‘Twice was enough': Dr Mahathir rules out return as PM even if Perikatan wins Putrajaya, says happy to advise

Malay Mail18-07-2025
ALOR SETAR, July 18 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has reportedly said he has no intention of returning as prime minister for a third time should Perikatan Nasional (PN) assume federal power.
The former prime minister, who just turned 100, said he is no longer suited to lead but would continue to offer his advice based on his decades of political experience.
'I'm old now, 100 years old. I can't deliver fiery speeches like I used to. I'm not trying to take the place of the younger generation.
'We welcome young people. I'm not looking to be prime minister again — twice was enough,' he was quoted saying by Sinar Harian at the Himpunan Mandat Negarawan rally here yesterday.
'But I do want to offer some advice because I've been prime minister for 24 years, and I've been in politics for over 80,' he added,
Dr Mahathir claimed that a PN-led administration would be open to advice and capable of solving key issues such as poverty.
'If we change the government, we'll have a prime minister who is open to advice. I believe many problems can be solved, including the issue of poverty,' he said.
He said tackling poverty should be a government priority and that PN could deliver on this.
'The government must prioritise solving the problem of poverty. PN can do this — PN can reduce poverty. That's our hope, and that's why we're holding this rally,' he said.
The Himpunan Mandat Negarawan rally organised PN was a precursor to Turun Anwar, a larger event set for July 26 in Kuala Lumpur, aimed at pressuring Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to resign.

The Malaysia-initiated special meeting between Thailand and Cambodia to resolve the ongoing military confrontation along the border areas of the two countries ended on a positive note. bootstrap slideshow Both nations agreed to end fighting at midnight on Monday – a major step towards reducing tensions and restoring peace and security. 'A brilliant result of the meeting, and I thank Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for taking the initiative to coordinate and host the meeting. 'I believe that this ceasefire agreement between the Cambodian army and the Thai army is a key basis for building mutual trust and improvement of the situation towards normalcy in the future,' Manet said on his Facebook posting upon his return from Malaysia this evening. Manet and Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai met for the first time since tension broke out between the two neighbours on July 24. Cambodia and Thailand were dragged into a diplomatic crisis following the armed conflict in the northern part of the Kingdom. In his posting, Manet also thanked the United States President Donald Trump and the Chinese government for their support of the ceasefire efforts.

Those named to the Court of Appeal are believed to be Justices Shahnaz Sulaiman, Evrol Mariette Peters, Ong Chee Kwan, Radzi Abdul Hamid, Leonard David Shim, Nadzarin Wok Nordin, Meor Hashimi Abdul Hamid and K Muniandy. The judicial commissioners promoted as High Court judges are expected to be Justices Maslinda @ Linda Ainal, Faridz Gohim Abdullah, Choong Yew Choy, Saiful Azian Mokhtar, Evawani Farisyta Mohamad, S Indra Nehru, M Sumathi, Moses Susayan, Kan Weng Hin, Wendy Ooi, Rosli Yusoff, Hazlina Hussain, Roszianayati Ahmad and Haldar Abdul Aziz. They are expected to receive their letters of appointment from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara today, as will the new chief justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais and the new chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, Azizah Nawawi. Under the Federal Constitution, judicial appointments are made by the king, on the advice of the prime minister and in consultation with the Conference of Rulers. Names of potential candidates are submitted to the prime minister by the nine-member judicial appointments commission, chaired by the chief justice of Malaysia. Wan Ahmad Farid will be Malaysia's 17th chief justice, succeeding Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat who retired earlier this month. Abu Bakar Jais replaces Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, who retired on July 2, and Azizah replaces Abdul Rahman Sebli, who left office last week. Wan Ahmad Farid, as the nation's top judge, would take his oath of office before the king, while Abu Bakar will take his oath of office in Putrajaya before senior Court of Appeal judge P Ravinthran, while Azizah will do so before Justice Dean Wayne Daly, the most senior judge in Sabah and Sarawak. The Court of Appeal appointees will be sworn in before Abu Bakar in Putrajaya; High Court judges assigned to the peninsula will take their oath before Hasnah, while those on the bench in Sabah and Sarawak will be sworn in before Azizah.

2 extra judges' panels to expedite appeal hearings

Abu Bakar Jais is the 13th Court of Appeal president since its establishment in 1994. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : Two more judges' panels will be set up to speed up the disposal of criminal and civil appeals, newly appointed Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais said. He said there are currently eight panels. 'Hopefully, with more judges appointed, we can expedite the disposal of cases,' he told reporters after witnessing the elevation of six Court of Appeal judges and the confirmation of 14 judicial commissioners as High Court judges here today. With the appointment of the six judges, the Court of Appeal now comprises 32 judges, the maximum allowed under the Federal Constitution. Bakar is the 13th president since the appellate court's establishment in 1994. The Court of Appeal is often referred to as the 'engine of the judiciary' since it serves as the intermediate appellate court, reviewing decisions made by the High Court and the apex court for cases that originate from subordinate courts. Bakar described his appointment as a huge responsibility and a significant challenge in a country with a multiracial and multireligious population. 'Of course, as president, I cannot satisfy everyone, but I will discharge my duties without fear of favour,' he said. He also said there were highly capable judges who would assist him in fulfilling his responsibilities. Newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, who had earlier taken his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara, was also present. At the Palace of Justice, Bakar took his oath of office before senior Court of Appeal judge P Ravinthran. Justice Azizah Nawawi, the new chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, took her oath of office before Dean Wayne Daly, the most senior judge in East Malaysia. She is also the first woman to hold the position.
