Compact detector unlocks reactor's neutrino mystery with first-ever detection
The results were achieved using the CONUS+ experiment and provide an observation of Coherent Elastic Neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEvNS) from a reactor source at full coherence.
'The CEvNS measurement provides unique insights into fundamental physical processes within the Standard Model of particle physics, the current theory describing the structure of our universe,' said the researchers in a press release.
Neutrinos do not scatter off
The experiment is situated 20.7 meters from the core of the Leibstadt nuclear power plant in Switzerland. It uses three 1 kg (2.2 lbs) germanium semiconductor detectors to identify CEvNS, a process where a low-energy neutrino interacts with an entire atomic nucleus.
'In this process, neutrinos do not scatter off the individual components of the atomic nuclei in the detector, but rather coherently with the entire nucleus. This significantly increases the probability of a very small but observable nuclear recoil,' explained the press release.
The process can be compared to a ping-pong ball hitting a car; the recoil of the car, though small, is the observable effect. In this case, antineutrinos from the reactor scattered off germanium nuclei in the detectors.
Over a measurement period of 119 days between 2023 and 2024, the team recorded an excess of 395±106 neutrino signals after subtracting background and interfering signals. The position of the detector receives a flux of more than 1013 (ten trillion) neutrinos per square centimeter per second from the reactor.
"This value is in very good agreement with theoretical calculations, within the measurement uncertainty," remarked the press release.
"We have thus successfully confirmed the sensitivity of the CONUS+ experiment and its ability to detect antineutrino scattering from atomic nuclei," added Dr. Christian Buck, an author of the study.
Neutrino detection requires large experiments
Neutrinos are elementary particles that interact weakly with matter, and their detection has typically required very large experiments. The CEvNS effect was theorized in 1974 and first observed by the COHERENT experiment at a particle accelerator in 2017. The CONUS+ result is the first observation of the effect from a reactor at these low energies.
The CEvNS technique may have future applications. Dr. Buck noted the potential to develop small, mobile neutrino detectors to monitor reactor heat output or isotope concentration.
The measurement also provides data for testing the Standard Model of particle physics. According to the authors, the CONUS+ measurements have a reduced dependence on nuclear physics aspects compared to other experiments, improving the sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model.
"The techniques and methods used in CONUS+ have excellent potential for fundamental new discoveries," concluded Professor Manfred Lindner, the project's initiator.
"The groundbreaking CONUS+ results could therefore mark the starting point for a new field in neutrino research."
The experiment was equipped with improved and larger detectors in autumn 2024, with the aim of increasing measurement accuracy.

These Markers May Predict Risk for Bone Loss in SLE
TOPLINE: Osteoporosis was prevalent in 41% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Factors such as lupus nephritis classes III and IV, U1-ribonucleoprotein (RNP) antibodies, and longer disease duration were associated with lower areal bone mineral density (BMD), and active lupus nephritis was associated with osteoporosis. METHODOLOGY: Researchers analysed data of a subcohort of patients from a prospective observational study to identify factors associated with BMD and the risk for osteoporosis. They included 110 patients with SLE (mean age, 48 years; 92% women) from a hospital in Berlin between July 2015 and January 2022 who fulfilled the American College of Rheumatology/ European League Against Rheumatism 2019 SLE classification criteria and had current or prior glucocorticoid treatment. The analysis included SLE disease activity and a standardised bone health assessment with the DEXA scan and trabecular bone score measurement according to national guidelines. BMD- and osteoporosis-related factors were assessed. New KPIs May Cut Post-Endoscopy GI Cancer Risk
TOPLINE: A consensus on major and minor key performance indicators (KPIs) was established to improve the quality of upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy and reduce post-endoscopy upper GI cancer. The adoption of the proposed recommendations could minimise the threefold variation in post-endoscopy cancer rates among providers in England. METHODOLOGY: Researchers identified potential KPIs from the systematic review (up to December 2021), National Cancer Registry and Hospital Episode Statistics Database Analysis, and National Endoscopy Database Analysis. The cancer registry analysis included the data of 98,801 patients diagnosed with upper GI cancer within 3 years of a cancer-negative endoscopy in England between 2009 and 2018. Researchers used the modified nominal group technique through two online workshops moderated by James Lind Alliance facilitators. Overall, this study included 14 clinicians, three nurse endoscopists, two upper GI cancer nurse specialists, 14 patients and their relatives and representatives, and four observers. KPIs were categorised as endoscopy provider or endoscopist/procedure related. The ranking of KPIs was based on their relative importance in reducing post-endoscopy upper GI cancer, where the top 10 with lower scores were designated as major indicators and the remaining ones minor. TAKEAWAY: Four major provider-related KPIs were identified, of which the monitoring of post-endoscopy upper GI cancer rates with minimum standards of 7% or less and maintaining less intense endoscopy lists with less than 10 points per list were ranked the highest. Plastic pollution is a "grave, growing and under-recognized danger" to health that is costing the world at least $1.5 trillion a year, a report published Monday in the Lancet medical journal said. The new review of existing evidence, which was carried out by leading health researchers and doctors, was published one day ahead of fresh talks in Geneva aiming at getting the world's first treaty on plastic pollution. The experts called for the delegates from nearly 180 nations expected to attend the gathering to finally agree on a treaty after previous failed attempts. Comparing plastic to air and lead pollution, the report said the impact on health of plastic pollution could be mitigated by laws and policies. "Plastics cause disease and death from infancy to old age and are responsible for health-related economic losses exceeding $1.5 trillion annually," it said. A recent umbrella review of epidemiological research on the health impacts of plastic chemicals showed "consistent evidence for multiple health effects at all stages of human life for many plastic chemicals" and found that infants and young children were especially at risk, the report said. "These effects include impaired reproductive potential (eg, polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis), perinatal effects (eg, miscarriage, reduced birthweight, and malformations of the genital organs), diminished cognitive function (eg, intelligence quotient loss), insulin resistance, hypertension and obesity in children, and type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, and cancer in adults."
