Jagan Mohan Reddy says Andhra liquor scam front to protect Chandrababu Naidu

India Today22-05-2025
Former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy launched a sharp attack on the Andhra Pradesh government, dismissing the liquor scam allegations against his government. He claimed the alleged liquor scam during his tenure was a deliberate political ploy by the TDP to divert attention from Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's ongoing legal troubles.Speaking to the media at a press conference on Thursday, Jagan accused Naidu of orchestrating a campaign to harass officials and weaken the cases against the latter, particularly the liquor scam, for which Jagan said Naidu was currently out on bail. 'It is a fact that, in an attempt to weaken the cases against him, to implement a similar kind of operation in this term, Chandrababu Naidu has targeted YSRCP,' he said.advertisementJagan highlighted that of the 20 distilleries in the state, 14 received licences during different periods under Naidu's tenure as Chief Minister, while the remaining six were granted by previous governments, none under YSRCP rule. 'YSRCP didn't even employ one of the 20 distilleries,' he said, questioning, 'Who is the real scamster? Isn't Chandrababu Naidu the real scamster?'
Jagan further alleged that during Naidu's 2014-19 government, liquor sales were rampant, driven by permit rooms and belt shops, with sales constituting 3.84 per cent of the market, compared to 3.32 per cent under YSRCP. He also pointed to revenue per case of Indian Made Liquor (IML) and beer, which stood at Rs 2,623 in 2018-19 but rose to Rs 5,649 in 2023-24 under his administration, signalling more transparency and efficiency.Jagan described the liquor market during the TDP's rule as controlled by a private mafia, dominated by five distilleries responsible for 69 per cent of liquor production and supply between 2015 and 2019. He asserted that the Competition Commission of India had cleared the YSRCP's liquor policy, confirming it did not violate competition laws or restrict market access.advertisementPointing to new, unfamiliar liquor brands such as Sumo, Kerala Malt, Shot whisky, Bangalore whisky, Bangalore brandy, Old Club brandy, and Good Friends emerging under the current regime, Jagan questioned whether these were evidence of a private mafia thriving once again.Jagan also accused Naidu of rigging liquor tenders to favour a syndicate of five distilleries, increasing production capacity, and waiving privilege fees, resulting in a loss of Rs 5 crore to the state exchequer. 'His involvement is on paper, which makes the case strong,' he said.He also criticised the current government's targeting of individuals like Dhanunjay Reddy, retired Revenue Divisional Officer Krishna Mohan, and businessman Balaji Govindappa, alleging these moves were politically motivated. 'Just because Govindappa is linked to Bharti Cements and Jagan, he has been targeted,' Jagan said, noting that Govindappa is a core-time director of Vicat, Europe's sixth-largest cement company.Jagan lamented the arrest of senior officials, including a Director General-level Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, describing it as unprecedented and vindictive. He accused the government of harassing low-level employees and unrelated persons to create an illusion of action. He concluded by announcing June 4 would be observed as 'Betrayal Day' to expose the government's failures. 'There is an undeclared emergency going on in the state,' he said, promising to release detailed data on arrests, atrocities, and corruption cases.Must Watch

Mamata Banerjee hikes Durga Puja grant to Rs 1.10 lakh, slams BJP over criticism

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced an increase in the state government's financial grant to Durga Puja committees, raising it from Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.10 lakh. The announcement came during her address at a coordination meeting with Puja organisers in Kolkata, ahead of the festive 45,000 Durga Puja committees are registered across the state and will benefit from the increased grant, pushing the total estimated expenditure to over Rs 400 crore this year — a significant rise from last year's Rs 340 addressing the gathering, Banerjee defended the government's support for Durga Puja, taking a pointed dig at the opposition, particularly the BJP. 'Few people say Mamata didi doesn't allow Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja. They don't know these are regular affairs in households across Bengal,' she said. 'Some go to court and ask why we help those doing Puja. It's because so many people's bread and butter is involved with this.'The BJP, which has consistently opposed the grant, reiterated its criticism following the announcement. Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha called the grant a misuse of public funds. 'This is a burden on taxpayers as the money is coming from the government exchequer. Why doesn't Mamata Banerjee give the grant from the Trinamool fund or from her own pocket?' he said, accusing the Chief Minister of attempting to woo Hindu voters ahead of elections by funding Durga Puja and planning the construction of a Jagannath temple in addition to the grant hike, Banerjee instructed the state administration to enhance infrastructure and public services during the Puja period. 'Public announcement systems should be placed inside and outside pandals. The Transport Department must increase the frequency of buses and I will ask Metro authorities to run services continuously. We will also speak with the Railways to ensure more local trains are available,' she Puja immersions are scheduled for October 2, 3, and 4. The Chief Minister assured that police and administrative authorities will manage law and order throughout the celebrations.- EndsMust Watch

Rs 15L withheld, Himachal high court warns of financial emergency order

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh govt's admission that Rs 15.16 lakh payment to a contractor has been withheld since 2022 due to paucity of funds has prompted the high court to ask why an order pertaining to financial emergency in the state should not be passed. A bench, headed by Justice Ajay Mohan Goel, made the observations on Wednesday during the hearing of a petition filed by Shashi Thakur, a contractor of the public works department (PWD), Dharampur tehsil, Mandi district. Thakur approached the high court seeking directions to the department officials to release his pending payment of Rs 13.88 lakh along with interest at 18% per annum from the date of submission of the bill in 2022 until the date of actual payment. The high court initially issued a notice to the state govt on April 30 to file its reply, but it kept seeking more time. It was only when the court granted a last opportunity to the state govt that the department's Dharampur division executive engineer submitted his reply. "Due to paucity of funds with the state of HP exchequer, the payment of Rs 15.16 lakh cannot be disbursed to the petitioner to date," reads the executive engineer's reply. The official explained that during the financial year 2022-23, under the head of repair and maintenance, "tender amounting to Rs 2,376 lakh was awarded to various contractors against a budget provision amounting to Rs 357.96 lakh." He added that the petitioner contractor executed one work against this head of account. Taken aback by the reasoning, Justice Goel observed, "Taking into consideration the instructions that have been imparted to the court by the office of the advocate general, the deputy advocate general is directed to have instructions as to why the appropriate observations should not be made by the court in light of the provisions of Article 360 of the Constitution on the next date." The public works department's contractors' unions have been protesting from time-to-time since last year against the cash-strapped Himachal govt over the non-clearance of their payments running into crores. BOX: Article 360 of the Constitution Article 360 allows the declaration of emergency if the financial stability of a state is threatened. "If the President is satisfied that a situation has arisen whereby the financial stability or credit of India or any part of the territory thereof is threatened, he may by a proclamation make a declaration to that effect," underlines Article 360.
