Freddie Prinze Jr. reveals the secret behind his 23-year marriage with Sarah Michelle Gellar
During a recent interview with Variety, the 49-year-old actor candidly opened up about how he and Gellar, 48, have kept their relationship strong in Hollywood.
"Marriage is hard no matter what business you're in," the "She's All That" star said. "What works for us might not work for everyone else."
He continued, "We work at it. I'm not perfect. She's not perfect. We piss each other off, but we respect one another. We were friends first."
"Maybe that's the secret? It wasn't just "Oh, she's hot, he's hot — let's hook up," he added. "But I know people who've done it the other way, and their relationships are just as strong as mine."
Gellar and Prinze Jr. first met while filming the hit 1997 horror movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer." However, sparks didn't immediately fly between the two.
In a 2001 interview with People, Prinze Jr. admitted that the future couple "really didn't dig each other" at first.
"Then one day I gave her a ride to the gym," he said. "We talked on the way up, and she was a cool chick."
The pair became friends, but their relationship didn't turn romantic until three years later. During a joint interview with People Now in 2020, Gellar and Prinze Jr. explained how they accidentally went on a first date.
"We were friends for a very long time. We'd had many dinners before. And we were supposed to go with someone else, and the third person didn't make it out and we decided to still go," the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" alum recalled.
"We were just two people at dinner catching up," Gellar continued. "We had a long car ride and a long dinner and things just happened."
Prinze Jr. told the outlet that he completely lost interest in seeing other women after his first date with Gellar.
"I didn't go on dates with other girls, nor did I even want to pursue dates with other girls," he said.
The couple announced their engagement in 2001 and tied the knot a year later in Mexico when Gellar was 24 and Prinze was 26.
Prinze Jr. and Gellar, who also co-starred in 2002's "Scooby-Doo" and the 2004 sequel "Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed," welcomed their first child, daughter Charlotte Grace, in 2009. In 2012, Gellar gave birth to their son, Rocky James.
While speaking with Variety, Prinze Jr. explained how he treasured his family life with Gellar and their children.
"I just love my kids," he said. "My daughter is away for the summer, and I hate it. I like hanging out with my son — he's really funny. I love my wife, man. I married her for a reason."
During a December 2024 interview with Fox News Digital, Gellar weighed in on the key to an enduring union. She also expressed her view that changes in societal values had led to the decline of long-lasting relationships.
"I think everything takes work in you, whether it's a friendship or a work relationship or a marriage," the "Dexter: Original Sin" star said.
"You have to put the work in," she continued. "And we live in an extremely disposable society now."
"Your phone breaks, you don't fix it. You get a new one," Gellar added. "And I think that's a lot of the attitude toward relationships."
"And I don't know, maybe separate bathrooms," the actress joked.
Prinze Jr. is currently starring in the 2025 version of "I Know What You Did Last Summer," which was released on Friday. The actor reprised his role as Ray Bronson in the legacy sequel to the first movie in the four-part franchise.
The couple's former co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt also returned to play the original film's protagonist, Julie James. Hewitt and Prinze Jr. previously reunited in the 1998 sequel "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer."
Gellar, whose character Helen Shivers was killed off in the first film, made a cameo appearance in the new installment during a dream sequence.
"I Know What You Did Last Summer" was released on June 18.

CC Sabathia and his family have a bumpy ride to Cooperstown
COOPERSTOWN, NY (AP) — For CC Sabathia, getting elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame was much easier than actually getting to the Hall of Fame. Sabathia, whose career spanned 19 seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees, was voted in on his first year of eligibility. Getting to Cooperstown for Hall of Fame weekend activities to be capped by his induction Sunday proved a tad more difficult. 'It was an adventure,' Sabathia said Saturday. Sabathia, wife Amber and their four children left their Alpine, New Jersey, home at about 4 p.m. Thursday. They traveled in two vehicles as is their family custom and were about 75 miles (120 kilometers) into their 177-mile trip when things got interesting. 'We stopped to get food. Everything's going great,' Sabathia said. 'We tried to get on the on-ramp on (Route) 17 and the car just stopped. I was behind her (Amber). Most of the time when we're driving, I'm gone. I'm never driving behind her, but for some reason I was taking my time riding behind her.' Sabathia had a clear view of what was happening. They called for assistance. The family piled into Sabathia's car and returned home to grab another vehicle as a tow truck towed their broken-down Escalade back to Alpine. The Sabathias arrived in Cooperstown at about midnight. What should have been a drive of about three hours became an eight-hour journey. 'It was pretty funny. I was taking pictures. My kids were doing TikToks and Amber was in the back like the super serious person she is getting everything done,' Sabathia said. 'People were honking at us and recognizing us on the side of the road. It was fun for us. 'For her it was a nightmare.' Woman Says Her Husband Made a ‘Strange' Comment to Her Female Friend — But He Says She's ‘Reading' into It ‘Too Much'
"He says I'm reading too much into it and he was just trying to be friendly as he could see my friend was upset," the woman said of her husband A woman is unsure if she's overreacting after her husband made a 'strange' comment to her female friend. In a post on Mumsnet's 'Am I Being Unreasonable?' forum, the woman explained that she recently had her best friend over for dinner while her husband was out with friends. 'My friend had been upset while talking with me about some relationship issues, one of which related to trying for a child,' the woman said, adding that the friend's husband often says he is too 'tired' from work to try to conceive. The original poster (OP) said that her own husband then came home and that it was 'clear that my friend had been crying.' She said her husband asked the friend what was wrong, and she explained that she 'was upset about not being pregnant yet, and that her [husband] was often giving reasons not to try.' The OP said that this was when her husband made the questionable comment. She recalled that he told her friend something along the lines of, '[Your husband] must be crazy,' and that he was 'surprised' that the other man wasn't taking the opportunity to have lots of 'fun' with her. 'This might be my insecurity, but I don't think [my husband] should have said what he did,' the OP said. 'I have spoken to him, and he says I'm reading too much into it and he was just trying to be friendly as he could see my friend was upset." In a follow-up comment, the woman said that the most recent comment came after a past incident in which her husband once asked her to wear an outfit that he saw the same friend wearing, as it would 'really turn him on.' 'He was drunk and apologized profusely in the following days. But it did make me think he finds my friend attractive,' she added. 'Now I don't know if I'm overreacting,' the woman confessed. The OP's post sparked a debate among her fellow Mumsnet users. Some commenters said they felt the comment was relatively innocuous and that she should try not to overthink it. 'I think he just didn't know what to say and felt awkward when he walked into [the conversation], so he made a light-hearted comment about it [...].
