The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport returns unchanged from last year. Despite a 2020 refresh, it hasn't seen a full redesign since its 2011 debut. Its last updates in 2024 added a Trail Edition (which returns this year), free limited maintenance, a new SEL trim, and rear seat alert.What We Think
Mitsubishi's most affordable model, the Outlander Sport, is a compact SUV that fits well in tight urban spaces and offers easy maneuverability for city dwellers. It's one of the brand's longest-running models, but although its size and price are appealing, there are notable drawbacks that limit its overall appeal.
Styling-wise, it still carries the familiar Mitsubishi design language, and the available Trail Edition adds rugged touches for a more adventurous look. Mitsubishi also sweetens the deal with two years of complimentary limited maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs.
Unfortunately, the Outlander Sport shows its age. The cabin design feels dated, materials are basic, and lower trims are especially sparse on modern tech and comfort features. Fuel efficiency is unimpressive for the class, and safety ratings lag behind competitors.
For shoppers in this price range, it's worth cross-shopping alternatives like the Toyota Corolla Cross and Honda HR-V, which offer better refinement, more features, and stronger safety credentials. Top-Ranked Competitors: MotorTrend Tested
The Outlander Sport offers two engine choices. Lower trims come with a 2.0-liter inline-four making 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, while higher trims upgrade to a 2.4-liter engine with 168 hp and 167 lb-ft. All-wheel drive comes standard across the lineup.
Not that we've needed to, but it's been a few years since we've tested the Outlander Sport. A 2018 model with the larger engine sprinted to 60 mph in an unimpressive 8.5 seconds. A 2015 Outlander Sport with the smaller engine was even slower, needing 9.0 seconds to hit 60 mph.
In comparison, the 2026 Corolla Cross comes with a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 169 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel-drive models go from 0 to 60 mph in a decent 8.4 seconds, while all-wheel-drive versions lag behind at 9.3 seconds. MPGs and Range
Both engines get similar fuel economy. The Outlander Sport returns 23/29 mpg city/highway with the 2.0-liter engine and as much as 411 miles of range. With the bigger 2.4-liter mill, highway mileage drops to 28 mpg, and the Mitsubishi can go up to only 395 miles.
The Corolla Cross gets notably better fuel economy, which ins't a surprise given that it's a Toyota. It returns 31/33 mpg with FWD and 29/31 mpg with AWD. It's also available with an even more efficient hybrid powertrain. Safety Ratings and Features

Features included with the base model consist of a 7.0-inch touchscreen and a single USB port. An 8.0-inch infotainment interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is unlocked with the trim just above the entry-level grade. A wireless phone charger is not available with any model.
Sound System
The base model is outfitted with a four-speaker system. All other grades receive a six-speaker setup.
Available Upgrades
The Outlander Sport can be equipped with heated front seats, pushbutton start, and universal garage door opener. Available upscale styling touches include leather-trimmed upholstery and racy red stitching on the parking brake lever, steering wheel, and shifter. Value
Standard Features
The Outlander Sport offers the benefits of a city car, namely small dimensions and decent fuel economy. It's also very affordable. Most of the features buyers want are standard on models above the entry-level trim, though.
Recommended Trim
The Trail Edition offers the most personality. It's standard with all-wheel drive and also scores the leather-trimmed interior and red stitching, as well as a hood protector and front, rear, and side protectors from the Trail package.

Tesla Cybertrucks Wanted By Air Force As Missile Targets
The U.S. Air Force is looking to buy two Tesla Cybertrucks for use as targets for precision munitions during testing and training. The service says it needs these vehicles for this purpose specifically because of the prospect of unspecified adversaries driving around in them in the future. The Cybertrucks are among 33 target vehicles the Air Force Test Center (AFTC) is looking to acquire and have delivered to the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico, according to contracting documents recently posted online. WSMR is run by the U.S. Army, but the Air Force has a significant presence there. There are no name-brand requirements for the other sedans, bongo trucks, pickups, and SUVs, that are also on AFTC's shopping list. The primary intended use of all of the target vehicles is in support of U.S. Special Operations Command's (SOCOM) Stand Off Precision Guided Munitions (SOPGM) program and related training. SOPGM covers multiple special operations-specific air-launched precision-guided munitions, including multiple variants of the AGM-114 Hellfire, the AGM-176 Griffin missile, the GBU-69/B Small Glide Munition (SGM), and the GBU-39B/B Laser Small Diameter Bomb (LSDB). The explicit requirement for the Cybertrucks – which do not need to be in running condition, but do need to be able to roll towed behind another vehicle – requires a formal sole-source justification, a redacted copy of which is among the documents that AFTC has shared online. 'On 13 February 2025, market research was conducted to assess the competition for the Tesla Cybertruck by evaluating its design, materials, impact resistance, and innovative technologies. The study revealed that the Cybertruck's aggressively angular and futuristic design, paired with its unpainted stainless steel exoskeleton, sets it apart from competitors typically using painted steel or aluminum bodies,' the justification document explains. 'Additionally, its 48V electrical architecture provides superior power and efficiency, a feature that rivals are only beginning to develop. Extensive internet searches and industry outreach by [redacted] found no vehicles with features comparable to those of the Cybertruck.' More importantly, '[redacted] intends to uses [sic] specific Tesla manufactured vehicles for target vehicle training flight test events. In the operating theatre it is likely the type of vehicles used by the enemy may transition to Tesla Cyber trucks [sic] as they have been found not to receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact,' it adds. 'Testing needs to mirror real world situations. The intent of the training is to prep the units for operations by simulating scenarios as closely as possible to the real world situations.' The document does not elaborate on the 'operating theatre' or 'the enemy' in question, and TWZ has reached out to the Air Force for more information. Tesla effectively eliminated its public relations department years ago, but we have also reached out to its investor relations department for comment. As of this spring, an estimated 46,000 Cybertrucks have been sold to date, though the exact number is unclear. Currently, Tesla only offers Cybertrucks for sale in North America, though examples have been exported elsewhere in the world. Tesla did announce in April that it was planning to start direct sales in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar before the end of the year. Without more context, it is hard to say what may have prompted the belief that U.S. adversaries might soon be driving Cybertrucks. It is worth noting that the primary targets for SOCOM's SOPGM arsenal, at least as they are publicly known, have been terrorists and militants, especially ones riding in cars and trucks, in the Middle East, South and Central Asia, and parts of Africa. The Cybertruck's windows and side panels have been shown to be bullet-resistant, stopping subsonic pistol caliber rounds, something that was heavily touted with the vehicle was first unveiled in 2019. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has described the vehicle, which has a retail price starting at around $80,000, as being 'apocalypse-proof' in the past. At the same time, the Cybertruck has been dogged by recalls, controversies, and criticism over its actual performance, features (or lack thereof), safety issues, build quality, ownership terms of service, and more. Multiple companies are now offering Cybertrucks with add-on armor and other features aimed at prospective law enforcement, military, and private security customers. There have been some sales of Cybertrucks to law enforcement agencies, including the Dubai Police. The U.S. State Department made headlines earlier this year over a possible purchase of Cybertrucks, a plan it subsequently said had been shelved indefinitely. How and where Kadyrov, who the U.S. government and others have sanctioned, acquired the vehicles is unclear. He later claimed that Tesla had remotely disabled at least one of them. Over 300,000 step stools sold at Target, Walmart, and Home Depot part of safety recall
A nationwide recall has been issued for a kitchen step stool due to safety concerns. Last week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Dorel Home Furnishings Inc. announced a recall for over 300,000 Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Steppers after receiving 34 reports of the step stool breaking off, including two incidents that resulted in head injuries. The step stool features one small step before reaching a larger platform to stand on, which is protected by a safety bar. However, the bar has been discovered to detach or break while being used, which can create an injury risk for users. The recall applies to the model numbers 11349WHG1E, 11349GRN1E, 11349NVY1E, 11349WHG2, 11349GRN4, 11349GRN12, 11349WHG12C, 11349WHG12W, 11349WHG4F, and 11349CBWH4T, which were sold at Target, Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, and BJ's Wholesale Club stores nationwide. Affected step stools were also available for purchase online at and from February 2021 through July 2025 for anywhere between $56 and $70. Customers are urged to stop using the safety bar on the step stool and to keep the item away from children. They are also asked to contact Dorel to receive a free repair kit, which will include a sliding locking mechanism that attaches to the safety bar to prevent breaking or detaching. In addition to the repair kit, customers will also be sent installation instructions and a warning label to be placed on the step stool. The recall comes following Ford's recent recall of 312,120 U.S. vehicles over a brake assist defect that may increase stopping distance and crash risk. The recall covers certain 2025 Lincoln Navigator, F-150, Expedition, Bronco, and Ranger models due to a potential Electronic Brake Booster failure, which can cause loss of power brake assist while driving or using Advanced Driver Assistance Systems features. The issue stemmed from the EBB motor's sensitivity to voltage disturbances. If a voltage drop occurs and then recovers, a current surge may exceed the system's limits, shutting down the motor. This can trigger warning lights, messages in the instrument cluster, and audible alerts, along with noticeable changes in brake pedal feel. As of July 11, Ford was aware of 37 warranty claims and one low-speed crash potentially related to this issue, but no reports of injuries or fires. The affected vehicles span several popular 2025 models. Asking Eric: Friend's erratic driving causes concern
Dear Eric: My friend and I are in our mid-70s. We participate in several activities together — a book club, a continuing education class, et cetera. We often carpool together. I have begun to be very alarmed about my friend's driving habits. She brakes unexpectedly, veers across the center line and seems quite distracted. I'm more and more reluctant to get in a car that she is driving, as I actually think I might be in danger.
