2 extra judges' panels to expedite appeal hearings
PUTRAJAYA : Two more judges' panels will be set up to speed up the disposal of criminal and civil appeals, newly appointed Court of Appeal president Abu Bakar Jais said.
He said there are currently eight panels.
'Hopefully, with more judges appointed, we can expedite the disposal of cases,' he told reporters after witnessing the elevation of six Court of Appeal judges and the confirmation of 14 judicial commissioners as High Court judges here today.
With the appointment of the six judges, the Court of Appeal now comprises 32 judges, the maximum allowed under the Federal Constitution.
Bakar is the 13th president since the appellate court's establishment in 1994.
The Court of Appeal is often referred to as the 'engine of the judiciary' since it serves as the intermediate appellate court, reviewing decisions made by the High Court and the apex court for cases that originate from subordinate courts.
Bakar described his appointment as a huge responsibility and a significant challenge in a country with a multiracial and multireligious population.
'Of course, as president, I cannot satisfy everyone, but I will discharge my duties without fear of favour,' he said.
He also said there were highly capable judges who would assist him in fulfilling his responsibilities.
Newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh, who had earlier taken his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara, was also present.
At the Palace of Justice, Bakar took his oath of office before senior Court of Appeal judge P Ravinthran.
Justice Azizah Nawawi, the new chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, took her oath of office before Dean Wayne Daly, the most senior judge in East Malaysia.
She is also the first woman to hold the position.

We're not behind the planned ‘Turun Sanusi' rally, says Kedah PH
The 'Himpunan Rakyat Honggaq Kedah', scheduled for Aug 24, is aimed at calling for the resignation of Sanusi Nor as menteri besar. PETALING JAYA : Kedah Pakatan Harapan has denied any involvement in organising the 'Himpunan Rakyat Honggaq Kedah' rally on Aug 24, aimed at calling for Sanusi Nor's resignation as menteri besar. Kedah PH deputy chairman Asmirul Anuar Aris said the state chapter will not stop its members from taking part in the gathering, which is being organised by a coalition of NGOs supportive of the unity government. 'PH is not involved in the rally despite receiving an invitation. However, members and supporters of PH parties are free to attend as part of exercising democratic rights,' Asmirul, who also chairs Kedah Amanah, told FMT. 'I've been informed that the rally is being organised by NGOs who intend to present 10 demands to the state government. 'These reportedly include matters related to entrepreneurship, land taxes, agriculture, and sports.' Promotional items for the rally have gone viral on TikTok, with claims that it is being organised by the Sekretariat Suara Anak Kedah, and widely shared by supporters of the unity government. The rally is expected to take place in front of the Kedah menteri besar's office at Wisma Darul Aman. Kedah police chief Adzli Abu Shah said the organisers have yet to submit any formal notification for the gathering. He said he had only learned about the event through social media and is still waiting for official details from the organisers.

Malaysia's mediation role boosts US tariff talks, says minister
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's mediation in the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire has strengthened its position in tariff discussions with the United States, according to Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz. 'Honestly I don't know, I didn't ask... but it definitely helps,' he said when asked about the diplomatic spillover effects. The ceasefire was among topics discussed between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump, highlighting Malaysia's ASEAN leadership. Thailand and Cambodia's border tensions escalated in late May, with clashes near Preah Vihear resulting in casualties. Malaysia's intervention aligns with its regional peacekeeping commitments. On tariffs, Tengku Zafrul emphasised fairness: 'We want the rate to be competitive with ASEAN neighbours... the 19 per cent rate is fair.' A joint Malaysia-US statement on tariffs is expected this weekend. - Bernama

Give New Village residents freehold titles, says Gerakan
New Villages were initially established to curb the communist insurgency in 1948. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gerakan president Dominic Lau has called on the government to grant freehold land titles to residents of New Villages to reflect the Madani administration's inclusive ideals. In welcoming the commitment to develop these New Villages under the 13th Malaysia Plan, he said giving the residents freehold titles for their homes would increase the value of their properties and raise government revenue through higher taxes. Lau, who acknowledged the legal limitations under the National Land Code, said this suggestion should still be seriously considered. 'If Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is truly committed to building an inclusive government, this step should be seriously explored,' he said in a statement. He pointed out that housing and local government minister Nga Kor Ming of DAP previously championed the idea of granting permanent titles while in the opposition. 'I still remember when he made this proposal. He said it was the result of thorough research and believed it could restore justice to elderly residents who were forced to relocate to these New Villages during the 1948 (Malayan) Emergency,' he said, adding that it was time to test Nga's sincerity and commitment. Last year, Nga drew brickbats from opposition parties and Umno for proposing that New Villages, which were initially established to curb the communist insurgency, be nominated as a Unesco world heritage site. Umno had argued that it would impact the position, constitutional status and rights of the Malays. Under the 13MP, the government plans to implement a New Village Development Master Plan which would involve upgrading hawker sites and financing schemes for entrepreneurs. In January, Malaysian Chinese New Village secretariat chairman Khoo Poay Tiong said the areas would be developed as tourist attractions ahead of Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
