Should you still squash spotted lanternflies? Here's what to know

Scientists and lawmakers alike are looking for ways to combat these invasive insects. But do they still present the same environmental harm as we originally thought? Late summer is that notorious time of year when spotted lanternflies transform from inconspicuous, polka-dotted nymphs to big, bumblebee-sized insects clinging to tree trunks and fluttering through the air.
These non-native insects in the planthopper family were accidentally introduced to the U.S. in 2014—possibly on an international shipment bound for Berks County in eastern Pennsylvania.
While harmless to humans—and actually rather beautiful to behold, thanks to their crimson and yellow markings—the bugs feed on over 70 different kinds of plants and trees in the U.S. alone, making them an invasive species. They have a taste for certain plants, namely tree of heaven—also an invasive species from Asia—as well as native species, such as black walnut, several species of maple, hops, and grapevines.
The threat posed to American agriculture is why a bipartisan group of lawmakers recently introduced a bill called the Spotted Lanternfly Research and Development Act, which would make competitive grants available for research projects related to the mitigation of the invasive species.
"Across our community, I hear time and again about how devastating these pests can be,' says Pennsylvania Representative Chrissy Houlahan in a press release. 'Whether you're a farmer, a homeowner, or just someone who enjoys the delicious produce grown by our community's farmers, the invasive Spotted Lanternfly poses a serious problem.'

While lanternflies don't appear to kill most trees outright, as was initially feared, large aggregations can affect plant health.
As true bugs in the order Hemiptera, spotted lanternflies suck nutrients out of host plants with mouthparts that act like a hypodermic needle.

Worst of all, the spotted lanternfly is a skilled hitchhiker, able to cling to surfaces that travel at high speeds, such as cars and trains. Their putty-like egg masses, each of which contain between 30 to 50 eggs, can survive months of extreme weather and cold on a variety of surfaces, such as tree bark or the side of a shipping container. Since arriving in the U.S., spotted lanternflies have exploded in number and can now be found from Massachusetts and Virginia to Illinois and Tennessee. Unfortunately, the insects arrived in a new location last year—one long feared by those in the wine industry.
'We've always told the growers in the Finger Lakes, it's not a matter of if they get here. It's when they'll get here,' says Hans Walter-Peterson, a viticulture specialist for Cornell University's Cooperative Extension.

When too many lanternflies siphon nutrients from a grapevine, they can reduce fruit yields, affect fruit quality, and even kill the host plant. They can also transmit nasty pathogens to those plants, such as black sooty mold.
Because of these factors, researchers in one study estimated that in Pennsylvania alone, spotted lanternflies could lead to an economic loss of $554 million annually and almost 5,000 jobs. Can we eradicate spotted lanternflies completely?
While people in parts of the Northeast and Midwest are already well aware of the insects, and some have even been smashing them on sight—as many local governments and scientists have suggested—vigilante bug hunters won't be enough to curb the spread, experts say.
Fortunately, however, there's evidence that native predators are starting to get a taste for the foreign insect. In lab tests, spined soldier bugs and Carolina mantises have proven to be effective lanternfly predators, and blue jays, cardinals, chickens, spiders, yellowjackets, and ants have all been observed eating lanternflies out in the wild.
Lanternfly-sniffing dogs are also emerging as a promising new avenue in the effort to prevent these spotted insects from popping up in new places. Just as canines have been trained to sniff out explosives, drugs, and even viruses like COVID-19, the animals may also be a critical tool in the fight against invasive species.

'Pretty much everything has a smell,' says Sally Dickinson, a doctoral candidate at Virginia Tech.
And that goes for spotted lanternfly egg masses, which the insects produce in the fall and secrete in out-of-the-way hiding spots. In nature, that might mean the underside of a branch, but in human-dominated environments, that includes metal or plastic, like a railroad car, just as well as wood.
Other researchers are working on new pesticide formulations and application methods, but so far, no one has landed on a silver bullet solution to the lanternfly problem. That's why funding new science on eradication is so critical.
'This invasive pest inflicts severe damage, threatening not only our crops but the livelihoods of hardworking farmers and the very future of our agricultural communities,' says New York Congressman Langworthy in the press release. 'This crisis can no longer be ignored.'

Every day, we're faced with constant opportunities for stimulation. With 24/7 access to news feeds, emails and social media, many of us find ourselves scrolling endlessly, chasing our next hit of dopamine. But these habits are fuelling our stress – and our brains are begging for a break. What our brains really need is some much-needed time off from concentrating. By not consciously focusing on anything and allowing the mind to drift, this can reduce stress and improve cognitive sharpness. This can often be easier said than done. But attention restoration theory (Art) can help you learn to give your brain space to drift. While this might sound like a fancy name for doing nothing, the theory is supported by neuroscience. Attention restoration theory was first put forward by psychologists Rachel and Stephen Kaplan in 1989. They theorised that spending time in nature can help restore focus and attention. They proposed there are two distinct types of attention: directed attention and undirected attention. Directed attention refers to deliberate concentration – such as studying, navigating through a busy place or posting on social media. Basically, it's any activity where our brain's attention is being directed at a specific task. Undirected attention is when we're not consciously trying to focus on anything – instead allowing things to gently capture our attention without trying. Think listening to chirping birds or watching leaves gently rustling in the breeze. In these instances, your attention naturally drifts without having to force your focus. Without time for undirected attention, it's thought that we experience 'attentional fatigue'. This can make it increasingly difficult to focus and concentrate, while distractions become more likely to grab our attention. In the past, we encountered many situations in our daily lives that we might classify as 'boring'. Moments such as waiting for the bus or standing in the supermarket queue. But these dull moments also gave our minds a chance to switch off. Now, our smartphones give us the opportunity for constant entertainment. Being able to constantly expose ourselves to intense, gripping stimuli offers little mental space for our overworked brains to recover. But attention restoration theory shows us how important it is to create space for moments that allow our brains to 'reset'. Restoring attention The origins of Kaplan and Kaplan's theory can actually be traced back to the 19th century. American psychologist William James was the first to formulate the concept of 'voluntary attention' – attention that requires effort. James' ideas were published against the backdrop of the broader cultural movement of Romanticism, which lauded nature. Romantic ideas about the restorative power of nature have since been backed by research – with numerous studies showing links between time in nature and lower stress levels, better attention, improvements in mental health, mood and better cognitive function. The restorative benefits of nature are backed by neuroscience, too. Neuroimaging has shown that activity in the amygdala – the part of the brain associated with stress and anxiety – was reduced when people were exposed to natural environments. But when exposed to urban environments, this activity was not reduced. Numerous studies have also since backed up Kaplan and Kaplan's theory that time in nature can help to restore attention and wellbeing. One systematic review of 42 studies found an association with exposure to natural environments and improvements in several aspects of cognitive performance – including attention. A randomised controlled trial using neuroimaging of the brain found signs of lower stress levels in adults who took a 40-minute walk in a natural environment, compared to participants who walked in an urban environment. The authors concluded that the nature walk facilitated attention restoration. Research has even shown that as little as ten minutes of undirected attention can result in a measurable uptick in performance on cognitive tests, as well as a reduction in attentional fatigue. Even simply walking on a treadmill while looking at a nature scene can produce this cognitive effect. Time in nature There are many ways you can put attention restoration theory to the test on your own. First, find any kind of green space – whether that's your local park, a river you can sit beside or a forest trail you can hike along. Next, make sure you put your phone and any other distractions away. Or, when you face boring moments during your day, instead of picking up your phone try seeing the pause as an opportunity to let your mind wander for a bit. Each of us may find certain environments to be more naturally supportive in allowing us to switch off and disengage the mind. So, if while trying to put attention restoration theory into practice, you find your brain pulling you back to structured tasks (such as mentally planning your week), this may be sign you should go someplace where it's easier for your mind to wander. Whether you're watching a ladybird crawl across your desk or visiting a vast expanse of nature, allow your attention to be undirected. It's not laziness, it's neurological maintenance. A livestream of deep sea creatures transfixes Argentina and sparks calls for refunding science

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Transparent-faced fish drift through dusky waters. Snowlike flecks of dead plants sift down from the world above. Soft sponges peek through the soot of the seafloor. Only occasional mutters among marine biologists break the thick silence. And somehow, this livestream of sea life in the South Atlantic feels like it has everyone in Argentina watching — or talking and making memes about it. The group of Argentine and American researchers behind this remotely operated vehicle filming life-forms 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) undersea told The Associated Press on Monday that they couldn't have imagined that their expedition would become such a sensation. It has attracted more than 1.6 million views a day on YouTube, dominating TV news broadcasts and even sparking a national conversation about the defunding of Argentine science under libertarian President Javier Milei. 'It was a huge surprise for us,' said expedition leader Daniel Lauretta. 'It's something that fills our hearts because we want to spread the word. Perhaps there are young people who are learning, maybe we're awakening some scientific curiosity.' The vast array of creatures glimpsed via high-definition camera include a placid starfish so orange it evokes Patrick of 'SpongeBob SquarePants' cartoon fame, a sea cucumber reminiscent of a sweet potato, a deep sea crab that looks like a hairy spider. The images have created a sense of collective wonder at the mysteries of the deep sea — and with it, a hearty dose of anthropomorphism as viewers assign zodiac stars to invertebrate and take social media quizzes along the lines of 'Which deep sea creature are you based on how you handle stress?' (If you ignore the world you're a translucent squid, if you explode with anger you're apparently a pistol shrimp). Often peaking at 50,000 simultaneous viewers, the livestream began last week and runs everyday until Aug. 10 for up to 10 hours as the scientists map the little-researched submarine gorge off the coast of Buenos Aires, collecting samples and identifying scores of new species. 'The clarity was incredible. The colors, the zoom capability — that really amazed me,' Lauretta said. 'I think that feeling reached the public too.' The project is a collaboration between scientists mostly from Conicet, Argentina's leading scientific funding and research body, and the Schmidt Ocean Institute Foundation, a nonprofit set up by Google's former executive chairman Eric E. Schmidt to advance oceanographic research. The expedition has also inspired pride in Argentine research at a time when Milei is slashing spending on science in a drive to eliminate Argentina's chronic fiscal deficit. Researchers and fellows from Conicet have sought to seize on the attention by calling for a 48-hour nationwide strike Wednesday. 'Argentines are very passionate about everything that happens in Argentina," said Georgina Valanci, 40, who seemed mesmerized by the livestream while crocheting on Monday. 'I think it represents a bit of the pride that something like this is being done in our country.' Milei dissolved the Ministry of Science and Technology after coming to power in late 2023. Conicet suffered a 21% budget cut in real terms last year. Salaries for Conicet researchers have lost 35% of their value in recent months. Industry estimates show state-funded science and technology organizations losing 3,400 jobs in the last year and a half. Each day as the video shows sea stars regenerating arms or amoeba engulfing prey, comments pop up expressing support for Conicet in real time. 'Long live Conicet!' several users posted on Monday.

The global AI contest hits the UN

With help from Aaron Mak The rivalry between the United States and China over who will dominate artificial intelligence has moved to an obscure battlefield: A Geneva-based United Nations agency most people have never heard of. The Trump administration announced in June — a full year early — that it will push for a second term for American diplomat Doreen Bogdan-Martin as secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union, the organization that sets voluntary international standards for technology ranging from radio frequencies and broadband to 6G mobile phones. This is the earliest the State Department has ever made this kind of push at the ITU, an indication of the growing urgency of the U.S.-China technological rivalry. The Trump AI Action Plan, released earlier this month, specifically names the ITU as key to America's global tech dominance. But some observers worry that Trump's tough-minded foreign policy approach may already be hurting the U.S. in its quest to keep Bogdan-Martin in office. The ITU has been a great-power battleground before. In 2022, with Huawei turning telecom into a global contest, America and China waged a proxy battle for control over the agency. The Chinese backed Russian candidate Rashid Ismailov, a former Russian telecom minister who lost decisively to Bogdan. Government and tech insiders say the stakes are even higher now because the ITU is setting standards for AI —more than 150 to date — for how governments and countries integrate the technology across existing operations. That's included standards for testing and evaluation of AI systems in areas like conversational AI tools and computer network diagnostics. So whoever controls the ITU will shape the global standards for AI development and integration. Founded more than 150 years ago to standardize telegraph systems, the ITU today includes the U.N.'s 193 members along with representatives of corporations including AT&T, China Unicom, Nokia and Sony. Over the years, the agency has become central to the growth of telecom technology, negotiating international agreements on everything from radio spectrum allocations to the orbital paths of satellites in outer space. ITU added AI to its suite of technologies with the launch of its AI For Good program in 2017. U.N. members vote every four years to select the agency's secretary general, and that vote has grown more loaded each election. Bogdan-Martin's predecessor, China's Houlin Zhao, developed a reputation among Americans of using his position to bend the ITU toward Beijing. 'What you saw over and over again was him trying to align the ITU with endorsing Chinese technology and downplaying U.S. complaints about the potential for security breaches by using ZTE or Huawei technology, or endorsing Chinese Belt and Road Initiative telecommunications projects in developing countries,' said Brett Schaefer, an expert on the U.N. at the American Enterprise Institute, and a former member of U.N. General Assembly's Committee on Contributions. The U.S. blacklisted Huawei and ZTE in 2020 as 'companies posing a national security threat'. China's Washington embassy and New York U.N. mission did not answer DFD's questions. Nor did the State Department or Bogdan-Martin. Beijing hasn't announced if it will contest Bogdan-Martin's renomination. In some respects, the U.S. is at the apex of its technological prowess. Nvidia and Microsoft both reached valuations above $4 trillion, making them the wealthiest companies in world history. Trump's AI Action Plan, released in July, is in part a call to keep the U.S. dominant by exporting American technology around the world. Notably, for a White House that rejects much of the world order, it calls for the U.S. to leverage its positions in international bodies, including the ITU. 'Everyone in the world should be using our technology, and we should make it easy for the world to use it,' White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios said last week in Washington. Observers say Bogdan-Martin's early re-entry into the race shows American officials are wary of China's growing influence. Bogdan-Martin easily defeated her rival in 2022, but Mark Lambert, a State Department veteran of the Biden and first Trump administrations, anticipated Bogdan-Martin's rivals would start their campaign ahead of time as well. 'If the Chinese and Russians are crafty, they'll find a like-minded candidate from Africa or Latin America to put forward to line up lesser developed country votes,' said Lambert. Mark Beall, who directed AI strategy in the Pentagon in the first Trump administration, said the U.S. would likely contest China's influence by appealing to the same voters from the lesser developed world, with the early announcement giving 'time to counter potential infrastructure-for-votes deals that some competitors might offer.' Recent signals in the wonky world of global telecom diplomacy may give the U.S. some cause for concern. Daniel Baer, who served as ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe under former President Barack Obama, said Trump's tariffs and slashing of foreign aid might be alienating potential ITU votes. 'In much of the world, there's probably less interest in doing favors for the United States than there might have been a year ago,' he said. In June, the ITU voted on the location of the agency's World Radio Conference, planned for 2027. Although Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick pitched Washington to host the confab, members voted instead to hold the event in Shanghai. 'That's not the outcome that the United States wanted,' said Fiona Alexander, a senior telecoms official in the Commerce Department from 2008 to 2019, during both the Obama and Trump administrations. 'We need to get serious. We need to get organized. There's a long-term play in all of these institutions because it's all about coalition building'. Privacy hawks hound the TSA over facial recognition Privacy-minded Senate Republicans are accusing the Transportation Security Administration of interfering with a bill to make airport screenings less intrusive, POLITICO's Benjamin Guggenheim reported Sunday. Senate Commerce Chair Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said he'd delay consideration of the bill last Tuesday, which would have required the TSA to notify passengers of their ability to opt-out of facial recognition scans and put checks on the storage of biometric data collected in the process. The bill was subject to intense opposition from the travel industry, but Republicans also grumbled about the TSA's involvement. When asked if the TSA raised concerns about the bill, co-sponsor Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) said, 'The short answer is yes; the long answer is hell yes.' He added, 'They're working like an ugly stripper to kill this bill, which tells me we're doing the right thing.' A senior Senate GOP aide also told POLITICO that the 'smears against [the] bill have TSA's fingerprints all over it.' The TSA did not respond to POLITICO's inquiries on the matter. Delta says its AI is not using our data to set prices Delta Air Lines is denying that it uses personal data to set 'individualized' airfares, POLITICO's Alfred Ng reports. The airline made the claims in a letter that the company sent on Friday to Sens. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.), in response to their questions about its pricing practices. Peter Carter, Delta's chief external affairs officer, wrote in the letter, 'Our AI-powered pricing functionality is designed to enhance our existing fare pricing processes using aggregated data.' This response doesn't seem to have allayed the senators' concerns. 'If Delta is in fact using aggregated instead of individualized data, that is welcome news,' Gallego said in a statement. 'But it still begs the question: why did their president brag to their investors about their desire to 'get you the right offer in your hand at the right time'?'
