Malaysia's palm oil stocks rise to highest in nearly two years

The Star6 days ago
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's palm oil stocks rose for a fifth consecutive month in July to their highest level in almost two years as production growth outpaced exports, data from the industry regulator showed on Monday.
The rise in inventory in the world's second-biggest producer of the tropical oil could weigh on benchmark Malaysian futures, which were trading near their highest in nearly four months.
Palm oil inventories at the end of July rose 4.02% over the month to 2.11 million metric tons, the highest since December 2023, data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) showed.
Crude palm oil production was up 7.09% in July from June to 1.81 million tons, the highest since September last year, while palm oil exports increased by 3.82% to 1.31 million tons after a large fall in June, the MPOB said.
A Reuters survey had forecast Malaysian inventory at 2.25 million tons, with output seen at 1.83 million tons and exports at 1.3 million tons. Malaysian July exports were capped by aggressive selling at a discount by rival Indonesia, which wanted to ship as much as possible before a higher export duty becomes effective in August, said Tajgir Rahman, general manager, trading and procurement at IFFCO.
Exports from Malaysia will rise in August, as Indonesia's move to raise its export tax narrows the discounts that Indonesian shipments had been enjoying over Malaysian supplies, he said.
Malaysia's palm oil exports in the first ten days of August rose 23.3% compared to the first ten days of July, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Sunday.
The rise in palm oil stocks is not burdensome for the market, as production in August is underperforming, while exports are picking up, said Anilkumar Bagani, research head of Mumbai-based vegetable oil broker Sunvin Group. - Reuters

Chery becomes first Chinese carmaker to export over 5 million vehicles

KUALA LUMPUR: Chery International Group has become the first Chinese car company to export more than five million vehicles worldwide. It has also maintained the No. 1 position for passenger car exports for 22 consecutive years. In July, Chery International achieved the "Double 500" milestone, emerging as the fastest-rising carmaker on both the Fortune Global 500 and the Fortune China 500 lists. The group is now ranked 233rd globally, up from 385th in 2024. It is ranked 59th in China, up from 100th in 2024. These achievements were driven by the Omoda/Jaecoo brand in 44 markets across Asean, Europe, Australia and South America. In just over two years, Omoda/Jaecoo amassed a 37 per cent share of Chery International's total export volume, with cumulative global sales surpassing 570,000 units. It is the fastest emerging brand globally to exceed the half-million mark in sales. Omoda/Jaecoo models have also made significant strides in the new energy vehicle (NEV) category. In the first quarter of this year, NEV models accounted for 13,023 units, a sharp rise from 2,325 units in the same period in 2024. In the first half of 2025, NEVs accounted for 40 per cent of its total exports. Omoda/Jaecoo's global momentum is equally evident in Europe, where it has become the fastest-growing Chinese automotive brand and the first ever to sell over 10,000 units in Spain within 11 months in the market. In Malaysia, the brand grew quickly after the Jaecoo J7 was launched in July 2024. The company announced that more than 17,000 of its vehicles are now on Malaysian roads. According to the Road Transport Department, Omoda/Jaecoo remained among Malaysia's top five automotive brands in the first half of 2025. Moving forward, Omoda/Jaecoo's global export strategy will focus on deeper investments in key markets in Europe, South America and Asean. Malaysia will serve as the centralised right-hand drive hub to support the brand's global ambitions.

Lee Chong Wei joins BAM to elevate Malaysian badminton

KUALA LUMPUR: Former national men's doubles player Tan Boon Heong (pic) has expressed support for Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei's appointment as a new Council Member of the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). He believes Chong Wei's experience and leadership can significantly contribute to BAM's mission of strengthening Malaysian badminton. Tan emphasised the importance of granting Chong Wei the autonomy to implement necessary changes within the association. 'If Datuk Seri Chong Wei joins BAM, I really feel he can help BAM. But if he is only there just to attend meetings, to me that would be a waste.' He added that Chong Wei's deep understanding of the sport positions him well to identify and address key areas for improvement. BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz recently announced Chong Wei's inclusion in the council as part of efforts to revitalise Malaysian badminton. The association also appointed three corporate leaders to strengthen its governance and strategic direction. Employees Provident Fund (EPF) director Tan Sri Gooi Hoe Soon will oversee finance, while former NTV7 CEO Datuk Seri Shazalli Ramly will handle branding and media strategy. Lawyer Datuk Sunil Abraham has been entrusted with legal matters. The appointments align with BAM's long-term vision of establishing Malaysia as a global badminton powerhouse. - Bernama

HLIB sees Sunway as prime domestic growth proxy, retains 'Buy' with RM5.90 target

KUALA LUMPUR: Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB) is doubling down on Sunway Bhd's growth prospects, reiterating its BUY call with a sum-of-parts (SOP) target price of RM5.90, underpinned by rising exposure to Malaysia's accelerating economic upcycle. The investment bank's bullish stance cements Sunway as a key proxy for Malaysia's growth story heading into 2026. HLIB said Sunway is well-positioned to capitalise on domestic momentum, with multiple catalysts on the horizon – from stronger-than-expected construction order book wins and a potential conversion of its Medini land to freehold status to the planned healthcare arm listing in early 2026, which could unlock substantial shareholder value. Over the longer term, HLIB expects Sunway's property segment to stay resilient, supported by healthy take-up from phased launches, strategic landbank expansion, and leverage to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), alongside steady progress in its Singapore-based projects. HLIB said the technical outlook for Sunway remains bullish. It noted that Sunway's share price has rebounded sharply from a double-bottom at RM4.00 (January 17) and RM3.93 (April 7), breaking above its 200-day moving average (RM4.65) to hit an all-time high of RM5.16 on July 18, before closing at RM4.74 on Monday. The investment bank sees the stockholding firm above the RM4.64 support level, with upside potential towards RM4.84, RM5.00, RM5.15, and RM5.32.
