Chhattisgarh: Cong raps school cuts, threatens massive protest over rationalisation policy

Hans India4 hours ago

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Congress legislator and AICC (All India Congress Committee) secretary Devendra Yadav has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government over its on-going teacher rationalisation policy, calling it an anti-education and anti-employment move.
A major state-level protest is planned for Teachers' Day on September 5. Addressing a press briefing at Indira Bhawan, Yadav alleged that the policy would result in the abolition of over 45,000 teaching posts and the closure of 10,463 schools across the state, disproportionately affecting tribal regions like Bastar, Surguja, and Jashpur.
CM Yadav claimed that the rationalisation process is designed to avoid new teacher recruitment despite the government's earlier promise to fill 58,000 vacancies.
He said the new student-teacher ratio norms -- raising the primary school ratio from 21:1 to 30:1 and middle school from 26:1 to 35:1 -- would eliminate one-third of existing posts.
He also warned that the burden on remaining teachers would become unmanageable, with two teachers expected to handle 18 subjects and additional non-teaching duties.
The Congress leader accused the government of by-passing consultations with teachers' unions, parent associations, and educationists before implementing the policy.
He warned that the closures would not only impact education quality but also jeopardise the livelihoods of thousands of mid-day meal workers, cooks, and support staff linked to the affected schools.
Yadav announced that the Congress would launch statewide protests in every district and block, with details of the agitation to be announced soon.
In response, the Chhattisgarh government defended the rationalisation policy, stating that it aims to correct imbalances in teacher deployment.
According to official data, over 5,500 schools in the state are single-teacher institutions, while others have surplus staff.
The government claims the policy has already reduced single-teacher schools by 80 per cent and improved staffing in underserved areas.
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has reiterated that the goal is to ensure equitable access to quality education across the state, especially in remote tribal regions.
Despite the government's assurances, protests by teachers' unions have intensified, with black armband demonstrations and outreach to parents underway.

Suvendu Adhikari slams Bengal govt for skipping Yoga Day, says

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], June 21 (ANI): On the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal's Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised the state government for not participating in the nationwide celebration. He alleged that while both NDA and non-NDA ruled states observed the day, West Bengal deliberately skipped it. Speaking to ANI, Adhikari said, 'NDA and non-NDA state governments are celebrating Yoga Day today, except West Bengal, because West Bengal follows Bangladesh. It does not follow Delhi. More than 180 countries are celebrating International Yoga Day today. As Indians, we are proud of this.' The sharp remarks came as International Yoga Day was celebrated across the country, promoting the physical and mental health benefits of yoga. Earlier on Saturday, senior BJP leader Dilip Ghosh said, 'Yoga is our country's heritage. We have given yoga to the world. It is a very good medium to keep the body healthy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi promoted it globally, and now yoga is being practised in about 200 countries, so the credit for this goes to Narendra Modi, who revived and promoted yoga in the world again.' Meanwhile, on the occasion of International Yoga Day, West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose highlighted how the practice of Yoga was earlier 'confined to India,' and the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spread it internationally has led to people accepting it the world over. As part of the 11th International Yoga Day celebrations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the effort to promote a healthy lifestyle while performing Yoga with others in Vishakapatnam. Meanwhile, multiple other Chief Ministers and Union Ministers are participating in Yoga events in their respective cities. 'Yoga is universal in nature. Yoga connects the mind and the body. This is something which belongs to the entire humanity. It was confined to India, but our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, took it to the whole world. Now it is for the world, and the world is accepting it,' Governor Bose told ANI. (ANI)

Congress MP Randhawa slams J-K CM Omar Abdullah over remarks on Indus waters

Chandigarh (Punjab) [India], June 21 (ANI): Congress MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa strongly rebuked Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his opposition to a proposed 113-km canal to divert surplus water from the Indus river system to Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, emphasising Punjab's historical and agricultural significance. He recalled the challenges Punjab faced during Operation Sindoor, asserting that there wasn't as much 'Pakistani attack in J&K as there was in Punjab.' Speaking in to ANI, Randhawa said, 'One should not make statements that cast doubt on patriotism. Punjabis have never done that. And even during Operation Sindoor, there wasn't as much Pakistani attack in J&K as there was in Punjab. Punjab was turned into a battlefield. The patriotism of Punjab, the strength of Punjab, and the strength of its agriculture -- as long as Punjab remains strong, India remains strong.' Randhawa said he was 'sad' and 'hurt' by the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister's recent comments. 'I don't know in what context Mr. Abdullah made his statement, but I'm sad. Considering the relationships his grandfather, father, and himself have had with Punjabis and with Punjab, and the faith his father and grandfather had in Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple), I am hurt by his statement.' He directly replied to CM Abdullah's remarks: 'Punjab should be given water because when India gained Independence, we used to beg to the world for (food) grain.' The Congress MP underscored the historic significance of Punjab's irrigation system, recalling the legacy of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. 'It is because of this water, and the three dams built there, and if they have even a little knowledge of history, they would know that the best canal system existed during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's time. From Khyber Pass, where the Mughals used to enter and loot India, Maharaja Ranjit Singh blocked that route and stopped the Mughals from entering, turning the country into a capable and independent state. He ruled over Jammu & Kashmir for over 40 years.' He stated that Punjab's border regions, including areas right up to the no-man's-land where farming continues today, are not only symbols of the state's resilience but crucial contributors to national food supplies. 'That water is Punjab's lifeline,' he said. Randhawa's remarks come in response to CM Abdullah's June 20 statement in Jammu, where he rejected the canal, citing Jammu's drought-like conditions and questioning Punjab's past support asking 'Did they give us water when we needed it?'
