Federico Chiesa gives coy response regarding Liverpool future after making just one start in the Reds Premier League title-winning season

Daily Mail2 days ago

Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa admits a return to Italy is 'something to think about' this summer.
The 27-year-old finished a frustrating maiden campaign in England, in which he featured just 14 times after arriving late in August in a £10million deal, as a Premier League winner and is currently targeting a return to pre-season training on July 8.
But asked about a return to his homeland, the Italy international told La Gazzetta dello Sport: 'That's something to think about during the summer.
'My family, my agent and I have a great relationship with Liverpool, and the goal is to be ready for the pre-season.
'We'll find the best solution for everyone. I work every day with a Liverpool programme to be in top shape for the tests on July 8.
'While out of the squad (at Juventus), I was able to train in great condition, but I missed playing friendlies. I had to start from scratch at Liverpool and that held me back.
'I hope (next season) it's my season. My dream is to participate in the World Cup.'
When Chiesa arrived on Merseyside, he was unfit after being frozen out by Thiago Motta at the Turin club and not having a pre-season, and lacked match sharpness.
The winger was then constantly playing catch-up in the early months of the season and as a result, could not get in the team ahead of others.
He only managed a meagre 104 minutes of football in the Premier League, making just one start, which came against Brighton in the penultimate match of the campaign with the title wrapped up.
However, despite not utilising Chiesa's skills throughout the season, Liverpool boss Arne Slot that he has a future at Anfield just last month.
'Does he have a future here? Yes, definitely he has, yes,' said Slot. 'Definitely. I think everyone playing for us over here has a future over here.
'Next season, if he comes back completely fit, which he has hardly been for the first half-season but then afterward he became fitter and fitter. The next step should have been playing time, which I couldn't give him.
'But I can give him playing time in pre-season, so he can build himself up and then go even further.'
Chiesa is natural a winger who plays on the right, but with Mo Salah a staple in that position, opportunities were hard to come by as the Egyptian led Liverpool to a 20th title.
Slot also said: 'In terms of the quality he has, he deserves more playing time but unfortunately for him he's in competition with Mo Salah. On the left, it's competition with Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz. Three players who have had a great season.
'He was not as fit as the others for a long time. That doesn't help in the beginning. Then the others did so well there's no reason to change.
'Is he good enough to play for us? Yes he is. But I've always felt Lucho, Cody and Mo deserved the confidence I had in them.'
Chiesa has been linked with the likes of Napoli and Atletico Madrid, but there is yet to be any serious speculation of a departure.
He has admitted that he would 'never say never' to a return to Turin, but there are no signs that is an option at the time of writing.

Dr Martens sees profits slide but on track for return to growth

Dr Martens has revealed annual profits slumped as sales came under pressure and it cautioned over ongoing falling revenues in the UK. The footwear group reported pre-tax profits of £8.8 million for the year to March 30, down from £93 million the previous year, after seeing sales fall 10%. On an underlying basis, pre-tax profits slumped to £34.1 million from £97.2 million. The group said sales to consumers in the US returned to growth in the second half of the year and have continued to increase, but revealed UK revenues have remained lower since the year-end 'due to a challenging market'. It added that unfavourable foreign exchange rates would see it take a hit to group sales and profits of around £18 million and £3 million respectively in 2025-26. Despite this, Dr Martens said it expects underlying profits to rise 'significantly' over the financial year ahead, with analysts expecting a jump to between £54 million and £74 million. It flagged uncertainty over the impact of higher tariffs, but said it was holding off from price hikes for the the remainder of 2025. Its stock is already in the US market for the spring/summer season and either there or on its way for the autumn/winter. 'We do however recognise that there is continued macroeconomic uncertainty and the full outcome of tariffs is still unknown, and we will monitor this closely through the year and take action as appropriate,' the group said. The Northamptonshire-based company outlined new plans for growth alongside its results, with aims to attract new shoppers and hold off from discounts in EMEA and the Americas. Annual figures showed sales sales dropped 11.4% over the year, although retail lifted 1% in the final six months. In the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region, sales fell 11%, with direct-to-consumer difficulty amid a highly promotional market – particularly in the UK. The company, whose yellow-stitched boots have been a retro mainstay for decades, has been in the doldrums in recent years, with declining revenues exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis. It listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2021, and has since issued a slew of profit warnings and replaced its chief executive. Many of Dr Martens' recent problems have come from steep declines in sales in the US, but new chief executive Ije Nwokorie said the group had stabilised in the past year. He said: 'Our single focus in 2024-25 was to bring stability back to Dr Martens. 'We have achieved this by returning our direct-to-consumer channel in the Americas back to growth, resetting our marketing approach to focus relentlessly on our products, delivering cost savings and significantly strengthening our balance sheet.' Mr Nwokorie, previously the firm's head of marketing before taking on the top job from Kenny Wilson on January 6, said: 'I am laser-focused on day-to-day execution, managing costs and maintaining our operational discipline while we navigate the current macroeconomic uncertainties.'

Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes gets brutal response after snubbing Saudi transfer

Ivan Toney has questioned whether Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has even 'seen the Saudi Pro League' after snubbing a huge offer to join Al-Hilal this summer Bruno Fernandes has been told that he has got the Saudi Pro League all wrong after declaring that he rejected a move to the Middle East because he wants to keep playing at an elite level. That's the verdict of Ivan Toney, who was asked about Fernandes' decision to stay at Manchester United. Toney, 29, moved to Saudi Arabia last summer to join Al-Ahli from Brentford in a transfer deal worth £40million despite interest from other clubs in the Premier League. ‌ After plundering 30 goals in 44 games for Al-Ahli, Toney was handed a surprise recall to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel ahead of the upcoming games against Andorra and Senegal. ‌ And the former Bees striker has questioned whether Fernandes has even 'seen the league' after being asked about the Portugal star's comments on the move. 'That's his decision. He maybe thinks it's different to me,' Toney said during an interview with talkSPORT while discussing Fernandes' decision to stay at Old Trafford. 'He obviously hasn't seen the league. The standard is high. I always say this, people always judge it on not seeing it, you know? And you have to see it first hand to have your own opinion. If people went there and went to some games, they'd soon realise. 'I know it's a good standard. You would never knock it once you've been there. It is tough.' Fernandes revealed earlier this week that he decided to reject a lucrative proposal from Al-Hilal after mulling things over with his wife. ‌ 'It was a very ambitious proposal," Fernandes said during a press conference ahead of Portugal's meeting with Germany. 'The president was a fantastic person. We never discussed the amount [initially]. With my agent? Of course. Then, I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career. She was someone who always supported me a lot. 'It was an easy move, even at a family level. I had Joao Cancelo there, my children are used to playing with him in the national team, we have a great friendship. 'But I want to maintain myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions, and I feel capable of it.'

Trevoh Chalobah hoping his England career lasts longer than brother Nathaniel's

The Chelsea defender has received his maiden call-up for Thomas Tuchel's squad for forthcoming games against Andorra and Senegal following a successful season. He will be hoping to get on the pitch in the World Cup qualifier against the minnows in Barcelona on Saturday or the City Ground friendly against the African side three days later. His sibling Nathaniel, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, won his one and only England cap in a Nations League win over Spain in 2018, appearing for six minutes and 54 seconds as a late substitute. And Trevoh is hoping that this is just the start for him. The 25-year-old said: 'When I found out I phoned my dad, spoke to my family, let them know, and they were over the moon for me also. And my older brother as well, Nathaniel. He was happy for me also. 'Obviously, him being here also, and to see his younger brother do the same, it was a very proud moment for him. And hopefully I can be here even more. 'It's been a journey for my parents. Obviously, they've seen the highs and lows, and they've been there every single step of the way. It's a good moment for them to share.' Nathaniel Chalobah, left, made his only appearance for England against Spain in 2018 (Nick Potts/PA) Chalobah is one of five Chelsea players in the squad and he knows boss Tuchel well as the German handed him his Stamford Bridge debut. It has been an impressive season for Chalobah as he starred on loan at Crystal Palace before returning to Chelsea to help the Blues to Conference League glory and Champions League qualification, with a trip to the United States for the Club World Cup still to come. He added: 'Individually for me, it's been a very good season. This has been one of my goals, and it's good to share with the Chelsea players. 'It just shows the quality that Chelsea produce and the players, it's good to be here with them also and share that moment. 'They've obviously eased me in here and helped me. As I said, it just shows the quality and the players Chelsea are producing this over the years, it's been amazing. 'I'm here, being called up to England, and it's going to keep carrying on hopefully.' While most of the England squad will be heading on holiday after the Senegal match, Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates will be going to the US for the revamped Club World Cup. He said: 'This is the time after the internationals you probably want a holiday. But it's going to be physically tough, it's a different environment. 'But it's important, us as players want to be competing at the highest level and playing against very good teams. This is what footballers want to be doing, and hopefully getting a trophy.'
