stone while working toward the much bigger 2027 assembly elections. By turning voters into party workers, BJP aims to ensure deeper ground-level penetration and a self-sustaining grassroots machinery.

Delisting of converted tribals may jeopardise TSP areas, say leaders

1 2 Jaipur: Tribal social groups have sounded an alarm over the Union govt's reported move to delist tribal people who have converted to other religions, particularly Christianity. The concern comes ahead of a major meeting convened in Banswara on World Tribal Day (Saturday), where tribal organisations and allied political parties are expected to formally oppose the proposal, calling it a threat to both the identity and entitlements of tribal communities. During the ongoing monsoon session of Parliament, the Centre signalled its intention to review the tribal status of those who converted, particularly in recent decades. The move, if implemented, could have sweeping effects in Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) areas — blocks that qualify for targeted welfare spending if they retain a tribal population of at least 50%. Vela Ram Ghogra, State President of the Bhartiya Tribal Party (BTP), called the proposed move a "recolonisation agenda" pushed by the RSS and BJP. "The tribal populace may have converted into Christianity and, in very minimal numbers, to Islam or Buddhism. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unsold 2021 Cars Now Almost Free - Prices May Surprise You Unsold Cars | Search Ads Learn More Undo But this change is only superficial — they have not left their culture, customs, or tribal way of life," Ghogra said. "Delisting them would mean institutional segregation from their own community. We will lose them forever. RSS and BJP are playing with fire by trying to import their communal politics into the tribal regions, which have so far remained untouched by mainstream polarisation." Ghogra said non-tribal populations in TSP-designated areas across 12 states — including Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh — already grew substantially since the 1971 Census, shrinking tribal representation and resources. Udaipur MP Manna Lal Rawat, affiliated with the BJP, emerged as a key proponent of the delisting campaign. He recently raised the issue in Parliament, arguing that converted tribals continue to enjoy reservations in govt jobs and educational institutions, despite changing their faith. "A significant portion of budget meant for ST is being spent on those who converted," Rawat said in Parliament. "This is a gross violation of the Constitution and undermines the purpose of affirmative action. " Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
