UAE coach Olaroiu shifts focus to crucial playoff preparation
Thursday's goalless draw with Uzbekistan ended UAE's hopes of automatic qualification and the West Asian side sit only a point ahead of Qatar, with both having sealed their places in the playoffs.
Cosmin Olaroiu would have known before the tie against Uzbekistan that automatic qualification was going to be a long shot but the newly appointed head coach saw positives in the match and is already preparing for the playoffs.
'You have a once in a lifetime chance,' Olaroiu said. 'I don't think you should talk about motivation as much as preparation. That is the most important thing. Now is the end of the season, we have a break, then the clubs will start their preparations.
'In September, there is (an international) break and we will have some friendly games. The preparation is very, very important because the work the clubs will do now will influence it.'
Kyrgyzstan, on the other hand, will be aiming to finish their debut campaign at this stage of the AFC Asian Qualifiers on a high note.

In a setback to the team ahead of the crucial match, the UAE Football Association has suspended defender Khalid Al Dhanhani and forward Sultan Adel for five domestic matches and fined each player Dhs500,000 on Sunday for misconduct during a national team training camp.
The players have left the camp with immediate effect due to a violation of disciplinary rules and will not travel with the squad to Kyrgyzstan.
'The disciplinary committee of the UAE Football Association (UAEFA) has decided to suspend Sharjah player Khalid Al Dhanhani and Shabab Al Ahli player Sultan Adil for five domestic matches, and to impose a fine of Dh500,000 on each,' the UAEFA said in a statement on Sunday.
'They have also been removed from the senior national team list after committing a violation inside the national team training camp on June 7.'
The clubs of the two players dismissed from the UAE national team have expressed their support for the Football Association's decision. While the specific nature of the 'violation' has not been disclosed, both players' clubs have backed the FA's actions.
'While the club reaffirms its full respect for the decisions and regulations of the UAE Football Association, it will proceed with the necessary disciplinary action against the player,' Sharjah club stated.

Head coach Herve Renard knows it's an extremely unlikely outcome for his Saudi team, but he's urging his players to go all in Tuesday in the last game of the third round of Asian qualifying for next year's global tournament.
'The door is closed but we have to try to qualify even if it is through the window,' Renard said after his team's 2-0 win over Bahrain last week kept Saudi Arabia in contention. 'Everything must go very well for us if we are to qualify; we have to score goals.'
Anything less than a five-goal deficit means Australia — in second spot in Group C — will qualify for a seventh World Cup.
The last time the Socceroos lost by such a margin was in successive 6-0 defeats against Brazil and France in 2013. The Australians have scored 14 goals and conceded six through nine qualifiers.
After successive World Cup qualifications through the playoffs, Australia are close to securing a direct route but coach Tony Popovic is taking nothing for granted.
'We need to do a job in Saudi,' Popovic said. 'We're in a great position, but we need to finish it off.'
Popovic has only been in the job since September, stepping in after Graham Arnold resigned after collecting just one point in the group's first two qualification games.
'It's been a really intense period since I've come in but everyone's embraced what we're aiming to do,' he said. 'And we're very close now to achieving our goal.'For China, Kuwait, North Korea, Kyrgyzstan and Bahrain, the run to 2026 is already over.
UAE players take part in a training session in Bishkek on Monday, ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr set for Goa trip while UAE and Saudi clubs to face off in AFC Champions League
Paulo Sousa has been handed a challenging start in his bid to add continental glory to the domestic dominance of his first season in UAE football with Shabab Al Ahli. The UAE Pro League winners will have away trips to each of the Jeddah giants in the league phase of the AFC Champions League Elite, starting on September 15. Meanwhile, in the Asian Champions League 2, the second tier AFC competition, Cristiano Ronaldo and Al Nassr were given an eclectic set of fixtures - including a trip to India to take on FC Goa - in Friday's draw in Kuala Lumpur. The opening round of the Elite competition involves two groups of 12 teams, one for the east zone and one for the west. Each team will play eight matches, and, during the draw, the three UAE sides were each given three games against the all-star sides of the Saudi Pro League. Shabab Al Ahli will start out against Al Ahli Saudi, the side who claimed the Champions League title in formidable style in their home stadium in Jeddah in May. They will also travel to play Ahli's city rivals, Al Ittihad, who won the Saudi Pro League title with the likes of Karim Benzema, Ngolo Kante and Fabinho in their ranks. They will face all three of the Saudi Arabian clubs, with Darwin Nunez and his Al Hilal side set to travel from Riyadh to Dubai to play them. Shabab Al Ahli have never won one of Asia's top titles, but they were runners up – in their previous guise of Al Ahli – in 2015. Under the guidance of Portuguese coach Sousa, Shabab Al Ahli swept all before them in domestic football last season. Coincidentally, it was a UAE club who thwarted their bid to add a continental honour to their league and cup double. Sharjah beat them in the quarter-final of the AFC Champions League Two. Sharjah also qualified for the main event this season, and they will also be faced with away trips to both the Jeddah giants, while hosting Hilal. The third UAE club involved are Al Wahda. The Abu Dhabi club, who have brought in playmaker Dusan Tadic ahead of the new campaign, face the inverse of their compatriots. They will host the two Jeddah clubs, but will travel to Riyadh to face the Simone Inzaghi-coached Hilal side. Ronaldo and Nassr head to Goa The draw for the Champions League Two was dominated by the presence of one club in particular: Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr. The SPL side have been drawn in a group with Al Zarwaa of Iraq, India's FC Goa, and Istiklol Dushanbe of Tajikistan. It has been suggested that the Riyadh giants could field second string sides for their fixtures in the competition, in order to aid their SPL title challenge. However, the prospect of stars of the world game like Ronaldo, Joao Felix and Sadio Mane lining up in front of a frenzied crowd in Goa, in particular, is a captivating one. The Champions League Two trophy is currently in UAE hands. Sharjah became the second UAE side to win a continental title, after two-time elite winners Al Ain, when they beat Lion City Sailors in Singapore in May. They will not defend their crown, though, having won their place in the Elite tournament. Instead, Al Wasl will carry UAE hopes in the second-tier competition. The Dubai side have been drawn in a group with Esteghlal of Iran, Al Muharraq of Bahrain, and Jordan's Al Wehdat.

Paulo Sousa's Shabab Al Ahli the team to catch: UAE Pro League season preview
The domestic league season will get under way amid challenging temperatures this weekend when the UAE Pro League returns. The rest of the field have been working in the summer to find a way to bridge the gap to Shabab Al Ahli, who won the league by a massive 12-point margin last term. Sousa sets the standard Paulo Sousa has packed a lot into his management career. Since getting his first senior team job with Queens Park Rangers in 2008, the former Portugal midfielder has coached 13 different teams in 10 different countries. The longest stint he has had anywhere has been the two years he spent at Fiorentina between 2015 and 2017. As such, it would have been no surprise if he had signed off straight after one glorious season in the UAE. Instead, he is still in situ at Shabab Al Ahli, where he is looking to reprise one of the most successful seasons ever in the country. Fuelled by the excellence of Iran forward Sardar Azmoun, the Dubai-based club won a league and cup double, and only lost out in the final of another domestic cup. Repeating that success will be tough, as recent history shows. Milojevic's move Shabab Al Ahli's league and President's Cup double was fantastic, but not exactly unprecedented: their Dubai rivals, Al Wasl, had done exactly that the previous season. Milos Milojevic became the darling of the Ultras Junoon, Wasl's supporters, in coaching them to that success. The Serbian coach found the going tougher second time round as they tried to defend their titles. They were some way off the standards set the previous season, but they did at least reach the knockout stage of the AFC Champions League for the first time. That was enough for Milojevic, though. Having said he was ready for a move – while flippantly expressing his desire to manage Real Madrid one day – he made the short switch to Sharjah. He has big boots to fill. The role was vacated by Cosmin Olaroiu, who is now the UAE national team coach, having led them to the AFC Champions League Two title before signing off. Britons abroad Mackenzie Hunt was conspicuous by his absence in the first UAE squad named by Olaroiu back at the start of June. The Liverpool-born, Dubai-raised player had been a fixture in the national team squads of Olaroiu's predecessor, Paulo Bento, until he was jettisoned as manager. Playing down the leagues in the UK with Fleetwood Town meant Hunt could be out of sight, out of mind, and therefore easy to be overlooked. He has shown his desire to battle for a place in the national team, though, having made a summer switch to the Pro League. The former Dubai English Speaking School pupil has joined Baniyas. He is not the only English-origin player at the Abu Dhabi-based club, who are looking to improve on their 12th-placed finish – one above relegation – last season. Brad Young, a striker who is a product of Aston Villa, has also arrived from Saudi Arabian club Al Oroboh. Transfer merry-go-round Fair to say, UAE football is not where the majority of attention is trained when it comes to Middle East transfer business. The Saudi Pro League continues to dominate, and not just the region. Even at the top European clubs, whenever any major name is eyeing a transfer, their agents often insinuate a Saudi Arabian club into the conversation, just to up the rate. Even newcomers to the big time, like Al Qadsiah and Neom, have spent around $100 million in transfer fees alone this summer. While the likes of Darwin Nunez and Joao Felix have arrived in Riyadh over the summer, with Kingsley Coman potentially next, UAE clubs have had to be more creative. Al Jazira have spent the most, in bringing in Willyan Rocha from Russia and Igor Serrote from Brazil, but their Abu Dhabi rivals Al Wahda have made perhaps the most intriguing purchase. They have landed Dusan Tadic, the Serbian playmaker who excelled at Southampton, Ajax and, most recently, Fenerbahce. Al Ain need a spark The fact Al Ain are not the first name in the conversation about title challengers feels remarkable. The Garden City club are the most successful in UAE football history. They won the AFC Champions League 14 months ago. And they represented the country at the revamped Club World Cup in the United States this summer. Unfortunately, all the latter did was show up their failings. They were whacked 5-0 by a Juventus side who had just been to the White House to meet President Trump, then 6-0 by Manchester City. Maybe the results were understandable given the standard of opposition. But Al Ain's problems have been deep seated for some time, and they have their work cut out to turn it around. That being said, they still have an enviable squad, with match-winners everywhere, so it would be foolhardy to count them out.
