BOSTON (AP) — Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit his first career grand slam during a five-run seventh inning and the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-4 on Wednesday night.
Elly De La Cruz, TJ Friedl and Santiago Espinal added RBIs for the Reds.
Nick Martinez (6-8) pitched 6 2/3 innings, yielding four runs off nine hits to help Cincinnati avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series.
Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox. Romy Gonzalez drove in two runs, including an RBI double in the seventh to pull Boston within 5-4.
Brennan Bernardino opened for Boston, pitching 1 1/3 innings before handing off to Jorge Alcala and then Chris Murphy. That trio held Cincinnati to three hits and no runs over 5 2/3 innings before Greg Weissert took over.
Weissert (2-3) got the final out of the sixth. But things fell apart in the seventh when Stephenson led off with a single, followed by Rece Hinds reaching on a fielder's choice and Gavin Lux walking to load the bases for Encarnacion-Strand. Weissert was pulled after surrendering five runs off four hits.
Earlier Wednesday, Abreu hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth to help Boston earn a 5-3 win in the completion of a game suspended by rain on Tuesday. Key moment
Abreu jumped on Martinez's changeup in the sixth, driving it over the right-field wall and into the Reds' bullpen beyond the reach of Hinds. It came after Hinds had made a catch against the same wall in the fifth, robbing Jarren Duran of an extra-base hit. Key stat
Encarnacion-Strand's grand slam was Cincinnati's sixth of the season. Up next
LHP Andrew Abbott (7-1, 1.79 ERA) will start for Cincinnati when it opens its three-game series at Philadelphia on Friday. RHP Lucas Giolito (4-1, 3.99) is scheduled to start for Boston at Washington.

Who will win Super Bowl 60? Top 10 NFL contenders ranked

Who has the best shot at hoisting the Lombardi Trophy this season? From powerhouse rosters with proven elite quarterbacks to dark horse contenders, we rank the top 10 teams most likely to win Super Bowl 60. Related: Best NFL running backs 2025, ranking 10 best running backs in NFL 10. Los Angeles Rams Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Sean McVay's offensive brilliance and veteran Matthew Stafford make the Los Angeles Rams dangerous. With Cooper Kupp gone, receiver Puka Nacua and running back Kyren Williams will be the offensive stars. Although they lack depth, the Rams have the pieces to be a great team this season and could go on an unlikely playoff run to shock the world. Advertisement Related: Best NFL coaches 2025 9. Washington Commanders Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images No rookie quarterback has ever started a Super Bowl game, but Washington's Jayden Daniels was one win away from accomplishing that feat. On paper, there was no chance that the Commanders should have gone as far as they did last year, and the same argument could be made for the upcoming season. But with Daniels leading the offense, he's already proven that nobody can put a ceiling on what this team can accomplish. Cincinnati Bengals Credit: Sam Greene / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images The Cincinnati Bengals finished last season red hot, winning their final five games. However, they did not make the playoffs. When healthy, the Bengals have one of the most unstoppable offenses in the league with the dynamic duo of Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase. The problem, of course, is the Bengals' defense, which has proven to be among the worst in the league. But Burrow can simply outscore opponents, as he finished first in yards and touchdowns for quarterbacks last season. Cincinnati's offensive upside gives them a shot to win every game they play. Green Bay Packers Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images Jordan Love has quickly emerged as a legitimate franchise quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, and they have a prolific offense with Josh Jacobs out of the backfield. While they lack some pieces on defense, there is no denying the potential this group has. They put up a fight against the eventual champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round last season, and with another year of experience under his belt, there's a chance Love could get over the playoff hump. 6. San Fransisco 49ers Credit: Kyle Terada-Imagn Images With statistically the easiest regular season schedule in the league, there is no doubt the San Francisco 49ers will be back in the playoffs after a disappointing season. While they lack the same depth they had during their 2023 Super Bowl appearance, if Christian McCaffrey and Brandon Aiyuk return from their injuries without losing a step, they will be a huge threat in the NFC for another year. Detroit Lions Credit: Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images After an outstanding regular season, the top-seeded Detroit Lions had a disappointing playoff showing, losing to the Commanders in the Divisional Round. They have all the pieces to win it this year, with immense talent on both sides of the ball. They are arguably the most talented team in the league, but are yet to prove they can win when it matters come playoff time. The return of Aidan Hutchinson from injury should help, so the Lions will be a marquee team to monitor as they try to bounce back from coming up short. Advertisement 4. Kansas City Chiefs Credit: Denny Medley-Imagn Images Given that the Kansas City Chiefs have made the Super Bowl in five of the last six seasons, winning three of them, it feels wrong to count out Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid. Their playoff success and consistency is undeniable, which makes it wrong to say they won't have a shot once again. But Travis Kelce is slowing down, and while still productive, he's no longer as dominant week to week. Their wide receiver room is still unproven and has dealt with inconsistency, putting an overbearing burden on Mahomes. But if anyone can carry a team, it's Mahomes, so nobody would be shocked to see this team make another run. Related: Best NFL tight ends 2025, ranking 10 best NFL tight ends right now 3. Buffalo Bills Credit: Mark Konezny-Imagn Images Led by last year's MVP Josh Allen at quarterback and a top-tier defense, there is no argument against the Buffalo Bills being a legitimate contender. Plain and simple, they are among the elite teams in the league. But the Bills have an issue come playoff time that they seemingly cannot fix: Mahomes. The Bills have lost to the Chiefs in the playoffs four of the past five seasons, with two of those losses coming in the AFC Championship Game. Baltimore Ravens Credit: Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images With Lamar Jackson as your quarterback and Derrick Henry out of the backfield, anything less than a Super Bowl appearance is disappointing. With a top roster on both sides of the ball, the Baltimore Ravens came up just short, losing to the Bills by two points in the Divisional Round last season in heartbreaking fashion. Baltimore has everything it needs to win this year's Super Bowl, but similar to Buffalo's issue with the Chiefs, they just need to execute when it truly matters. Related: Best NFL pass rushers 2025, ranking 10 best edge rushers 1. Philadelphia Eagles Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images The reigning Super Bowl champions only got better this offseason. The Eagles addressed their need at linebacker by selecting Jihaad Campbell in the first round, and have a well-rounded roster with stars on both sides of the ball. Saquon Barkley, the engine of the offense, will look to build on his historic season out of the backfield, and if he stays healthy, the Eagles could be unstoppable. Wimbledon: Ben Shelton is 1 game away from winning when his match is suspended because of darkness

Associated Press LONDON (AP) — Two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Ben Shelton's second-round match at Wimbledon was suspended because of fading light with him a game away from beating Rinky Hijikata on Thursday night. The 10th-seeded Shelton was about to serve for the match while leading 6-2, 7-5, 5-4 when action was halted at No. 2 Court, which does not have a roof or artificial lights. Shelton, a 22-year-old American, had just held three match points in the previous game, up 5-3 and love-40 as Hijikata served. But the 87th-ranked Australian grabbed the next five points in a row to extend the contest. Play was stopped at 9:30 p.m. They will resume on Friday. The left-handed, big-serving Shelton reached the fourth round at the All England Club a year ago. He made it to the semifinals at the 2023 U.S. Open and the 2025 Australian Open. ___ AP tennis: in this topic

Celtics pursuit in Damian Lillard calms down for one major reason

Damian Lillard will have an opportunity to choose any team he wants after leaving the Milwaukee Bucks. According to reports, the Boston Celtics have some interest, and it makes plenty of sense. Whether they view him as a star instantly when he returns from his injury, or someone they can pair with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown in certain sets, there's reason to believe that Lillard would be a great fit. Advertisement He isn't the best defender, which doesn't exactly fit the Celtics, but outside of that, he'd be a nice addition. It won't be easy for the Celtics to land him, with recently outlining what it would take for the Celtics to pick him up in free agency. It's also important to note that Lillard will be sidelined for much of next season due to his Achilles injury. 'The Celtics are currently slightly above the second apron with their projected payroll, but more tweaks to the roster are being explored per sources. Those inevitable tweaks will ultimately reduce Boston's payroll and salaries in a season where spending big into the tax doesn't make sense when Tatum is sidelined. 'While Boston remains above the second apron, they can only offer the veteran's minimum exception. However, as long as the Celtics get and stay under the second apron (via other moves), the door would open technically to Boston using the taxpayer mid-level exception ($5.7 million). Whether Boston would want to offer that money to Lillard is an open question, since giving him that deal would make getting under the luxury tax line this season that much more challenging (Boston is already $20 million over the tax line with the current roster),' they wrote. They're already over $20 million over that tax line with the current roster, per MassLive, and adding Lillard would only add to that. However, they can get creative, so it's possible that this could work.
