Thousands of citizens line up as Pimpri-Chinchwad bids adieu to palkhis
At the same time, the industrial city first welcomed the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi which entered the civic limits this morning.
The Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi left Akurdi around 5 am.
'Like every year, the citizens of Akurdi gave shelter to various 'dindis' and made meal arrangements for the warkaris' said Iklas Sayeed, a local activist.
Throughout the night, citizens from across Pimpri-Chinchwad crowded Akurdi to have a darshan of the Sant Tukaram Maharaj which were carried in the palkhi to Pandharpur, a distance of 250 km.
Around 5 am, the palkhi procession then left Akurdi.
'The Palkhi procession reached HA premises in Pimpri around 6.30. And after breakfast by the warkaris, the palkhi left for Pune City around 8.15 am. This time, it left half an hour early,' said former corporators Geeta Mancharkar.
The palkhi was then given a rousing welcome by citizens who had lined up on both sides of the highway between Vallabh Nagar and Nashik Phata.
From Nashik Phata to Dapodi, citizens rushed forth at every short distance to have a darshan of the palkhi.
'Entire Pimpri Chinchwad wore a festive look today…It rained early morning, there were clouds but there was bright sunshine when the palkhi started its journey to Pune city ,' said Sapna Landge, a homemaker, who like thousands of others waited anxiously on the highway since early morning.
Devotees also distributed biscuits and bananas, others reached out to the warkaris with tea cups, water bottles and a breakfast of pohas and vada pavs.
In the Phugewadi-Dapodi area, a team of doctors had also set up a tent to examine and provide medicines to the warkaris.
Several housing societies hosted the 'dindis' by making arrangements of their meals.
'Like every year, our society hosted one 'dindi,' which had nearly 200 warkaris. We had prepared the meal early in the morning. All the society members contributed towards the expenses,' said Sanjay Tope, chairman of Goyal Residency, Kasarwadi.
The Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession reached Dapodi around 12 noon where the warkaris took rest and had lunch.
The procession then left for Pune City later in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palkhi procession which left Alandi this morning was given a warm welcome by Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commission Commissioner Shekhar Singh, along with Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinaykumar Choube, at Magazine Chowk in Dighi.
PCMC had set up a special welcome centre at Magazine Chowk, where Commissioner Singh and senior officers joined in the celebration by matching steps to devotional rhythms, officials said.
As a gesture of respect, PCMC presented the 'maanachi dindi' (honourable dindi) with eco-friendly cloth bags, seeds of indigenous trees, Tulsi saplings, information booklets, and first-aid kits.
The initiative reflected the civic body's commitment to both tradition and sustainability.
To mark the occasion, students and teachers from PCMC's Sant Tukaram Maharaj Santpeeth School performed soulful abhang recitals, adding a cultural and devotional layer to the proceedings.
The Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj palkhi procession proceeds from Dighi, Vishrantwadi to join the Sant Tukaram Maharaj palkhi procession at Wakdewadi.

Stray dog problem continues in city as citizens complain about dog bite instances despite rise in sterilisation
1 2 Pune: Stray dog problem continues in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, with citizens complaining of dog bite cases despite municipal corporations' claims of an increase in sterilisation over the past few years. Those commuting on city streets on bikes, especially at night, face significant dangers of being chased or attacked by stray dogs. Morning walkers and runners have also said that they are often the target of stray dogs. According to data from PMC and PCMC, dog bite cases went up in Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Cantonment limits in the past few years. In PMC limits, the cases increased from 16,500 in 2022 to 25,800 in 2024, while in PCMC, dog bite cases jumped to 28,999 in 2024-25 from 13,892 cases in 2021-22. Vikram Patil, a resident of Sinhagad Road, said he recently suffered injuries in his legs and hands after falling of his bike when some stray dogs chased him. There is a need to shift stray dogs to safer places, especially because their presence on streets is not safe, he said. Shweta Mahajan, a resident of Dhankawadi, questioned the effectiveness of animal birth control programmes as cases of dog bites are on the rise. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo A fresh order by the Supreme Court on shifting stray dogs from residential areas in Delhi can also be implemented in other cities, she said. Efforts are underway to keep stray dogs away from the airport area and runway. A series of inspections were carried out in the last two months around the airport area, prompting concentrated efforts by PMC, the Airports Authority of India, and defence authorities to overcome the menace. Several residents, including serving army officers and personnel from defence establishments, have expressed concern about the increasing number of stray dogs in and around the military and residential areas of the Pune Cantonment Board. The Dakshin Maharashtra and Goa Sub Area, which is the Local Military Authority (LMA), has recorded over 1,000 dog bite cases involving school children, family members of military personnel, and senior citizens in the last few months. Tushar Mehendale, a resident of Shivajinagar, said that the civic administration needs to take up the issue on priority. The authorities, along with experts, should check if dog feeding in open areas or in public places was aggravating the issue of attacks by stray dogs. Dedicated shelters should be established to overcome the menace before the situation turns critical. PMC officials said it had increased sterilisation from 13,148 in 2021-22 to 57,800 in 2023-24, while in PCMC, 3,300 cases of sterilisation were reported in 2024-25. Officials from PMC said that sterilisation has led to a drop in the number of stray dogs. The administration has taken measures to control the stray dog population and their vaccination. Regarding the rise in dog bite cases, officials said that even a scratch by a stray dog is reported as a dog bite, hence the numbers are high. In PCMC limits, between April and June 2025, 8,335 incidents of dog bites were reported. Activists and citizens attributed the surge partly to a slowdown in sterilisation after PCMC's contract with a private NGO expired in Dec last year. With no dedicated staffers, sterilisation activities were stalled until July 2025. "Earlier this month, we appointed 16 contractual staffers, including dog catchers and two veterinary doctors, tasked with sterilising 20 dogs per day," a senior PCMC official said. The civic body has also initiated the recruitment process for 15 additional staffers to raise the target to 40 sterilised dogs per day. Deputy municipal commissioner and head of PCMC's veterinary department, Sandeep Khot, said that under a special drive, over 16,000 dogs have been vaccinated against rabies in the past three years, and efforts are being scaled up. Vitthal Baral, a resident of Yashone Infinitee Housing Society in Punawale, said the civic body and the state govt should enforce the Supreme Court's stray dog management guidelines issued for Delhi NCR, in Pimpri Chinchwad as well. "In and around our society, stray dogs are everywhere, and we are even afraid to let our children play outside. Just last month, a dog became aggressive after delivering puppies near our premises. We have reported the matter to PCMC multiple times, but no one has come to address the problem," he said. A citizens' group, Pune Platform for Collaborative Response (PPCR), has written to civic chief Naval Kishore Ram to initiate a city-wide programme to manage stray dogs more effectively by formulating and implementing a comprehensive stray dog control programme, aligned with established judicial guidelines. Panchamrit Vs Charanamrit: Right Way To Prepare For Shri Krishna Janmashtami 2025
Shri Krishna Janmashtami 2025: This year, Janmashtami will be observed on Friday, August 15, 2025, marking the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. The most auspicious time for Nishita Puja, considered the divine moment of Lord Krishna's birth, will be from 12:04 AM to 12:47 AM on August 16, lasting 43 minutes. Other key timings as per Drik Panchang include: Ashtami Tithi Begins: 11:49 PM, August 15, 2025 Ashtami Tithi Ends: 09:34 PM, August 16, 2025 Chandrodaya Moment: 10:46 PM on Krishna Dashami Dahi Handi Celebration: Saturday, August 16, 2025 Parana Time (as per Dharma Shastra): After 09:34 PM, August 16, 2025 While the celebrations are filled with music, fasting, and devotion, the offering of Panchamrit or Charanamrit during puja holds deep spiritual meaning. Panchamrit vs Charanamrit: What's the Difference? Though the words are often used interchangeably, Panchamrit and Charanamrit differ slightly in purpose and tradition: Panchamrit: 1. Made from five key ingredients – milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar. 2. Symbolises purity, prosperity, and divine blessings. 3. Primarily prepared to bathe the deity (Abhishekam) during puja, and later offered as prasad. Charanamrit: 1. Usually made after the deity's Abhishekam, using the same Panchamrit, sometimes with added Tulsi leaves, cardamom, or dry fruits. 2. Known as 'the nectar of the Lord's feet' as it is sanctified during worship. 3. Consumed by devotees after touching the deity's feet during rituals. In short: Panchamrit is the offering, Charanamrit is the blessing. Correct Way to Make Panchamrit for Janmashtami Here's the traditional recipe followed by many temples and households: Ingredients: → 1 cup fresh cow's milk → ½ cup fresh curd (yogurt) → 1 tsp pure ghee → 1 tsp honey → 2 tsp powdered sugar (or mishri) → A few Tulsi leaves (optional) Method: → Take a clean silver, copper, or steel vessel. → Add milk, curd, ghee, honey, and sugar one by one. → Mix gently with a spoon, avoid vigorous stirring to maintain purity. → Add Tulsi leaves for a spiritual touch. → Offer the Panchamrit to Lord Krishna during the Nishita Puja Abhishekam. Once the deity's bathing ceremony is complete, the same Panchamrit transforms into Charanamrit, ready to be distributed as prasad. Devotional Significance Offering Panchamrit is more than just a ritual, each ingredient has spiritual symbolism: Milk: Purity and selflessness Curd: Prosperity and happiness Ghee: Knowledge and wisdom Honey: Sweetness and unity Sugar: Bliss and contentment By consuming Charanamrit, devotees believe they receive the divine blessings of Lord Krishna for health, prosperity, and spiritual growth. Janmashtami 2025: Accidentally Broke Your Fast? Here's What You Can Do
Last Updated: Janmashtami 2025: If the fast is broken accidentally, devotees can seek Lord Krishna's forgiveness, perform rituals, and continue the fast to receive its spiritual benefits The auspicious occasion of Janmashtami is one of the most spiritually significant festivals in Hindu culture. In 2025, the Janmashtami fast will be observed on Saturday, August 16. According to tradition, Lord Krishna was born in Mathura during the Dwapar Yuga on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha in the Bhadrapad month, when the moon was in Taurus and the day was Wednesday. Devotees across the country celebrate the birth of Laddu Gopal at midnight, observing a fast that is traditionally broken after sunrise the following day. During the Janmashtami fast, devotees can consume fruits, milk, curd, and water, while eating regular meals is prohibited. However, questions often arise about what should be done if the fast is accidentally broken. Is it still possible to gain the spiritual benefits of the fast? Religious scriptures suggest that if a devotee unintentionally eats food or breaks the fast, sincere repentance and prayers for forgiveness are required. Experts advise that in such situations, devotees should purify themselves and sit before Lord Krishna to pray for forgiveness. Mantras such as ' Mantraheenam Kriyaheenam Bhaktiheenam Janardan Yatpujitam Maya Deva Paripoorna Tadastu Me," ' Om Shri Vishnuve Namah Kshama Yachana Samarpayami," or chanting ' Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevay" at least five or eleven times using a Tulsi rosary are recommended. After praying, devotees should bow to Lord Krishna and request his mercy, acknowledging that the fast was broken unintentionally. Devotees can then choose to continue the Janmashtami fast. At midnight, the birth of Laddu Gopal is celebrated with rituals including bathing the idol with Panchamrit, offering Tulsi, butter, sugar candy, and Panjiri, performing Aarti, and distributing Prasad. Fruits from the Prasad can also be consumed by the devotee. The following morning, after taking a bath, devotees can perform Puja at home or in a Vishnu temple. Donations of yellow clothes, bananas, jaggery, gram, sugar candy, and gram flour laddus are encouraged. During this time, devotees should pray for the fulfilment of their wishes. Spiritual experts emphasise that Lord Krishna values the sincerity of devotees. If the apology is made with a pure heart and the fast is completed afterwards, the devotee's wish can still be fulfilled. This guidance is particularly intended for those who accidentally or unintentionally broke the Janmashtami fast, with no deliberate intent to violate the tradition. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
