Substitute Jennifer Echegini scored the 88th-minute winner as Nigeria came from two goals behind to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 on Saturday in a dramatic Women's Africa Cup of Nations final.
The triumph in Rabat confirmed the west Africans as the queens of women's football in Africa as they pulled off a record-extending 10th title in 13 editions.
It was the second successive final loss for Morocco, who led by two goals after 24 minutes only to concede three in the second half.
Nigeria stun the hosts
Esther Okoronkwo played a key role in the Super Falcons victory – scoring the first goal, creating the second and delivering the free-kick that Echegini finished to stun the home crowd.
Morocco, backed by a vibrant capacity crowd at the 21,000-seat Stade Olympique in the capital, took the lead on 12 minutes as Nigeria conceded for the first time in open play at the tournament.
Nigeria fluffed several chances to clear the ball and it fell just outside the area to Chebbak, whose perfectly placed, rising shot gave goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie no chance.
The lead doubled 12 minutes later as the ball flew across the Nigerian goalmouth to Sanaa Mssoudy, who ended a five-match goal drought by steering a low shot into the far corner of the net.
Nigeria had more possession in the opening half than the host nation, but managed only one shot on target and it did not trouble goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi.
Lifted spirits
But the Moroccan lead halved after 64 minutes as Okoronkwo sent Er-Rmichi the wrong way from a penalty after a VAR review showed a Folashade Ijamilusi cross striking a hand of Nouhaila Benzina.
The goal lifted the spirits of increasingly assertive Nigeria and they equalised seven minutes later when Okoronkwo turned creator with a pull-back that Ijamilusi pushed into the net from close range.
On Friday, Ghana finished third, winning a penalty shootout 4-3 against outgoing champions South Africa after a 1-1 play-off draw in regular time in Casablanca.
After two weakly struck spot kicks in a row by South Africa were saved to give Ghana the advantage, 19-year-old Nancy Amoh converted the decisive penalty with a low shot into the corner of the net.
A blunder by Ghana goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan gifted South Africa the lead on 45 minutes as she lost control of the ball just outside the box and Nonhlanhla Mthandi struck it into the net.
Persistent Ghanaian pressure finally paid off on 68 minutes when an Alice Kusi header came off the crossbar and long-serving South Africa shot-stopper Andile Dlamini conceded an own goal.
Victory was particularly sweet for the Black Queens as they were outplayed when losing 2-0 to Banyana Banyana (The Girls) in the group stage.
Ghana have won the four third place play-offs they qualified for while South Africa have lost four of five bronze medals matches.
The next Wafcon is scheduled for March 2026, also in Morocco, and will double as a qualifying competition for the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil.

Toronto minus big three offers opportunities

Greece's Stefanos Tsitsipas celebrates a point against Australia's Jordan Thompson during their men's singles match on day four of the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne Stefanos Tsitsipas. | AFP THE glaring absence of Big Three, Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner & Novak Djokovic at the Canadian Open, detracts from the typically star-studded line up at a Masters 1000. That said, Toronto opens the gate wider for those top seeds, seeking redemption, after below par performances at Wimbledon: Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Holger Rune. It also presents an opportunity to young guns snapping at the heels of all of the above namely, Joao Fonseca, Jacob Mensik, Arthur Fils and Gabriel Diallo. The Washington Open, immediately prior to Toronto, proved how proverbial underdogs can quickly take advantage of a derth of heavyweights in the Draw: World No 68, Davidovich Fokina cracked two Top 10 Players for the first time in his career, beating both Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton to arrive against all odds in the Final, where he squandered three championship points to allow Australian No 1, Alex De Minaur to be figuratively handed the trophy, on a silver platter. As inconsolable as newly married 'Fokie' was, in facing defeat at the hand of newly engaged 'Demon', the penny has dropped for the Spaniard- 'These are need to kill three times to win the match point..' The cockroach analogy proved accurate on this occasion. No 31 Anna Kalinskaya, applied as ruthless a mindset to outclass former US Open champion, Emma Raducanu; 6-4, 6-3, to book her berth in the Finals, only to be comprehensively squashed by Raducanu's co of US Open Finalist, Leylah Fernandez- who had rescued her epic three-set semi against third seed, Elena Rybakina, from a set and a break down- yet took less than an hour to bag her first Tour title. So what could Zverev and Tsitsipas, derive from these sudden surges in the careers of both Fernandez and Fokina, apart from his changing his coach and her improving her hitherto weak serve? It turns out sun, sea and solace did it for Zverev, when after an invitation from one of the best coaches of all time, Uncle Toni (Rafa's uncle) the German flew to Mallorca, to spend 10 days at the Nadal Academy, talking past midnight to Rafa himself. The 22-time Major title-holder reminded Zverev of what it was like to face him on Court. This is the second life changing moment for Zverev involving Nadal. His ankle injury, incurred mid match versus Rafa in the 2022 Roland Garros Semis, a match the German looked likely to win, forced him to be sidelined for a year. So far his Spanish sabbatical has seen him in good stead, Zverev pulled himself back from the brink of a first set tiebreak defeat, with a 52 shot rally, in his Toronto opener against Adam Walton and is still on track to clash with another first round Wimbledon fatality, Holger Rune, in the Quarters. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for Tsitsipas in turmoil: He suffered another first round walloping, 6-4,4-6,6-2 from American Chris OConnell and will be in danger of falling outside of the Top 30 for the first time since 2018. Brazilian Fonseca, too fell well short of expectation, post reaching Round three at his maiden Championships and was brought to heel by qualifier, Tristan Schoolgate. Miami champion, Jacob Mensik, is still in the mix, as is last year's finalist Andrew Rublev, who notched up his 250th Tour triumph, knocking off Frenchman Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-3. 2nd seed, Taylor Fritz is tantalizingly close to securing his Last-Eight spot in all nine of these Masters 1000s, with Diallo, the last Canadian standing, standing once again in the American's way. There was no five set thriller a la Wimbledon when these two butted heads, but rest assured emotions, flags and rackets soar, whenever an American top dog squares up to a Canadian underdog, on Canadian soil.

MTN8 quarter-finals herald the start of the PSL's new season

Abdeslam Ouaddou steps into the hot seat at Orlando Pirates, tasked with delivering silverware in a high-pressure season. Photo: Backpageix The Premier Soccer League will launch its 2025-26 season with the annual MTN8 quarter-finals, scheduled for the weekend. This single-leg knockout tournament features the top eight teams from last season's Premiership, and fans are eagerly awaiting the intensity of the first matches that promise to set the tone for the season ahead. Orlando Pirates will kick off the MTN8 action at the iconic Orlando Stadium, hosting Polokwane City. Pirates will be looking to showcase their squad full of new talent and embark on what they hope will be a glorious season. Among the standout signings taking centre stage is the former Polokwane star, Oswin Appollis, who returns to the pitch with a point to prove. Another addition that has garnered significant attention is the skilful Pirates midfielder Sipho 'Masterchef' Mbule, known for his flair and creativity. These players could be vital for the Pirates as they aim to reclaim their MTN8 dominance. This match marks the official start of the Abdeslam Ouaddou era at Pirates, as the Moroccan coach takes the helm following the departure of José Riveiro. Following their pre-season tour of Spain, Ouaddou and his squad are set to make a strong statement, especially with Pirates being the reigning champions after clinching title victories for the past three consecutive years. Getting a fourth title in a row would send a message to the rest of the league, signalling their intent to also pursue their first league title since 2012. Following a remarkable showing at the FIFA Club World Cup, league champions Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their first competitive match of the season. They host Richards Bay at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium on Sunday. Stellenbosch FC's resilience will be put to the test by AmaZulu on Sunday. The Winelands club are now confronting a new set of challenges as it navigates a wave of player departures that could have a significant impact on their campaign. In the remaining quarter-final, Sekhukhune United will begin their campaign against TS Galaxy at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. They have shown huge improvement in the Premiership, but are yet to win their first trophy.

The end of an era: Can Max Verstappen make a comeback?

Red Bull fans will be happy to know that Max Verstappen will be staying another season. | AFP Image: AFP There used to be a period in Formula 1 when Max Verstappen's name was on top of everything - practice sessions, warm ups, sprints and main races. But this season, its been an all orange affair and the first practice session of the Hungartian grand prix weeked hasn't been any different. Verstappen was almost a whole second of the lead pace set by Lando Norris while his fellow Red Bull teammate Yuki Tsunoda was struggling at the bottom of the pack. Ferrari have grown out of Red Bull's shadow and seem to be the front runner up behind McLaren's pace - with Charles Leclerc finding the right lines around the Hungaroring on Friday. Norris, Oscar Piastri and Leclerc made up the top three drivers during FP1. Racing Bulls rookie Isack Hadjar had a phenomenal session, posting the fourth quickest time of the day, inches ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Verstappen managed to pull a rabbit out of a hat last week in Belgium when he beat the McLarens and won the Sprint at Spa, twisting the RB21 up and over Eau Rouge to give his home fans something to cheer. But the long term race pace just wasn't there for the Champion, getting outrun by Piastri (P1) and Norris (P2) again. Piastri's win last week and Norris's P2 podium finish has all but solidified an orange victory at the end of this season. Fans and maybe even McLaren boss himself, Zak Brown, don't know yet just which driver in McLaren will lift the trophy. Although Piastri has dominated his teammate this season, Norris looked like he isn't throwing in the towel over the course of the past few races, and closing the point gap between them. For the four-time World Champion Verstappen, however, it doesn't look like he's equaling Michael Schumacher's record of five-striaght World Titles any time soon. Pity though, it would have capped off a hall-of-fame level career at Red Bull, although there will always be a cloud hanging over the 2021 title. Red Bull just haven't been able to deliver a car capable of allowing Verstappen to compete at McLaren or recently, Ferrari's level. The team have experimented with different aerodynamic appraoches for the first half of the season, even opting for a super skinny rear wing at one point. Now 109 points behind Piastri in the leader, Verstappen will need to find whatever last bit of juice the RB21 has to offer before its too late. While it already may be a little too late in terms of points, its Formula 1, so you never know what type of second half McLaren might have. Red Bull senior advisor Helmut Marko came out swinging this week, defending his team an d Verstappen's seat for next season. The Hungarian GP posed an important mark on the calendar for Red Bull fans, mainly because of the release clause in Verstappen's contract. It allegedly states that if he is fourth or lower in standings, he is allowed to exit the contract. Marko said it was ridiculous "other people thought they knew the contract better than us", after he was quizzed about it by Austrian media. According to Verstappen, he never had any plans of leaving but did enjoy stirring the pot a bit. "That's me, and I do that on purpose because it makes no sense to start throwing things around and actually that should be the same for everyone. "Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama but for me it's always been quite clear and also for next year. "I'm discussing with the team already the plans, the things that we want to change next year so that means I'm also staying with the team for next year and if my boat is next to Toto's then the boat is next to Toto's," Verstappen said in Hungary. He's confirmed Verstappen's place in Red Bull next year, which was widely speculated about. It was alleged that Toto Wolff wanted to sign Verstappen onto Mercedes, but with the new regulations coming into effect next year, Marko said the move would not have " made sense" . "I can confirm Verstappen will be driving for Red Bull next season," he said. According to Verstappen, he never had any plans of leaving but did enjoy stirring the pot a bit.
