Have sections of the US Constitution gone missing from government website?

It didn't take long for internet sleuths to notice that something was missing on the Library of Congress website that annotates the United States Constitution. Reddit users pointed out on Wednesday that the website omitted text from some sections of Article 1, which include provisions about the right of habeas corpus as well as limits on congressional and state power. Using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, people found that the full text appeared on the Library of Congress website on July 17 but was missing in snapshots after that date. Some people mistakenly said President Donald Trump's administration removed these provisions from the constitution entirely without Congress's input. 'BREAKING: The official US government website has quietly removed Sections 9 and 10 of Article I from the Constitution,' one Threads post said on Wednesday. 'Let me say that again: They didn't amend the Constitution. They didn't debate it in Congress. They just erased two of the most protective sections; the ones that deal with habeas corpus, limits on federal power, and Congress's sole authority to set tariffs.' Altering the text on a website would not remove or erase sections of the constitution. It can be changed only through a formal amendment process, which begins in the US Congress, which can modify or replace existing provisions. The constitution's full text is also available on the websites for the National Archives and the nonprofit National Constitution Center. The amendment process outlined in Article 5 is the only way to alter the constitution. Any proposed amendment must first be approved by a two-thirds vote in both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. Then it must be ratified by three-quarters of the state legislatures or via state ratifying conventions. Government website omits constitution sections On Wednesday about 11am in Washington, DC (15:00 GMT), the Library of Congress posted on X that the missing sections were 'due to a coding error'. 'We have been working to correct this and expect it to be resolved soon,' the post read. The website on Wednesday also displayed a banner that said: 'The Constitution Annotated website is currently experiencing data issues. We are working to resolve this issue and regret the inconvenience.' The institution issued an update on X a few hours later that the website was fixed. 'Missing sections of the Constitution Annotated website have been restored,' it said. 'Upkeep of Constitution Annotated and other digital resources is a critical part of the Library's mission, and we appreciate the feedback that alerted us to the error and allowed us to fix it.' Article 1 establishes the federal government's legislative branch. Its missing sections included portions of Section 8 and all of Sections 9 and 10, which largely focus on limits on congressional and state power. Before being restored, the text of Article 1 ended in Section 8, just before a line that lists Congress's ability to provide and maintain a navy. Section 9, which was temporarily deleted, details limits on congressional power. It addresses habeas corpus, the legal procedure that grants people in government custody the right to challenge their detention in court. The section says Congress may not suspend habeas corpus 'unless when in Cases of Rebellion or Invasion the public Safety may require it'. Habeas corpus has been in the headlines during the second Trump administration. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller told reporters in May that the administration was looking into suspending habeas corpus. Later that month, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wrongly said habeas corpus is a right the president has to remove people from the US. Section 10, which was also temporarily removed, covers restrictions on US states, including regulating tariffs without Congress's consent. Our ruling A Threads post said an official US government website 'quietly removed Sections 9 and 10 of Article I from the Constitution' without input from Congress. On Wednesday, the Library of Congress's annotated website of the US Constitution was missing sections of Article 1. The library said the issue was related to a coding error, and it was corrected shortly afterwards. Website alterations do not affect US law or the constitution. The document can be changed only through a formal amendment process initiated by Congress. We rate this post false.

Police Academy wins Prince Naif Arab Security Award for second consecutive year

QNA Doha The Ministry of Interior (MoI), represented by the Police Academy, achieved a new Arab milestone by winning first place for the second consecutive year in the Prince Naif Award for Arab Security, in the category of Leading Security Programmes. This reaffirms its leadership in advancing modern security systems at the regional level. In a statement on Thursday, the Ministry of Interior said that the award came in recognition of the specialised study submitted by the Academy on 'Virtual Security Operations Centre', which examined the centre's role in implementing virtual security exercises using advanced simulation systems that simulate complex security scenarios and devise unconventional solutions to address them. The study also highlighted the development of mechanisms for activating joint operations rooms between various stakeholders, enhancing security integration and raising the readiness of the national response system. Secretary-General of the Arab Interior Ministers Council Dr. Mohammad bin Ali Kuman presented the certificate of achievement to Vice-President of the Police Academy and Director of the Police College Lieutenant-Colonel Fahd Saeed Al Subaie during a ceremony held at the General Secretariat headquarters in Tunisia. This achievement reflects the Academy's vital role in preparing and qualifying security cadres and leaders through innovative training programmes and joint professional exercises that embody the Qatari model of modern security leadership and keep pace with the rapid transformations in the security environment at the regional and international levels.

Syria declares new Suwayda ceasefire, deploys forces to ‘restore security'

Agencies Damascus Syria's security forces have begun deploying in the restive southern province of Suwayda, a Ministry of Interior spokesperson has said, where heavy fighting between Druze and Bedouin armed groups and government forces has left hundreds dead, compounded by Israeli military intervention. The deployment on Saturday came hours after the United States announced that Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire, an as yet uncertain truce amidst overnight fighting. Syria's government announced the ceasefire early on Saturday, saying in a statement it is being enacted 'to spare Syrian blood, preserve the unity of Syrian territory, the safety of its people'. The country's president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in a televised address, stated that he 'received international calls to intervene in what is happening in Suwayda and restore security to the country'. Israeli intervention has 'reignited tensions' in the city, with fighting there 'a dangerous turning point', he said, also thanking the US for its support. Earlier, Interior Ministry spokesman Noureddine al-Baba had said in a statement on Telegram that 'internal security forces have begun deploying in Suwayda province … with the aim of protecting civilians and putting an end to the chaos.' Ethnically charged clashes between Druze and Bedouin armed groups and government forces have reportedly left hundreds dead in recent days. On Wednesday, Israel launched heavy air attacks on Syria's Ministry of Defence in the heart of Damascus, and also hit Syrian government forces in the Suwayda region, claiming it had done so to protect the Druze, who it calls its 'brothers'. 'Al-Sharaa said that national unity was a priority for his government and that part of the role of the government was to be a neutral referee between all parties,' said Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall, reporting from the capital Damascus. 'He praised the people of Suwayda, other than the few elements that wanted to sow trouble, saying that both Druze and Arab communities in the city were noble people.' It was unclear whether Syrian troops reached Suwayda city as of Saturday morning or were still on the city's outskirts, Vall said. Bedouin tribal fighters had been waiting to hear more from the government about the ceasefire, while Druze leaders have varying attitudes on it – some welcoming it, and others pledging to continue fighting, he added. Bedouin fighters in Damascus on Saturday were preparing to travel to the Druze-majority city to support Bedouin fighters there. On Friday, an Israeli official, who declined to be named, told reporters that in light of the 'ongoing instability in southwest Syria', Israel had agreed to allow the 'limited entry of the [Syrian] internal security forces into Suwayda district for the next 48 hours'. According to Syria's Health Ministry, the death toll from fighting in the Druze-majority city is now at least 260. An estimated 80,000 people have fled the area, according to the International Organization for Migration.
