Oleksandr Usyk could be stripped of world title within weeks of Daniel Dubois KO

Daily Mirror24-07-2025
Just days after his devastating win over Daniel Dubois, Usyk has been ordered by a major boxing governing body to defend one of his heavyweight titles
Oleksandr Usyk has been ordered to defend his WBO heavyweight title against Joseph Parker - or risks losing the coveted strap.

The Ukrainian became an undisputed heavyweight champion for a second time after he brutally knocked out Daniel Dubois in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium last weekend. Usyk controlled the fight from start to finish. While 'Triple D' had moments in the showdown, the 'Cat' quickly wrapped up proceedings in the fifth.

Usyk sent the Brit crashing to the canvas with a stinging right hand. Much to the surprise of many, Dubois beat the count, but was knocked out seconds later as the Ukrainian detonated a pinpoint left hand. After scoring his second win over the Brit, Usyk has been sent a rather stern warning by the WBO.

The governing body has ordered the two-division undisputed champion to defend the aforementioned belt against Parker. In a letter sent to the pair, the WBO wrote: "Gentlemen: Please be advised that the WBO World Championship Committee is hereby ordering the commencement of negotiations between the subject matter fighters to discharge the mandatory title defence obligation.
"By virtue of this order, the parties have thirty (30) days upon issuance of this letter to reach terms. Failure to do so will result in this committee ordering purse bid proceedings in accordance with WBO regulations of World Championship Contests. The minimum bid in the Heavyweight division is one-million dollars ($1,000,000.00). Any of the parties herein may request purse bid proceedings at any time during negotiation stages.
"Lastly, the WBO reserves its right to issue any and all further rulings deemed necessary, helpful and convenient to accomplish the purposes, policies, and intent of the WBO rules, including but not limited to serving those interests that best serve boxing, and the WBO Heavyweight Division. Do not hesitate to contact the WBO headquarters if you have any questions or concerns." If Usyk opts not to face Parker, he will have to relinquish his WBO belt - or be stripped of it.
Immediately after Saturday night's showdown, boxing promoter Frank Warren revealed he would like to see Usyk face Parker next, but also confirmed Tyson Fury has asked for a third fight against the Ukrainian. Asked what fight he would like to see next for Usyk, Warren told his post-fight news conference: "His [Usyk's] first defence of his title is the WBO belt and that will be against Joe Parker. So that again would be a great fight.
"I mean I would like to see the Joe Parker fight. Joe deserves it. He's on a run himself, same as Daniel was on, and that's the fight that's been ordered. So one way or another it will happen, or Joe will fight for the vacant title. Tyson has made it very clear to me; he'd love that [Usyk] fight, he would love to do that fight and it'd be a big fight."
Kiwi Parker is on a stunning run of form that has seen him beat Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole. Parker's trainer, Andy Lee, recently revealed that Parker is capable of pulling off the upset if he gets a crack at the Ukrainian and has even stated what he has been working on with him in the gym to prepare him for Usyk.

'What we work on in the gym is being ready at all times and body language in the ring, and keeping your feet in a position where you're always ready to punch,' Lee said on the Ariel x Ade Show. 'If you are resting and you are taking a break, you don't show it. You look as if you are ready to attack and you're ready to punch. That's basically what we do and that's what Usyk does.
'Usyk feeds off his opponent's breaks. When they look to take that little switch, he'll attack them. He can pressure, pressure, pressure, feint with his magic wand right hand and he just burns them up. They are mentally exhausted as much as physically. And then when he wants to rest, he can move and dip and dive under the big guys' punches.'
When is Oleksandr Usyk's next fight?
It seems as if Usyk will take the rest of the year off to recover and spend time with his family before he contemplates a return to the ring. Speaking about his age after the Dubois showdown, Usyk said: "38 is a young guy, remember! 38 is only the start!
"I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and Wembley, thank you so much! It's for the people. Nothing is next. It's enough, next, I don't know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now. Two or three months, I want to just rest." He added: 'Maybe it's Tyson Fury,' Usyk added. 'Maybe we have three choices, Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker. Listen, I cannot now say because I want to go back home."

'I'm the only fighter to face Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez - here's my prediction'

Both Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will settle their rivalry next month - and a former opponent of both fighters has weighed in on the clash Amir Khan - the only man to have fought both Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez - has given his prediction for the upcoming clash. ‌ Both Alvarez and Crawford are set to go head-to-head in a mouthwatering showdown in Las Vegas on September 13th at the Allegiant Stadium. 'Saul' will defend the undisputed super-middleweight titles against Crawford - who has already claimed the undisputed prize at both super-lightweight and welterweight. ‌ With Crawford moving up two weight classes for the dust-up, fans are intrigued to see how 'Bud' will fare in yet another division. One man who is backing the smaller man to shock the world is Khan. The British boxing legend famously fought the American back in 2019. Khan lost to Crawford by TKO in sixth round after his corner threw in the towel following an accidental low blow. ‌ Three years prior to the showdown with 'Bud,' Khan took on Alvarez and was brutally knocked out by the Mexican in the sixth round in Las Vegas. Sharing his views on the upcoming showdown, the Brit told The Ring: "There are weights for a reason in boxing. I have huge respect for Crawford for showing the balls and fighting a beast like Canelo. "Maybe Crawford is seeing something in Canelo that others are not seeing, and that he is past his sell-by date. And maybe Crawford is the guy to catch him at the right time. Let's see, I think it's a brilliant fight. I'm going to support my boy, Terence Crawford. He's a good friend of mine. I think he can do it. He has a great boxing IQ, his IQ is perfect and he can see everything. 'Crawford does hit hard. A lot of people don't give Crawford the credit for the punch power he has. I've been in the ring with him, he's hit me hard. Obviously the most powerful fight between the two is going to be Canelo, but I think Crawford still has enough power to hurt Canelo and push him back, and that he is there in front of him as a challenge." Throughout his professional career so far, there aren't many fighters who have really test 'Saul.' Back in 2014, Erislandy Lara gave the Mexican one of the hardest fights of his career - which the Mexican won via split decision. Lara used his movement well to get Alvarez to hesitate. Lara believes Crawford has to use his legs well and move in and out of range. Speaking to FightHype, the 42-year-old WBA middleweight champion said: "I see it as an interesting 50-50 fight. I feel that Canelo is very strong right now, and I want to see how Crawford handles the power, especially in the early rounds, and what's going to happen." Headded: "I remember fighting Canelo 14 years (11 years) ago. I remember, I used my legs real good. As long as Crawford uses his legs and doesn't let Canelo hit him in the arms and beat him up on the arms, he has a very good chance of winning." When is Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford? The 12-round super-middleweight title fight will take place on Saturday, September 13. The fight will take place in front of over 65,000 fans at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. While the official fight times are yet to be released, expect the undercard to get underway at around midnight in the UK. It is likely that the main event ringwalks will begin at around 4am UK time. All of the action will be streamed live on Netflix - their third venture into the world of boxing - in both the UK and the US.

The Blues have been on another big spending spree this summer, with £60million Joao Pedro among a number of signings that have swollen the current first-team squad to an incredible 47 players. Stamford Bridge chiefs are close to selling striker Armando Broja and midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu - two of the players who do not appear on the website - to Burnley. But in addition to Academy graduates Broja and Alfie Gilchrist, there are seven players including Ugochukwu who cost Chelsea a combined total of more than £200m who have no profile on the website - despite still officially being at the club. Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, who is facing a ban for failings a drugs test, DOES still have a profile pic - albeit wearing last season's kit. Add in the six players already sent out on loan, and the Blues have a huge number of players - and agents - to juggle. Of the Chelsea players who went out on loan last season, Renato Veiga probably did the most to enhance his value, during a six-month spell at Juventus. But the Portugal international, whose proposed big money move to Atletico Madrid appears to have collapsed, did not do enough to earn a spot on the Blues' website. Toto Wolff provides George Russell contract update as Mercedes star jets off on holiday

Formula 1 has reached its mid-season summer break and George Russell has yet to put pen to paper on a new Mercedes contact with his current deal expiring in December Toto Wolff believes George Russell will "definitely" be a Mercedes driver in 2026. The Brit's current contract expires at the end of the year, but a renewal has been highly likely ever since Max Verstappen confirmed that he intends to stick with Red Bull next year. ‌ Mercedes boss Wolff had been eyeing up an ambitious move to convince the Dutchman to quit for the Silver Arrows. And the most likely of his current drivers to be replaced in such a scenario was Russell despite the 27-year-old's superb season so far. ‌ He remains the only driver other than Max Verstappen and the dominant McLaren pair to win a race, courtesy of his Canada victory in June. And his third place in Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix was his sixth visit to the podium in 2025. ‌ Speaking after that impressive performance in Budapest, Wolff said of Russell's contract situation: "Definitely, he is staying. The team is strong and he has shown it again today." Both Mercedes drivers are products of the team's efforts to develop talented youngsters into stars. His team-mate is Kimi Antonelli who has endured a difficult debut season in F1 at times, having been fast-tracked into the sport as a raw 18-year-old, but who has already shown glimpses of what he can do. A maiden podium was secured on that red-letter day in Canada for the team, and that came a month after his first pole position for the Sprint race in Miami. But it is Russell who has led Mercedes forward this year, the Brit fourth in the drivers' championship and now only 15 points behind Verstappen ahead. "George has always had good cards, because he has delivered since 2018," said Wolff of negotiations with his driver. "There was not a season he was not there, and nothing changed that in our thinking for next year. 'So, just because you do not talk outside, it does not mean that things are not progressing in your relationship internally. And when it comes to his contract, let's see. We will come out and say what kind of term we have put forward." "I have waited so long, and I think now I want to get through this weekend," he said before the race in Budapest. "I want to go on a holiday next week and enjoy the break. There is no time pressure my side, there is no time pressure from the team's side. So whenever we come to an agreement, we will get it done. But it has got to be right both ways."
