Lindsey Graham Tries and Fails to Joke About a Third Trump Term
The South Carolina senator, who a decade ago told Trump to ' go to hell,' continued his full-throated embrace of the administration's MAGA makeovers.
'Look forward to hearing from 48—whoops 47—about who will be this year's Trump/Kennedy Center honorees,' Graham wrote on X in response to the president teasing his honorees for the performing arts institution he has taken over.
'I can't wait to find out who these great Americans are,' he added. 'I'm all-in trying to help President @realDonaldTrump structurally and aesthetically improve one of the greatest gems of American culture.'
Trump has floated the possibility of having the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts bear his name instead, and a GOP bill proposing that change was introduced in the House last month.
The president has also repeatedly mentioned serving a third term—an unconstitutional move, but one for which another GOP House bill provides a convenient workaround.
Yet in Graham's attempt to parrot Trump's style by 'mistakenly' referring to him as the 48th president, he forgot one simple fact: Trump was the 45th and is now the 47th president, meaning whoever is inaugurated as the 48th commander-in-chief will, by definition, be a different person.
Graham's office didn't immediately respond to the Daily Beast asking if he was aware of his mistake, or if he supported Rep. Andy Ogles' resolution enabling a third term.
When asked by a reporter in March whether Trump 'can run for a third term,' Graham kicked the can down the road.
'Ask me in '27,' he said.

'Based on Russia's average daily casualty rate in 2025 so far, as reported by Ukrainian general staff, 4.4 more years of war would lead to approximately 1,930,000 further Russian casualties (killed and wounded). 'This is in addition to the approximately 1,060,000 casualties Russia has already likely sustained since launching the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, including around 250,000 killed or missing (presumed dead).' After his talks with Putin, Trump told Fox News: 'I think we're pretty close to a deal. Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they'll say 'no'.' But speaking following talks with European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels today, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy said: 'The constitution of Ukraine makes it impossible to give up territory or trade land. Top Armed Services Democrat calls Trump-Putin summit ‘very disappointing'
Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.), the ranking Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, said he was very disappointed by the historic summit between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. In an interview on NewsNation's 'The Hill Sunday,' Smith criticized the U.S. president for appearing to emerge from his meeting more aligned with Putin in pushing for an end to the war in Ukraine without first agreeing to a ceasefire. 'The summit in Alaska was very disappointing,' Smith said in the interview. 'We took the demand for a ceasefire off the table in exchange for nothing.' Smith also criticized Trump's 'deference' to the Russian leader, contrasting that approach with the antagonism on display during the explosive Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February. 'The deference that President Trump showed to Putin—never once just stating the basic notion that Ukraine has a right to exist as a sovereign, democratic country and that the invasion was illegal, unlawful,' Smith said.
