Massajog sarpanch murder case: Court rejects Valmik Karad's discharge plea, next date Aug 4

Time of India22-07-2025
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A special MCOCA court in Beed on Tuesday rejected former Parli municipal council chief Valmik Karad's plea seeking discharge in the case of abduction and murder of Massajog sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh.
The court has reserved its decision on the plea against the seizure of Karad's movable and immovable assets.
Karad, a close aide of NCP's then agriculture minister Dhananjay Munde, was described by the state CID as the "mastermind" behind the murder.
On Dec 9, 2024, Deshmukh was abducted from the Umri toll naka and taken to Chincholi Takli Shiv, where he was subjected to torture before being killed, and his body was disposed of near Daithana phata in Beed.
The murder sparked statewide agitation and protests. In a combined chargesheet filed on Feb 27, the CID concluded that Deshmukh's murder resulted from a larger conspiracy by Karad and his seven aides "to create a reign of terror by eliminating anyone coming in the way of their Rs2 crore extortion bid" on a renewable energy firm, which invested over Rs300 crore in a windmill plant at Kaij in Beed district.
The Rs 2 crore extortion bid on Nov 29, 2024, is one of three cases, the other two being the abduction and murder of Deshmukh and the Dec 6 assault on the firm's employees.

Following the court's order on Tuesday, Karad's aide, Vishnu Chate, and five other co-accused filed applications seeking discharge in the case.
The prosecution opposed Karad's plea for bail in the case. "We have opposed Karad's bail plea and the discharge pleas filed by other co-accused," special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said. He said, "Today (Tuesday), we filed a plea requesting the court to frame draft charges against Valmik Karad and his associates under 12 to 13 different sections.
The hearing on this plea will be held later. The discharge applications filed by the accused in the Deshmukh murder case have been submitted belatedly.
As per legal provisions, such applications should be filed within two months of the chargesheet being submitted. However, they failed to do so. Hence, we have also urged the court to reject these applications. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for Aug 4."
Meanwhile, Karad's lawyer Vikas Khade said they will approach the high court to challenge the trial court's rejection of Karad's discharge application.
"A hearing on Karad's discharge plea was held, during which the court dismissed the application." Karad's bail application has also been submitted before the court. "Additionally, discharge applications have been filed by the lawyers of all the accused," Khade said.
Further informing that arguments were also presented by both sides regarding the seizure of property, he said, "We submitted our plea to lift the restrictions on the frozen bank account.
The hearing on this matter has been completed, and the court is expected to give its decision on the next date."

Justice Tribhuvan Dahiya passed these orders while hearing a petition filed by the accused, Gagandeep Singh. During the hearing of the case on Monday, counsels representing Navjot Kaur and Gagandeep Singh informed the bench that the disputes between them could be settled by way of mediation, and for this purpose, the parties may be referred to the Mediation and Conciliation Centre of the Court. The bench accepted their request and referred the matter for mediation. 'Parties through their counsel are directed to appear before the Mediation and Conciliation Centre on August 12. Wage hike, arrear talks fail between Karnataka transport union and Siddaramaiah

Talks between the Karnataka government and transport corporation employees ended in a deadlock on Monday, with no agreement reached on key issues of wage revision and arrears employees had threatened to go on strike from Tuesday, but have now deferred their protest, citing a pending court hearing on the same of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) Staff and Workers Federation, HV Anantha Subbarao, said the meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah lasted two hours but failed to yield results. The unions are demanding a 25 per cent wage hike from the current base of Rs Rs 1,124 and arrears for 38 months, which they estimate to be around Rs 1,800 'The Chief Minister appealed to us to withdraw the strike. He offered to pay arrears for 14 months and begin wage negotiations only after the Assembly session. But we cannot accept that. We want arrears for the entire 38-month period, we worked during that time. We also want a commitment to start wage hike talks immediately,' Subbarao added that the issue is now narrowed down to 24 months' arrears, roughly Rs 1,000 crore, as the government has already agreed to pay for 14 months. 'This is not a fresh financial burden. Talks can still continue even during the strike, but the ball is in the government's court,' he Minister Siddaramaiah, however, said the unions' current demands go beyond what was agreed to earlier. 'In 2016, when I was Chief Minister, I had implemented a 12.5 per cent wage hike. In March 2023, the previous government signed an agreement for a 15 per cent increase in basic pay. A committee led by Srinivas Murthy recommended paying arrears from January 2022 to February 2023, and we have accepted that. But asking for 38 months of arrears now is unreasonable,' he pointed out that the financial condition of the transport corporations is fragile. 'When we came to power, the collective debt was Rs 4,000 crore. In 2018, it was only Rs 14 crore. None of the corporations are running in profit. The government will not act unfairly, but we all have to cooperate,' he insisted that matters should be resolved through dialogue and said the possibility of holding elections to transport unions would be examined. Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, and several corporation chairpersons and union leaders were present at the the strike has been deferred, the deadlock remains. 'There will be no protest tomorrow. We will wait for the court hearing on Tuesday before deciding our next course of action,' the union said.- Ends IN THIS STORY#Karnataka

'Tired of way men treat Republican women': Marjorie Taylor Greene says she's losing faith in GOP; accuses party of abandoning key issues

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent far-right Republican and close ally of US President Donald Trump , publicly voiced frustration with her own party, saying it is drifting away from policies that support everyday Americans and mistreating women within its ranks. She said she feels increasingly disconnected from the Republican Party as she continues to clash with both party leadership and Trump on several issues. In a recent interview with The Daily Mail, the Georgia congresswoman shared her views. Greene had previously condemned Israel's war in Gaza, calling it a 'genocide,' opposed Trump's executive order on artificial intelligence, and demanded the release of the Epstein Files. 'I don't know if the Republican Party is leaving me, or if I'm kind of not relating to the Republican Party as much anymore,' Greene said, as quoted by The Independent. 'I don't know which one it is.' Greene said the party is turning away from priorities that matter to regular Americans. She criticised the lack of action on cutting foreign aid, the diminished use of the department of government efficiency to reduce federal spending, and the lack of progress on inflation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? I really don't,' she said. 'But I'll tell you one thing, the course that it's on, I don't want to have anything to do with it, and I just don't care anymore.' Greene has consistently opposed US military aid to Ukraine during the Russia–Ukraine conflict, a policy that remains in place. She has also criticised the administration's involvement in the Iran–Israel conflict. She noted that since Elon Musk , described as the de facto head of DOGE, left the White House, the administration appears to have shifted focus. While DOGE staffers remain in place throughout the government, reports suggest they now have less authority. Greene also expressed concern that the Republican Party is pushing away younger voters by continuing to back unpopular policies. She added that conservative women may also feel alienated by the way they are treated within the party. 'I think there's other women in our party that are really sick and tired of the way men treat Republican women,' Greene said. She cited the case of Representative Elise Stefanik of New York. Trump had nominated Stefanik for US ambassador to the UN, but later withdrew the nomination to preserve the Republican majority in the House. Former national security adviser Mike Waltz was nominated instead. Greene said Stefanik got 'screwed' by Speaker Mike Johnson and others in the White House, though she made clear she did not blame the president. Despite her dissatisfaction, Greene did not say she plans to leave the Republican Party.
