AUS Board approves decisions focused on leadership growth
After the meeting, Sheikha Bodour said: 'Excellence in education is achieved through conscious investment in people, planning, and principled governance. The Board's decisions reflect a commitment to building an institution that is academically distinguished yet operationally resilient. We are strengthening our leadership, supporting faculty development, and refining our governance frameworks to ensure AUS remains responsive to today's demands as a leading force in shaping higher education in our region and beyond.'
'The decisions taken during this board meeting reflect the strength of our vision and the clarity with which AUS is charting its path forward,' said Dr Tod A. Laursen, Chancellor of AUS. 'With strengthened leadership, defined academic priorities and disciplined financial planning, we are positioning the university to lead with purpose in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape.'
Among the key outcomes, the board approved the appointment of Dr. Matthias Ruth as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost. Dr. Ruth is an academic leader with a distinguished track record in interdisciplinary research and institutional strategy, having held senior roles at the University of York, the University of Alberta and Northeastern University.
The board also advanced several initiatives to support faculty excellence, including the approval of a new round of rolling contracts and a new round of academic promotions.
These measures reflect AUS' continued focus on attracting and retaining outstanding faculty while fostering a culture of academic distinction.
An updated Human Resources Policy Manual was also adopted to align institutional practices with international standards in higher education administration.
In the area of financial governance, the board approved the university's fiscal year 2025–2026 general operating budget, along with dedicated budgets for research, graduate studies and capital projects.
It also endorsed the standalone financial statements of AUS Enterprises — a holding company established to support the university's financial sustainability — for the 15-month period ending Aug.31, 2024.
To further strengthen its governance structure, the board welcomed three new members: Dr. Ebtesam Almazrouei, Dr. Tony F. Chan and Mohamed Khadiri. Dr. Almazrouei serves as Executive Director and Acting Chief AI Researcher at the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi and chairs the United Nations' AI for Good Impact Initiative.
Dr. Chan recently concluded his presidency at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia and previously served as President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Khadiri is the Chief Executive Officer of Bank of Sharjah, with deep expertise in global corporate and investment banking.
With these decisions, AUS reaffirms its position as a regional and global leader in higher education — committed to academic distinction, community impact and preparing graduates to shape the future.

The event brought together philanthropists, alumni, partners and friends of the university to recognise those whose support continues to drive AUS forward.
Among the distinguished guests was Sir Magdi Yacoub, world-renowned heart surgeon and philanthropist, who joined the celebration as a guest of honour, underscoring the shared values of compassion, education and service that define the AUS donor community. The Shurooq story is all about investing in people, planet, and place
Over the past 15 years, the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has invested AED 7.2 billion across 52 transformative projects, reshaping Sharjah's economic and cultural landscape. Under the leadership of Her Excellency Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of Shurooq, the Authority has emerged as a model of how investment, sustainability, and cultural heritage can be harmonised within a forward-looking development framework. This strategic vision has not only advanced economic growth but also preserved the emirate's identity, ensuring that development remains anchored in community impact and environmental stewardship. Ahmed Obaid Al Qaseer, CEO of Shurooq, emphasises that their investment approach is far from random. Each of its key sectors, real estate, hospitality, arts and culture, and leisure, was selected for its capacity to deliver lasting value to both residents and visitors. 'This holistic approach—guided by the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi—continues to inform our decision-making, enabling Shurooq to shape a vibrant and resilient Sharjah for generations to come,' says Al Qaseer. Rather than operate as a conventional accelerator, Shurooq empowers start-ups and SMEs by building strategic destinations that enhance visibility and accessibility. 'Today, over 600 businesses operate across our projects—including 87 SMEs and nearly 300 women-led enterprises—across sectors like hospitality, retail, arts and culture, and leisure,' says Al Qaseer. Through partnerships with entities like Sheraa and the Sharjah Advanced Industry Accelerator, Shurooq has helped streamline investor support, lower entry barriers, and create a fertile ecosystem for entrepreneurship. Al Qaseer describes this model as 'enablement through infrastructure,' positioning Shurooq as a vital catalyst rather than a competitor in the innovation space. Several landmark projects further illustrate Shurooq's commitment to integrated, values-led growth. Sharjah Sustainable City stands as a testament to the emirate's ambition to lead in climate-conscious urban design, showcasing renewable energy use, water recycling, and reduced carbon emissions. The Sharjah Collection Retreats, featuring Kingfisher, Moon, and Al Rayaheen, combine luxury with eco-tourism, offering immersive cultural experiences rooted in sustainability. The House of Wisdom redefines the modern library, merging cultural heritage with digital innovation in a shared space for learning, art, and collaboration. Meanwhile, community-focused developments like Khorfakkan Beach and Heart of Sharjah show how public infrastructure and restored heritage sites can together drive social cohesion and urban vitality. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are another cornerstone of Shurooq's success. 'At Shurooq, we've learned that clearly defined roles, outcome-based frameworks, and shared risk models lead to resilient developments with measurable impact,' elaborates Al Qaseer. Shurooq's partnerships with Eagle Hills Sharjah, Diamond Developers, and General Hotel Management Ltd (GHM) have delivered transformative projects like Maryam Island, Sharjah Sustainable City, and The Chedi Al Bait, Sharjah. 'Looking ahead, PPPs will remain central to Sharjah's development strategy, especially in priority areas such as sustainable infrastructure, health tourism, and clean mobility'. These partnerships go beyond capital and investments; they reflect progress on key UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in renewable energy, sustainable cities, and climate action. 'One of the most notable examples is our partnership with Diamond Developers on Sharjah Sustainable City, which directly advances UN SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13: Climate Action, and SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, by integrating renewable energy, water recycling, and eco-conscious living standards,' asserts Al Qaseer. 'Likewise, our hospitality collaborations support SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production through sustainable tourism models and inclusive job creation.' Additional collaborations with organisations like Mubadara and the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) reinforce Shurooq's commitment to conservation and community well-being. Beyond physical infrastructure, Shurooq has also helped position Sharjah as a credible global investment destination. With AED 97 billion in capital secured across 600 projects, the emirate offers competitive operational costs, regulatory clarity, and robust infrastructure. The Sharjah FDI Office (Invest in Sharjah) plays a pivotal role in maintaining this momentum by fostering investor confidence through federal coordination and international outreach. For Shurooq, sustainability is not just a guiding principle; it is a measurable performance metric. Every project integrates environmental KPIs, third-party audits, and biodiversity protocols to ensure long-term resilience. This meticulous approach is central to how Shurooq future-proofs its developments and sustains impact beyond short-term gains. Looking ahead, Al Qaseer envisions the next phase of development focused on sustainable tourism, wellness infrastructure, and innovation districts led by SMEs. With 60 million square feet already developed and guided by the vision of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi and H.E. Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Shurooq continues to evolve, shaping Sharjah's future as a beacon of inclusive, values-driven urban growth. Al Qaseer summarises it in a single line: 'We are not just building destinations—we are helping to define the future urban and economic identity of Sharjah'.

Meanwhile, Pag-IBIG Fund's net income grew by 15.25 percent or ₱3.71 billion to reach ₱28.04 billion. This is the highest net income recorded since the agency was founded in 1980. Officials attributed the growth to strong collections and higher earnings from Pag-IBIG Fund's housing and short-term loan portfolios. 'This performance shows how excellently we are managing the funds that our members have entrusted to us. With our strong fiscal standing, we remain capable of continuing to deliver our members' benefits and are in a solid position to finance more homes under the Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino, or Expanded 4PH Program, in line with the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to empower more Filipinos achieve better, more dignified lives,' said Secretary Jose Ramon P. Aliling of the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, who also chairs the 11-member Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees. Higher investment returns also contributed to the income growth. The agency's income from investments surged by 51.79 percent year-on-year to ₱4.27 billion. This was driven by strategic placements in bonds and other debt securities, money market instruments, equities, and investment properties. Investment income accounted for 5.56 percent of the agency's total gross income in the first half of the year. Pag-IBIG Fund Chief Executive Officer Marilene C. Acosta, meanwhile, emphasized the strength of the agency's financial position. As of June 2025, Pag-IBIG Fund's total assets stood at ₱1.14 trillion, reflecting a 7.02 percent or ₱74.90 billion increase from the year-end 2024 figure of ₱1.07 trillion. Acosta further stated that the agency's strong performance directly benefits its members. Under its charter, the agency returns at least 70 percent of its annual net income to members in the form of dividends, which are credited to their savings every year. 'Pag-IBIG Fund is owned by its members — the Filipino workers. It is our duty to grow and protect their savings,' Acosta said. 'Guided by President Marcos Jr.'s call for government institutions to deliver responsive social benefits, we continue to ensure that our members enjoy competitive earnings on their savings and gain access to affordable home financing. We are committed to sustaining our strong performance to help uplift the lives of more Filipino workers,' she added.
