Industrial associations in Coimbatore to push for three major road projects

The Hindu15-05-2025

Three road projects can change the face of Coimbatore district and bring huge investments and development. However, these projects remain on paper hampering the district's growth, say industrial associations in Coimbatore.
As many as 10 industrial associations here will take up with the Central and State governments the need to widen Neelambur bypass, development of eastern ring road, and completion of the western bypass at the earliest.
J. Sathish, director of Kongu Global Forum, said the 10 associations that have come together under the 'Coimbatore Nxt' banner will take up with the Central and State governments the need to expedite the three road projects.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has taken over the 27-km, two-lane Neelambur bypass. This stretch is connected to six-lane roads on either side (Neelambur and Madukkarai) and hence, face traffic snarls and accidents. The NHAI should widen this road into four or six lane as land is available with the NHAI for the widening works, he said.
In the case of the eastern bypass, the 81-km road project has not progressed for almost five years. It will connect 10 highway roads. The project is with the NHAI. Land required to develop this greenfield road should be identified and acquired. It will be a key stretch to bring investments to Coimbatore as there is no scope to widen the existing Avinashi and Trichy roads, he said.
The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codissia) has submitted a demand to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari in this regard. The State government is developing the Western bypass and only 70 % of the works are completed in phase one of the project. The land acquisition should be completed for phase two and it should be expedited for phase three.
These roads will bring about a change in land use patterns and thus lead to industrial development, he said.

Delhi, Bengaluru To Get Flying Buses? Gadkari Outlines Govt's Plans To Cut Traffic Woes

Last Updated: Nitin Gadkari has detailed the government's plans to ease the traffic problems in major cities of the country, including Delhi and Bengaluru. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has outlined the future of the Indian transport system in major cities of the country, which will have an air pod system and flash-charging electric buses. These transportation initiatives will ease the problem of traffic congestion, bringing relief to the residents from long, tiring journeys. Detailing the government's plan in this direction, Gadkari said that a pod system in the air is being planned along the Dhaula Kuan-Manesar route. 'We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road," the Union Minister told news agency ANI. He also underlined that a similar study is being carried out in Bengaluru – a city which is infamous for its long traffic congestion, particularly during rainfall. #WATCH | When asked about 'flying buses', Union Minister Nitin Gadkari says, '…We want to start a pod system in the air from Dhaula Kuan to Manesar because there is a lot of traffic on this road. We are doing the same study in Bengaluru. In Uttarakhand and Kashmir, we are… — ANI (@ANI) June 9, 2025 What Is Pod System? A pod-based transport system consists of small, driverless electric vehicles that run on raised tracks by either hanging from rails above or running on top of them. They are similar to on-demand taxis, wherein one can call a pod when in need and transit from one place to another without any stoppage. A pod can carry around five to six people. Gadkari said that the government has started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur, which has 135 seats. This bus will run at a speed of 120 km/h and will stop for 30 seconds to recharge and run again. 'We have also started a flash-charging electric bus in Nagpur with 135 seats. This bus will be executive class with TVs in front. It will run on the road to Nagpur. The bus will have a speed of 120 kmph. It will stop for 30 seconds after every 40 kilometres, people will get off and get on. The bus will get charged in 30 seconds and will start again…The bus will be less expensive because it will require less battery power," he detailed, highlighting that the fare on such buses will be 30% lower compared to diesel buses. Upon successful completion of the initiative in Nagpur, the government will roll out the same buses from Delhi to Jaipur, Delhi to Dehradun, Bangalore to Chennai, Mumbai to Nashik, and Pune, the Minister announced. Naidu fast-tracks highway construction

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has set a target to complete 1,040 km of national highway projects with an outlay of Rs 20,067 crore in the state by the end of 2025. To achieve this, he has directed officials to resolve all outstanding issues related to land acquisition, forest, and wildlife clearances for both ongoing and upcoming state and national highway projects by the end of July. The Chief Minister underscored the critical need for uninterrupted and accelerated execution of road works across Andhra Pradesh. During a comprehensive review meeting held at the Secretariat on Monday with senior officials and contractors, Naidu assessed the current status of road infrastructure projects. Expressing his dissatisfaction over the existing delays in certain projects, he issued a clear directive that no further delays in road construction will be tolerated. 'Delays are unacceptable. Accelerate every project and clear all bottlenecks without fail," said Naidu. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the progress made in the previous financial year, stating that 770 km of roads were completed under the purview of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), at a total cost of Rs 11,325 crore. Andhra Pradesh currently boasts a network of 8,744 km of national highways. Of this, 4,406 km fall under the jurisdiction of NHAI, 641 km are managed by the Project Implementation Unit (PIU) under MoRTH, and 3,697 km are maintained by the NH (R&B) wing. Currently, 144 road projects, spanning a combined length of 3,483 km, are under construction across the state. These projects, undertaken by NHAI and MoRTH, represent an estimated outlay of Rs 76,856 crore. In addition, several more projects are in the pipeline and are expected to commence shortly. Of the 3,483 km currently under development, 1,392 km are NHAI roads, while 2,091 km fall under the MoRTH portfolio. The Chief Minister's ambitious target for the current year, aiming for the completion of 1,040 km of road work with Rs 20,067 crore, is anticipated to significantly enhance road connectivity and overall infrastructure in the state. Meanwhile, the "Mission Pothole-Free Roads," an initiative launched by the Chief Minister in November last year with an outlay of Rs 860.81 crore, has achieved remarkable progress, with 97 per cent completion as of June 6, officials said. A total of 19,475 km of roads have been repaired and potholes filled under this mission.

Dongargaon casting yard helps Metro Ph 2 zip ahead

Nagpur: Metro Phase 2 construction is accelerating, with the 18.5 km Butibori stretch, which is the longest in the phase with 10 stations, seeing rapid development on multiple fronts — civil works, infrastructure integration and coordination with national agencies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The establishment of a new casting yard at Dongargaon will support the production of concrete segments required for the Reach 1 viaduct, enabling faster execution of elevated track works. MahaMetro officials indicated that work on this front is progressing swiftly. A senior official confirmed that geotechnical surveys along Wardha Road are nearly complete, and technical drawings, including viaduct elevation from road level, have also been finalised. Equally significant is the integration of Metro construction with the realignment of National Highway 44 (NH-44). The Metro will extend from Khapri — currently the last operational station on the North-South corridor — toward the Butibori MIDC industrial estate, passing through the middle of NH-44. This requires existing highway alignment to be shifted toward left to accommodate the Metro's elevated route, as previously reported by TOI on February 21. MahaMetro and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have completed formalities for the realignment. NHAI coordinated with MahaMetro to widen the highway by 2.5 metres toward the left from Jamtha, over a stretch of 10km. This will ensure balanced space on both sides for future road expansion to six lanes, without needing private land acquisition. Once the road is widened, the Metro will run on a new centreline on the elevated viaduct. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Construction is also progressing on the ground-level section between Khapri and the start of the elevated route. Around 2 km of at-grade section is being laid beyond Khapri before the Metro transitions onto Wardha Road. Meanwhile, slabs for two key at-grade stations — Metro City and Eco Park — have already been completed, including the utility shifting that is in progress in final stages. The alignment also involves crossing a railway line. MahaMetro has submitted a proposal for permission to the railway authorities and awaits approval. Tree-cutting permissions for the Jamtha–Butibori corridor have been also secured and are almost completed, clearing the way forward for the road widening and utility works. Five of the 10 stations planned in this phase are coming up on NHAI land, making coordination critical.
