In a letter to Union road transport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari, Codissia president M Karthikeyan highlighted that Coimbatore had contributed Rs2 lakh crore to Tamil Nadu's gross state domestic product last year and that one of India's first projects under the build-operate-transfer model was implemented in the district - a 27km stretch between Neelambur and Madukkarai that provides vital access to Kerala from various parts of the country.
"While both ends of the bypass road are six-lane expressways, the central 27km stretch abruptly narrows into a two-lane road. This segment is riddled with blackspots and is highly dangerous, with frequent accidents and loss of lives," he said.
Now that the National Highways Authority of India has taken over the project from L&T after a prolonged effort, the Union transport and highways ministry should take steps to upgrade this two-lane stretch into a six-lane expressway with service roads, he said.

"Once completed, this will become a model road in Coimbatore, improving access to the new airport terminal, container corporation, railway goods shed, industrial parks, educational institutions, hospitals, IT parks, shopping malls, entertainment centres, residential areas and more," Karthikeyan said.
He then appealed the Union minister to implement the project at the earliest, stating it would be a major relief not only for the people of Coimbatore but also for commuters from Kerala traveling to Bengaluru, Chennai and other regions.

In Chikhli, NMC initiated steps to acquire around 31,025.98 sq metre of land spread across four private owners, three of whom are linked to a builder and one to an individual. While the land is vacant, objections have been raised over the compensation amount, with demands for higher payouts. Indian drugmakers seek exemption for generics from US supplies probe
Mumbai: A US government probe into pharmaceutical imports and their implications on national security must exclude generic drugs from its purview, a business delegation from the Indian pharmaceutical industry told Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal at a meeting held last local industry's contention assumes significance in the backdrop of the impending India-US bilateral trade agreement and the uncertainty over reciprocal tariffs being imposed by the US government. So far, the US has exempted pharmaceutical imports from the proposed tariffs of 50%, half of which are to kick in on August 27. Experts said that the issues related to supplies of medicines from India to the US are critical given the plans of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit China for the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation meeting later this month in Tianjin. In April, under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act, 1962, the US government had initiated an investigation into imports of medicines to the country, sparking concerns over potential supply chain disruptions and pricing volatility there. The law grants authority to the US President to impose restrictions on such imports if those are deemed to threaten US national security. People familiar with the mater told ET that the meeting with the pharmaceutical industry was called by the commerce ministry to discuss a range of issues, including ways to tackle abrupt disruptions and to strengthen the industry with closer attention to new research and innovation. New Delhi: The government on Monday introduced two bills - Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, and The Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 - even as the Opposition's continuing protest against the special intensive revision (SIR) issue hit the rest of the work of the House, forcing three adjournments. Amid the din of the Opposition protest, Union minister of commerce and industry Piyush Goyal introduced the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2025, and then referred it to a select committee. The proposed legislation seeks to amend "certain enactments for decriminalising and rationalising offences to further enhance trust-based governance for ease of living and doing business."
