Opinion: [A]rtificial [I]nequality: The Inequitable Environmental Cost of Artificial Intelligence

AI apps have a hidden cost.
Walk into a room and ask people their thoughts about the last few years of artificial intelligence (AI) development, and you will get as many opinions as people. Some might say some variation on how Gen AI and large language models are the next evolutionary step in digital technology , freeing us from mundane tasks and elevating our creativity to new heights, while others will criticize it as a technology that cheapens creativity and threatens livelihoods . However, regardless of the benefits or drawbacks of AI, there is the consequence of its environmental footprint. In the rush to advance and implement AI use in the past few years, the environmental costs of increasing electricity and water usage have been relatively unregulated and often more strongly affect less developed nations, reflecting a continuation of global inequalities in which the benefits are reaped by nations primarily in the global north while the consequences felt in the global south.
The environmental costs of AI begin before a single command is run. AI programs like ChatGPT or Claude require large data centers equipped with large numbers of graphics processing units (GPUs), such as those made by Nvidia. As the United Nations Environmental Programme notes, these powerful chips 'rely on critical mineral and rare elements, which are often mined unsustainably.' Previously, a majority of rare element extraction has been from China, who initially did not have strong environmental regulations on their extraction; most of the environmental damage caused by the boom in rare element mining was because the cheapest methods were often the most environmentally destructive , leaving China with tens of billions of dollars in costs for environmental cleanup amidst rural communities suffering from the long-term fallout. However, as global demand continues to grow, Chinese mining grows more expensive, and other developed nations seek to reduce their reliance on a single source, Africa is increasingly being seen as a potential source of high quality, low cost rare earth metals . Unfortunately, the past few years have already seen the devastating environmental consequences of rare metal mining in Africa, producing 'significant socio-ecological impacts including driving loss of rich biodiversity' and the 'displacement of communities.' Consequently, the strong demand for new GPU chips for AI is contributing to environmental harms both in the present and potentially the future in regions of the global south like Sub-Saharan Africa.
In addition to the minerals for chips, AI is also 'highly energy intensive,' as it requires large data centers running many GPUs in order to perform the complex calculations required to, for example, predict the text for a formal email or generate a picture of an apple. Although it is difficult to exactly calculate the electricity cost of a single AI request, in an interview with NPR, Jesse Dodge, research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI, said 'One query to ChatGPT uses approximately as much electricity as could light one lightbulb for about 20 minutes' . On a larger scale, according to Harvard Business Review, by 2026 AI is expected to 'exceed the annual electricity consumption of a small country like Belgium .' While strides have been made in switching to more sustainable energy sources like wind and solar, the majority of electricity generation in the world is through fossil fuels like oil, gas, and coal. Accordingly, tech giants like Google report a roughly 50% increase in their greenhouse gas emissions , with the power consumption of their new AI data centers primarily responsible. Additionally, there are stark differences between the types of electricity used in data centers in Europe versus those in Asia, such as how Google's Finish data centers used '97% carbon-free energy,' whereas its Asian centers were '4-18%.' In effect, the negative externalities of electrical production have been shifted to less developed regions.
A third aspect of AI's environmental impact is its heavy use of water. Due to the high heat generated in data centers, water cooling is required for their safe operation, with estimates at 'up to 9 liters of water' evaporated for every kilowatt-hour of electricity used. The water to cool these data centers is increasingly coming from the same sources as drinking water. For instance, in nations like Chile and Uruguay, Google is planning to 'tap into the same reservoirs that supply drinking water.' This comes at a time in which there is a global freshwater crisis, with 'between two and three billion people,' primarily in the global south, suffering from a lack of potable water at least part of each year. In consequence, as the cooling demands of AI mount, there is a risk of an ever-greater strain on freshwater resources, the burden of which would fall inequitably upon less developed nations in the global south.
While AI continues to evolve and society engages with the question of how to most responsibly employ it, the environmental costs associated with it are increasingly part of that conversation. In particular, as the benefits and costs of AI are currently inequitably divided between the global north and south, policymakers should consider how to responsibly manage AI's footprint as part of the larger discussion on environmental sustainability in the twenty-first century. Just over a year ago, Apple Intelligence was announced. It continues to be somewhat of a 'meh' affair compared to other rival products like Microsoft's Copilot and Google's Gemini. What was not 'meh' was the support for Apple's generative AI bundle, which extended all the way back to the M1 silicon introduced in 2020. Even the fresh batch of AI features — such as live translations and intelligent Shortcuts — are fully supported on the machines that will soon be five generations old. I can't say the same about Windows and its AI-powered rebirth with the Copilot package. Before confusion ensues, let me clear things up. Recommended Videos Copilot is a suite of AI features, just like Gemini or Apple Intelligence. Then we have Copilot+ machines, which is a branding for PCs that meet certain hardware-level requirements to enable AI-powered features on Windows laptops and PCs. Here's the weird part. A healthy bunch of Intel silicon launched in 2025 — even those in the powerful 'H' class — don't meet those AI processing requirements. All of it has created a weird kind of divide in the Windows ecosystem where certain advanced AI features are locked to a handful of cheaper machines, even if you paid a much higher price to get a laptop with a far more powerful processor. Oddly, it's not just the hardware, but the software experience that now feels different. Copilot+ is not merely AI hype Before we get into the hardware limitations, let's break down the features. Copilot+ machines require a powerful hardware chip for AI acceleration to enable certain features, down to the OS level. For example, in the Settings app, Microsoft is pushing its own Mu small language model (SML) that runs entirely on the NPU. The NPU on a chip, however, must meet a certain performance baseline, something not even Intel and AMD silicon launched in 2025 fulfill universally. Let's start with the AI-powered Settings app interactions. It can now understand natural language queries and make suggestions so that users can directly take action with a click. If you type something like 'My screen doesn't feel smooth,' the Settings app will show a dialog box underneath the search bar, where you get an actionable button to increase the refresh rate and make the interactions smoother. Apple is chasing something similar and has implemented it within the Spotlight system in macOS Tahoe. Next, we have Recall. It's like a time machine system that takes snapshots of your PC activity in the background and analyzes them contextually. In the future, if you seek to revisit or find something, you can simply type a natural language query and find a record of the activity, complete with a link to the webpage or app you were working with. It almost feels magical, and you can read more about my experience here. The crucial benefit is that a healthy bunch of Copilot+ AI features will run on-device, which means they won't require an internet connection. That's convenient, but in hindsight, it's a huge sigh of relief that all user activity remains locked to your device and nothing is sent to servers. Copilot+ hardware also enables a bunch of creative features such as Cocreator and Generative Fill in Paint, Super Resolution, Image Creator, and Restyle in the native Photos app. But there are a few that are meaningful for day-to-day PC usage. With Click to Do in the Snipping Tool, the AI analyzes the text and image on the screen, somewhat like Google Lens and Apple Intelligence. You can select text, look it up on the web with a single click, send email, open a website, summarize, rewrite, and take a wide range of image actions such as copy, share, visual search in Bing, erase objects, remove background, and do more — without ever opening another app. On the more practical side of things, we have translated Live Captions that cover over 40 languages. The translation and captioning happen in real-time and work during video calls and video watching, too. Finally, we have Windows Studio Effects, which can perform chores such as automatic frame adjustment, portrait lighting tweaks, switch background effects, minimize noise, and even make gaze adjustment. The Copilot+ hardware wall Even if you splurge $4,899 on a Razer Blade 18 with an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor and Nvidia's top-of-the-line GeForce RTX 5090 graphics, your beastly gaming laptop still won't be able to run the Copilot+ features in Windows 11. That's because the NPU on this processor can only manage 13 TOPS, but a pint-sized $800 Microsoft tablet with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor can handle all the exclusive Copilot+ features just fine. It's disheartening, because the Copilot+ experiences in Windows 11 are meaningful OS advancements. Most of them, at least. I have used a few of them extensively, and they feel like a practical evolution. Yet, depriving machines that merely miss out on a powerful NPU, despite packing plenty of compute and graphics processing power, is simply unfortunate. Microsoft has laid out tight hardware requirements for machines that can bear the Copilot+ badge — 256GB of storage, 16GB DDR5 RAM, and a processor with a dedicated AI accelerator chip that can output a minimum of 40 TOPS performance. That's a bottleneck from both ends. First, there are still a healthy bunch of machines that ship with 8GB of RAM, and that too, the DDR4 type memory. Take, for example, the Asus Vivobook 17, which costs $700 and ships with 8GB of DDR4 memory on the entry-point configuration, even with the variant that packs a 13th-generation Intel processor. Let's say you pay up to reach 16GB of RAM. Despite that added stress on your wallet, you are still limited by the RAM type and won't be able to run Copilot+ tools on the machine. It's worth mentioning that there are a LOT of Windows machines that still pack 8GB of RAM, and even when they go up to 16GB capacity, they still rely on the DDR4-type memory. Now, it's time to address the elephant in the room. The silicon situation. The latest from Intel is the Ultra 200 series processor family, which is bifurcated across Arrow Lake and Lunar Lake lines. These Ultra 200 series processors are available in four formats: V-series, U-series, H-series, HX-series, and H-series. Out of the four brackets, only the V-series processors support Copilot+ experiences on Windows 11. Even the enthusiast-class H and HX series processors don't meet the NPU requirements, and as such, they are devoid of the Copilot+ AI features. As perplexing as the situation remains with Intel Core 200 series silicon, the situation with AMD and its Copilot+ readiness isn't too different. At the moment, only AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series processors fall under the Copilot+ bracket. That means if you invested in a top-shelf AMD silicon in the past few years, or even aim to build an AMD gaming rig this year, you either lose out on Copilot+ perks or must pick from the Ryzen AI 300 series line-up. Even older Macs do better The situation with Copilot+ is weird because it has created fault lines in the Windows 11 experience that don't make sense, neither from a price perspective, nor from a firepower angle. It even makes one feel bad about spending a fortune on a top-tier Intel processor, only to find it locked beyond next-gen AI features in Windows 11 because the NPU isn't up to the task. The only other option is to pick a Qualcomm Snapdragon X-series processor. But in doing so, you run into the compatibility hurdles that come with Windows on Arm. Plus, the GPU limitations rule out gaming or other demanding tasks where you need a powerful GPU. Right now, it seems like Copilot+ is a bag of serious caveats. And as Microsoft's team comes with more AI-first experiences, the gulf within Windows 11 is only going to widen. An $800 Copilot+ machine will run native AI experiences that even a powerful desktop won't be able to handle in the near future. The situation within the Apple ecosystem is just the opposite. Even if you have a nearly five-year-old M1 MacBook Air, you can run all the Apple Intelligence features just fine. Now, one can argue that AI is not the deciding factor for picking up a laptop. But as companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google deeply integrate AI packages such as Copilot, Siri, and Gemini across their OS at the native level, these AI features will essentially serve as a key computing evolution. Google has already given us a glimpse of how tightly interweaving Gemini across its Workspace tools can flesh out, and somewhat similar is the progress of Apple Intelligence within maCOS. But when it comes to the OS-level AI progress, it's Microsoft that finds itself in an odd place where a huge chunk of Windows 11 users are going to feel left out, while macOS users will move forward just fine even on aging hardware.

Reddit turns 20, and it's going big on AI

Reddit has become known as the place to go for unfiltered answers from real, human users. But as the site celebrates its 20th anniversary this week, the company is increasingly thinking about how it can augment that human work with AI. The initial rollout of AI tools, like Reddit Answers, is 'going really well,' CTO Chris Slowe tells The Verge. At a time when Google and its AI tools are going to Reddit for human answers, Reddit is going to its own human answers to power AI features, hoping they're the key to letting people unlock useful information from its huge trove of posts and communities. Reddit Answers is the first big user-facing piece of the company's AI push. Like other AI search tools, Reddit Answers will show an AI-generated summary to a query. But Reddit Answers also very prominently links to where the content came from — and as a user, you also know that the link will point you to another place on Reddit instead of some SEO-driven garbage. It also helps that the citations feel much more prominent than on tools like Google's AI Mode — a tool that news publishers have criticized as 'theft.' 'If you just want the short summary, it's there,' Slowe says. 'If you want to delve deeper, it's an easier way to get into it.' In order for those AI answers to be useful, they need to continue to be based on real human responses. Reddit now has to be on the lookout for AI-generated comments and posts infiltrating its site. It's an important thing for the platform to stay on top of, says Slowe: Reddit's key benefit is that you can trust that a lot of what's written on it is written by humans, and AI spam could erode that. 'Trust is an essential component of the way Reddit works,' Slowe says. The platform is using AI and LLMs to help with moderation and user safety, too. The other half of Reddit's AI equation is selling its own data, which is extremely valuable to AI giants. The changes that forced notable apps to shut down and spurred widespread user protests (which Slowe referred to as 'some unpleasantness that happened about two years ago') were positioned by CEO Steve Huffman as more of a way to get AI companies to pony up. And two of the biggest companies have already done so, as Reddit has cut AI deals with both Google and OpenAI. But Reddit also has to be on the lookout for improper use of its data, with the most recent crackdown being its lawsuit against Anthropic. 'At the end of the day, we aren't a charity,' Slowe says. Reddit wants to provide a service that people can use for free, 'but don't build your business on our back and expect us not to try and defend ourselves.' Still, with new AI-powered search products from Google, OpenAI, and others on the rise, Reddit risks getting buried by AI summaries. And Reddit is experimenting with AI-powered searches on its own platform. So what's the company's goal for the future? 'Keep allowing Reddit to be Reddit,' Slowe says. 'I think that the underlying model for Reddit hasn't really drastically changed since the early days.' The platform doesn't require real names (your username is a 'coveted thing' that many people keep private, Slowe says), everything is focused on text, and reputation is more important than who you are; all of these elements marked 'a drastic difference with the rest of social media.' Reddit is also facing competition from a slightly different angle: Digg, which is making a return with the backing of founder Kevin Rose and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. Slowe didn't have much to say about it, though. 'I always love seeing innovation and I always love seeing new bends on old business models.'

We acknowledge shares are trading near historical highs, but think this is justified given its early AI lead and strong incumbent position in a tight market, esp. favorable in the current environment.' -Wells Fargo analyst Michael Turrin. A doctor in a laboratory, overseeing the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). According to Turrin, Microsoft's AI business has the potential to reach $100 billion in revenue by fiscal 2029. The company has already scaled its AI business to $13 billion in annual recurring revenue in less than three years, which is it its 'fastest product ramp ever,' despite significant capacity constraints. The firm anticipated that the business nears $20B exiting fiscal year/June 2025 and accelerate further as constraints ease/capacity comes online. It also expects a growing emphasis on Copilot, Microsoft's AI assistant, looking ahead. Turrin believes that the application may reach critical mass by next year and bring in $12 billion in annual recurring revenue over time. 'Across the Microsoft 365 Commercial Cloud business we assume a total addressable population of 430M users between all user tiers. From this, we note that MSFT would only need to achieve ~10% adoption rate to reach the $10B annualized revenue run-rate mark, which also assumes an average ~20% discount.'
