Now Pimpri Chinchwad residents can reserve parking space on WhatsApp

Indian Express09-07-2025
In a significant step towards digital governance, PCMC on Tuesday launched its WhatsApp-based 'Pay and Park' facility during the civic standing committee meeting. The initiative, inaugurated by municipal commissioner Shekhar Singh, enables people to reserve parking spaces through WhatsApp without the need for paper tickets or manual processes.
Currently operational at 10 key locations in the city, the system allows real-time booking under the user's name for a specific time slot. If the vehicle isn't parked within the reserved time, the slot is automatically released and made available to others. Users receive instant notifications, making the process transparent and time-efficient, officials said.
The system offers seamless access to booking status, real-time availability, and smart alerts—all through WhatsApp, officials said.
According to joint city engineer for urban mobility Bapu Gaikwad, the service will not only ease parking hassles for citizens but also enhance overall traffic management in Pimpri Chinchwad.
The standing committee meeting was held at the Late Mayor Madhukar Pawale Hall at the Main Administrative Building in Pimpri. It was chaired by Shekhar Singh, and attended by additional commissioners Pradip Jambhale Patil, Vijaykumar Khorate, Trupti Sandbhor and key department heads among others.

US Lawmaker Presses Defense For Details On Microsoft's Chinese Engineers

San Francisco: A US lawmaker on Thursday pressed the US Defense Department for further details on what information the US military shared with Chinese engineers as part of a cloud computing services contract with Microsoft. After a report by investigative journalism publication ProPublica, Microsoft last week said it has ended the practice of using China-based engineers to provide technical support to the US military under the supervision of US "digital escorts" who may not have had the expertise to assess whether the work was a cybersecurity threat. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a two-week review to ensure other contractors were not employing the same practices. In a letter seen by Reuters, US Senator Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, asked Hegseth to provide details to lawmakers on what information Chinese engineers accessed and to disclose "the discovery of potential security incidents or malicious events that have already occurred or are likely to occur." In addition, Cotton asked whether Microsoft had been required to perform self-audits of the program and if so, the results of those audits. "While I applaud your actions, I am concerned that the Department (of Defense) is hampered by agreements and practices unwisely adopted by your predecessors, including contracts and oversight processes that fail to account for the growing Chinese threat," Cotton wrote in the letter.

Apple cites Supreme Court's birthright ruling in fight over Epic Games injunction

Apple is hoping a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling curbing the power of federal judges to issue nationwide orders will help the technology giant win an appeal in a lawsuit requiring it to revamp its lucrative App Store. In a court filing on Tuesday, Apple told the San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that the Supreme Court's June order in a case involving birthright citizenship bolsters the iPhone maker's arguments in a high-stakes standoff with "Fortnite" game developer Epic Games. The Supreme Court limited when judges can issue so-called universal injunctions that apply broadly, and not just to the parties in a lawsuit. The justices did not rule on whether the Trump administration can legally terminate the right to citizenship for people born on U.S. soil, but the decision was a win for the administration, which had complained about individual lower courts blocking its policies nationwide. Even though the case at the high court had nothing to do with Apple, its appeal could test the scope of the justices' ruling. Apple and Epic did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Apple in its appeal is challenging a U.S. district judge's order in April that said the company must open its App Store to more competition, allowing all developers - not just Epic - more freedom to steer consumers to alternative payment options outside of an app. The appeal also challenges the judge's finding that Apple was in contempt for violating a prior injunction in the same case. Epic Games sued Apple in 2020 to loosen its control over transactions in applications that use its iOS operating system and how apps are distributed to consumers. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in 2021 said Apple must allow developers to more easily steer consumers to potentially cheaper non-Apple payment options. Apple defied that court order to maintain a revenue stream worth billions of dollars, Gonzalez Rogers ruled in April. Apple has denied any wrongdoing, and defended its compliance with the court's orders. Apple told the 9th Circuit that, after the Supreme Court's birthright citizenship decision, judges no longer have freestanding authority to issue universal injunctions. Apple also noted that Epic pursued its lawsuit on its own, not as a class action on behalf of a larger group. Epic told the appeals court in May that Apple's App Store changes will have wide-reaching benefits for the industry and consumers. "The sky has not fallen. Instead, developers and consumers are finally beginning to see the long-awaited benefits of increased competition," Epic said. The case is Epic Games Inc v. Apple Inc, 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, No. 25-2935. Coromandel International posts 62 pc jump in Q1 profit on strong sales

New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) Coromandel International reported a 62.20 per cent jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 501.59 crore for the first quarter of 2025-26, driven by strong sales, the fertiliser company said on Thursday. Its net profit rose from Rs 309.24 crore in the year-ago period, according to a regulatory filing. The total revenue climbed 49 per cent to Rs 7,042.30 crore during the April-June quarter from Rs 4,728.83 crore a year earlier, while expenses rose to Rs 6,448.72 crore from Rs 4,345.74 crore. 'Coromandel made a strong beginning to the season, registering growth across the businesses, driven by procurement efficiencies, operational excellence and effective marketing initiatives," Managing Director and CEO S Sankarasubramanian said. Performance was aided by early monsoon onset that resulted in higher crop sowings and improved agricultural inputs consumption, he added. The board approved the acquisition of an additional 17.69 per cent stake in Baobab Mining and Chemicals Corporation SA, Senegal, through wholly-owned subsidiary Coromandel Chemicals Limited for USD 7.70 million. This will increase the stake to 71.51 per cent from 53.82 per cent. 'The acquisition of an additional stake in BMCC is a strategic move to further strengthen our backwards integration in the phosphates value chain," Sankarasubramanian said. The company's backwards integration projects for phosphoric and sulphuric acid plants at Kakinada are progressing well and are likely to be commissioned by the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025-26. Coromandel recently signed a long-term agreement with Saudi Arabia-based Maaden for securing DAP shipments to India and set up a joint venture with Sakarni Plaster to manufacture phospho gypsum-based green building materials.
