Wallabies' second-half surge gives Schmidt confidence they can level the series against the Lions
'This time last year we would have melted," Schmidt said after the 27-19 loss on Saturday, "but I love the way this team is developing.'
The Lions overpowered the Australians in the early exchanges and led 24-5 just after halftime. The Lions, coming off a series of five wins in tour games, had all the momentum for the first 50 minutes and the ball was bouncing their way.
But late tries to replacements Carlo Tizzano and Tate McDermott cut the final margin to eight points.
'Very proud of the way the players fought their way back,' Schmidt said. "A comparatively young side ... still finding their way.
'There was enough demonstration that we're already desperate, but we've got to be more accurate."
The Wallabies have been a work in progress since Schmidt was hired in the wake of Australia's failure to make the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup in 2023. The Wallabies had six wins in 13 tests in a 2024 season that ended in a 22-19 loss to Ireland in Dublin to earn back some credibility, and opened this international season with a narrow 21-18 win over Fiji two weeks ago.
Another week together and the return of forwards Will Skelton and Rob Valetini from injury will help the Wallabies next week in Melbourne, where they need a win to ensure the series is alive going into the third and final test in Sydney.
The team is "desperate to keep the series alive,' Schmidt said.
'Melbourne is going to be massive for both teams.'
Blindside flanker Nick Champion de Crespigny made his test debut in Brisbane and 22-year-old Tom Lynagh, son of Wallabies great Michael Lynagh, started a test for the first time at No. 10.
Lynagh made some good runs, kicked well and defended bravely but, as Schmidt noted, the young flyhalf was forced to be more reactive than proactive in attack because of the way the Lions were dominating the first half.
He was tackled in the air by Tom Curry as he leaped to take a high ball just before the break but continued until midway through the second half to help claw back some momentum for the home team.
Replacement scumhalf McDermott had an immediate impact off the bench, creating a try for Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i that was disallowed and then scoring one of the two late tries for Australia.
British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell is expecting the Australians to be more cohesive and more dangerous in the second test, and he has cautioned his players to look at history.
In 2001, the Lions won the first test in Brisbane and then lost in Melbourne and Sydney as Australia rallied for an historic series victory. In 2013, the Lions narrowly won in Brisbane before losing the second test in Melbourne. They needed a big lift in Sydney to clinch that series.
'We know what's coming,' Farrell said. 'We know what happened in the second half here and we roll into the second game knowing full well what happened in 2013.'
'When an Australia team becomes desperate, it is difficult to handle, so we expect a different game next weekend," he added. "We need to make sure we are ready for them to be at their best (because) it'll take a better performance than what we've shown here to make sure we get a win next week.'

Tight-knit P.E.I. men's rugby team ready to take on all comers at Canada Games
With only a few weeks left until the whistle blows at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John's, N.L., Prince Edward Island's men's rugby sevens team is sweating it out in practice in the hope of finishing in the top five. The sport is back in the games for the first time in over a decade. The teams will be playing seven versus seven rugby, with a 12-person roster. On paper, P.E.I.'s roster may look like that of other teams. However, the players on this team said the fact that they have been playing with each other for years makes them stand out. "We got a lot of fight compared to some other provinces. I think we don't really roll over and lose easily compared to some other provinces," said winger Colby Munro. Munro said that team camaraderie gives them an edge, a sentiment that is shared among the team. Head coach Darryl Boudreau said this team is aiming to be the top Maritime team, a goal he believes to be attainable. "This group is unique. It's a group that has a lot of grit, it's a group that has a lot of skill, physicality, play-making abilities — and like I say, it is fun," said Boudreau. One of the team's biggest challenges is P.E.I.'s small talent pool compared to more-populated provinces. But Camden Hutchinson, who plays hook, said that the fact that province is so small has meant that they all know each other's game very well. They have grown up playing on the same high school, university and provincial teams, he said. "We're not just a randomly selected group of guys. We've all played together for years. So when I see a guy going in, I know what he's gonna do. I've played with him," Hutchinson said. "I know how each one of my teammates plays. I think that's the difference." Centre Campbell Wadman said one of the main challenges that the team has been working to overcome is adapting to playing with only seven players on the field. Many of the players are used to playing with 15 pairs of cleats on each team. But Wadman said the bond among the players makes up for that difference. "It's a family," he said. "Especially this team — like, we've all known each other for years. We've all played together before... It's awesome culture. "We're all brothers, pretty well." This will be the first time many of the players have competed at this level. Coach Boudreau he said is thankful to have been able to help bring the team along. "It's an opportunity for us to play on the national stage, represent your province, wear your colours and… do the best that you can during the competitions themselves," he said. "Sport is a crazy thing, so you never know what can happen at the end of the game."

All you have to do is turn on the tape,' former Patriots cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino said last season after Gonzalez was one of the more notable Pro Bowl snubs. 'If guys aren't talking about him, that's negligence. I don't know. The guy is playing at a very high level. I don't care what anybody says. That's how I feel about the guy. He's a great competitor. Look for Jones as the primary slot corner, while Austin, Bolden, Battle, and Dial figure to provide depth and special teams value. That being said, this position is all about Gonzalez. He's a cornerstone of the defense and is only getting better. Given his rapid ascent in just two seasons, it's feasible to one day imagine him taking his spot alongside some of the great defensive backs in franchise history. As long as he's a Patriot (he could be in line for a colossal payday as early as next offseason) this group will be considered one of the best in the AFC. If he and Davis can stay healthy (the 28-year-old never played a full season), this group could be poised for an impressive 2025. Related : How does this position rate against the rest of the league? With Gonzalez and Davis, the top of the depth chart is among the best in the league. With a few exceptions (including Jones), the rest of the group is relatively young and unproven, but the ceiling remains high.
