Oleksandr Usyk could be stripped of world title within weeks of Daniel Dubois KO

Daily Mirror24-07-2025
Just days after his devastating win over Daniel Dubois, Usyk has been ordered by a major boxing governing body to defend one of his heavyweight titles
Oleksandr Usyk has been ordered to defend his WBO heavyweight title against Joseph Parker - or risks losing the coveted strap.

The Ukrainian became an undisputed heavyweight champion for a second time after he brutally knocked out Daniel Dubois in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium last weekend. Usyk controlled the fight from start to finish. While 'Triple D' had moments in the showdown, the 'Cat' quickly wrapped up proceedings in the fifth.

Usyk sent the Brit crashing to the canvas with a stinging right hand. Much to the surprise of many, Dubois beat the count, but was knocked out seconds later as the Ukrainian detonated a pinpoint left hand. After scoring his second win over the Brit, Usyk has been sent a rather stern warning by the WBO.

The governing body has ordered the two-division undisputed champion to defend the aforementioned belt against Parker. In a letter sent to the pair, the WBO wrote: "Gentlemen: Please be advised that the WBO World Championship Committee is hereby ordering the commencement of negotiations between the subject matter fighters to discharge the mandatory title defence obligation.
"By virtue of this order, the parties have thirty (30) days upon issuance of this letter to reach terms. Failure to do so will result in this committee ordering purse bid proceedings in accordance with WBO regulations of World Championship Contests. The minimum bid in the Heavyweight division is one-million dollars ($1,000,000.00). Any of the parties herein may request purse bid proceedings at any time during negotiation stages.
"Lastly, the WBO reserves its right to issue any and all further rulings deemed necessary, helpful and convenient to accomplish the purposes, policies, and intent of the WBO rules, including but not limited to serving those interests that best serve boxing, and the WBO Heavyweight Division. Do not hesitate to contact the WBO headquarters if you have any questions or concerns." If Usyk opts not to face Parker, he will have to relinquish his WBO belt - or be stripped of it.
Immediately after Saturday night's showdown, boxing promoter Frank Warren revealed he would like to see Usyk face Parker next, but also confirmed Tyson Fury has asked for a third fight against the Ukrainian. Asked what fight he would like to see next for Usyk, Warren told his post-fight news conference: "His [Usyk's] first defence of his title is the WBO belt and that will be against Joe Parker. So that again would be a great fight.
"I mean I would like to see the Joe Parker fight. Joe deserves it. He's on a run himself, same as Daniel was on, and that's the fight that's been ordered. So one way or another it will happen, or Joe will fight for the vacant title. Tyson has made it very clear to me; he'd love that [Usyk] fight, he would love to do that fight and it'd be a big fight."
Kiwi Parker is on a stunning run of form that has seen him beat Deontay Wilder, Zhilei Zhang and Martin Bakole. Parker's trainer, Andy Lee, recently revealed that Parker is capable of pulling off the upset if he gets a crack at the Ukrainian and has even stated what he has been working on with him in the gym to prepare him for Usyk.

'What we work on in the gym is being ready at all times and body language in the ring, and keeping your feet in a position where you're always ready to punch,' Lee said on the Ariel x Ade Show. 'If you are resting and you are taking a break, you don't show it. You look as if you are ready to attack and you're ready to punch. That's basically what we do and that's what Usyk does.
'Usyk feeds off his opponent's breaks. When they look to take that little switch, he'll attack them. He can pressure, pressure, pressure, feint with his magic wand right hand and he just burns them up. They are mentally exhausted as much as physically. And then when he wants to rest, he can move and dip and dive under the big guys' punches.'
When is Oleksandr Usyk's next fight?
It seems as if Usyk will take the rest of the year off to recover and spend time with his family before he contemplates a return to the ring. Speaking about his age after the Dubois showdown, Usyk said: "38 is a young guy, remember! 38 is only the start!
"I want to say thank you to Jesus Christ. I want to say thank you to my team and Wembley, thank you so much! It's for the people. Nothing is next. It's enough, next, I don't know. I want to rest. My family, my wife, my children, I want to rest now. Two or three months, I want to just rest." He added: 'Maybe it's Tyson Fury,' Usyk added. 'Maybe we have three choices, Derek Chisora and Anthony Joshua. Maybe Joseph Parker. Listen, I cannot now say because I want to go back home."

George Russell comes clean on retirement plan and private conversation with Novak Djokovic

George Russell has been given a pro tip by Novak Djokovic on how he can fulfil his dream of racing in Formula One for another 15 years and becoming a world champion George Russell has revealed he plans to race in Formula One well into his forties, just like Fernando Alonso. The Mercedes star opened up about what he's doing now to ensure his longevity in the sport after getting some private advice from Novak Djokovic. ‌ Russell, who has been racing in F1 since 2017, emerged as a bright talent at Williams before stepping up to Mercedes in 2022. The Brit, 27, managed to soak up knowledge from seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton over a three-year stint as his team-mate, even finishing above him in the drivers' standings twice. ‌ Now the lead driver for the Silver Arrows, Russell is having his most consistent season yet, despite the W16's pace lagging behind some of its rivals. But with just four race wins under his belt and no world championships yet, he's still chasing his maiden title, while younger rivals like Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri could clinch theirs this year. ‌ When asked by TV personality Spencer Matthews on the UNTAPPED podcast whether he can see himself becoming a world champion, Russell responded: 'For sure, I don't know when it's going to come.' He went on to shed light on his meeting with record 24-time Grand Slam winner Djokovic at last year's Wimbledon before revealing his plan to retire in his 40s. 'I had a really good conversation with Novak Djokovic about human performance and what he's doing currently, but what he was also doing in his 20s. He said to me that in his 20s, he felt he could comfortably miss a day at the gym and it wouldn't affect him,' Russell said. 'But he didn't, and he's so grateful for that now because he thinks the work he put in during those years is allowing him to continue playing at such a high level into his late 30s. Formula One isn't as brutal on the body as tennis in terms of constant impact on your legs. 'But I want to be here well into my 40s, and when I see what Fernando Alonso's doing, that gives me inspiration that I can do that. ‌ "Someone told me this morning that Michael Schumacher won his first title at Ferrari when he was 32 years old. You usually think of Ferrari and Schumacher as utter domination. That's what I need to tell myself to stay motivated.' In recent months, there has been growing speculation that Russell could be replaced by his bitter rival, four-time world champion Max Verstappen, after Mercedes boss Toto Wolff was reported to be interested in poaching the Dutchman. However, with Verstappen committed to Red Bull for the 2026 season, Russell's position seems secure for the foreseeable future. The Brit has already been confirmed by Wolff as Mercedes' main man for next year, having done a solid job as the lead driver since Lewis Hamilton's departure. 'Definitely, he's staying,' the Austrian said in Hungary. 'The team is strong. He has shown it today again.' Russell clinched Mercedes' first victory of the season in Canada and has outscored his team-mate Kimi Antonelli 187 points to 64 just past the midway stage of the season, while securing five further podium finishes.

Tyson Fury's huge net worth as Morecambe face going out of business

Tyson Fury has pocketed some life-changing paydays over the last few years - with fans now calling for him to step up and save Morecambe FC Tyson Fury 's private company has assets of over £160million but the ex-world champion appears in no rush to come to the rescue of Morecambe football club. ‌ In June, it was reported that the former two-time heavyweight champion is making £218,000-a-day in profits. Newly-filed accounts revealed Tyson Fury Limited reported a £79million profit between September 2023 and last September. Fury's net-worth is almost double the £82million held in the business the previous year. ‌ Fury, 36, is the sole director of the company and lists his profession as 'professional boxer'. The accounts show a £100,000 dividend paid to the 'Gypsy King', £50,000 less than he paid himself the previous year. The boxing legend set up his company back in 2013 and the twelve-month period of the accounts predate his retirement following his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk. However, it does include his loss to the Ukrainian last May. ‌ The heavyweight giants shared a staggering £150 million for the December fight in Saudi Arabia - which Fury lost on points. With the accounts pre-dating the sequel defeat, it is likely that the Brit's worth has only soared over the last few months. After announcing his retirement earlier this year, Fury has been enjoying life in his beloved town of Morecambe - with his wife Paris and their seven kids. A proud member of the closely-knit community, fans have for Fury to come to the rescue after the local football club were handed major sanctions after failing to meet their financial obligations for the upcoming campaign. The 105-year-old outfit dropped into the National League last season and it was recently announced their first three National League fixtures against Boston, Brackley and Scunthorpe have all be postponed. "It was decided further sanctions must be imposed, with the club's membership to be suspended with immediate effect," the National League recently said in a statement. "The committee will meet again on Wednesday, August 20 to determine if outstanding items have been satisfied, and to decide the club's ability to retain membership in the competition." With the Shrimps now just days away from going out of business, fans are pleading for Fury to step in - after previously claiming he would purchase the club. One fan took to social media to say: "Tyson Fury watching Morecambe... go bust while training at his gym from the ground daily is genuinely mental. Save your local club!" The 'Gypsy King' first expressed his interest in his hometown team back in 2022 after the club were put on the market by Bond Group Investments. "I'm thinking about buying Morecambe Football Club, they're in League One at the moment," he told talkSPORT. ‌ "So I was thinking I invest X amount of millions in them. Basically throw it at them and keep them going up. I've been offered to buy Morecambe Football Club. I own all the training facilities anyway and the training gym. So who knows? You might be looking at a football club owner." The Tyson Fury Foundation is located in the north-east corner of the club's stadium, the Mazuma Mobile Stadium. The building also contains a gym within premises that is owned by the former two-time heavyweight champion. When is Tyson Fury's next fight? Last month, it was revealed that Fury will be making a stunning comeback to the ring. Not only that, the Brit even revealed a third date with Usyk had been confirmed. The trilogy showdown is believed to be set for 18 April 2026 at Wembley Stadium. The 36-year-old shared a fight poster featuring him and the Ukrainian on Instagram, captioning it: "April 18, 2026 Wembley Stadium. The trilogy! UK. contact @spencerbrownmrgoldstar for tickets." However, the Brit recently claimed he will "never" fight again, just weeks after it was announced that he was planning to return to the ring. When asked when he plans to fight again, Fury told Sky Sports: "Never. Really! Too old, look at my beard, all grey. Boxing's a young man's game."
