Beloved German wine returns to local market

Malaysian wine enthusiasts can now get a taste of German heritage as the renowned Blue Nun brand returns to our shores.
Collaborating with importer and sole distributor Luen Heng F&B Sdn Bhd (LHFB), the brand's relaunch featured a selection of delightful whites, vibrant reds and sparkling editions.
Held at Kampai KLCC, the event also unveiled a distinctive new drink designed to captivate both loyal customers and a new generation of wine enthusiasts.
The new Blue Nun Chill Red is in response to global demand for lighter reds with a distinctive profile.
It has a delicate light red hue and smooth, mouth-filling finish.
The 150 guests in attendance were also privy to the Blue Nun 24K Gold Edition.
'Blue Nun is constantly evolving, striving to meet our consumers' expectations by breaking traditional wine conventions,' said Blue Nun brand manager Clarys Doumenjou-Larroque.
'Our 2025 releases are a celebration of both innovation and our enduring commitment to excellence,' she said.
Created in 1921 by H. Sichel Sohne, the century-old brand from Mainz has roots dating back to 1857.
The brand experienced dramatic growth from the 1950s through the 1980s.
Other Blue Nun choices include the Authentic White, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Merlot, Eiswein and Blue Nun Pink Rosé.
The Authentic White is aromatic and fruity with aromatic apple notes, giving it a refreshing acidity; while Gewürztraminer has a rich yellow hue with the aromas of roses and vanilla, perfect for white meat and spicy cheese.
As for the Merlot, the full-bodied red wine is smooth, with fruity notes of blackcurrant and spicy plum flavour.
Those with a sweet-tooth will probably enjoy the Blue Nun Eiswein as the ice wine has a distinctive sweetness from peach with apple and lemon notes on the palate.
It is made from grapes that are picked at -7°C or colder.
'Blue Nun is an established wine brand and we are happy to import such fine wines for the Malaysia market,' said LHFB managing director Datuk Kenneth Soh.
Also present at the launch were French wines and spirits exporter Les Grands Chais de France Group owner Laurence Helfrich, key area director Maxime Boureille, South-East Asia country manager Linlin Heckly, marketing manager Solène Schneider, LHFB senior marketing general manager Teong Hooi Min and senior brand manager Erica Yap.
The full range will be officially available in stores starting September 2025.

Last month, Baidu announced a similar agreement with Uber in Asia and the Middle East as it seeks to take pole position in the competitive autonomous driving field both at home and abroad. Lyft and Baidu said Monday (Aug 4) that "in the following years" the fleet of Apollo Go driverless cars will be expanded to thousands of vehicles across Europe. They did not specify which other countries the cars would be deployed in, and it was not clear how long it might take to gain regulatory approval for the initial deployment. Driverless taxis are already on some roads with limited capacity in the United States and China, most notably in the central city of Wuhan, where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas. Their reach is spreading, with Shanghai's financial district Pudong recently announcing a batch of permits for multiple companies to operate robotaxis. China's tech companies and automakers have poured billions of dollars into self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving the new battleground in the country's cutthroat domestic car market. Baidu is not alone among Chinese companies in searching to expand its foothold abroad. Its rival WeRide is also active in the Gulf region, and in January announced it had been picked to lead a small pilot project in Switzerland. another Chinese company, said in May that it had signed a deal to launch its self-driving taxis on Uber in "a key market in the Middle East later this year". San Francisco-based Lyft in April said it had agreed to buy German taxi app Freenow, planting a flag in the European market. BUDAPEST: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban promised that the return of his 'dear friend' Donald Trump as US president would usher in a new 'golden age'. But trade unionist Zoltan Laszlo says Hungary's auto industry has seen the opposite as the United States announced new tariffs, with order cancellations and workflow disruptions marking employees' day-to-day experience. With tariff rates rising from 2.5 percent before Trump's return to around 25 percent and finally to 15 percent, the 'American tariff slalom' has caused nothing but chaos in the car industry, said Laszlo, who represents workers at Mexican automotive parts manufacturer Nemak's Hungarian plant. In recent years, Hungary and neighbouring Slovakia have become European manufacturing hubs for global car brands seeking lower labour costs, including British Jaguar Land Rover, German Mercedes and Japanese Suzuki. But due to the export-oriented nature of their automotive sectors, catering in part to the US market, they are among those EU nations hardest-hit by the latest tariffs slated to kick in on August 7. Despite hailing Trump's comeback and visiting him twice at his Mar-a-Lago luxury estate last year, Orban -- his closest EU ally -- was not spared the pain. - Distress calls - Neither were more favourable conditions extended to Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, whose country is the world's largest automobile manufacturer per capita. According to analyst Matej Hornak, the incoming tariffs won't bode well. He warns of a drop in exports amounting to 'several hundred million euros' and the loss of '10,000-12,000' jobs in the sector. After the announcement of the EU-US trade deal, Orban was quick to apportion blame to EU Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, saying Trump 'ate' her 'for breakfast'. But in April, the mayor of the Hungarian city of Gyor, whose strong economic growth is closely linked to its car manufacturing plants, had already warned of possible cutbacks and layoffs. For the city, which is home to various global brands and more than a dozen different parts and component suppliers including Nemak, the fresh tariffs are a disaster. As one of the biggest employers in Hungary, German carmaker Volkswagen alone provides jobs for more than 12,000 people. Its main engine factory in Gyor produces some Audi-branded vehicles directly for the US market. The Hungarian government has said that it is still assessing the impact of the tariff rates, vowing that upcoming business deals with Washington could mitigate the negative effects of Trump's 'America first' policy. - Difficult compromise - But more headwinds are ahead for Hungary and Slovakia, said Brussels-based geopolitical analyst Botond Feledy. 'When it comes to European dealmaking, Trump now prioritises more geopolitically influential figures -- the main option for smaller nations such as Slovakia and Hungary is to join forces with others,' he told AFP. But the 'aggressive posturing' in the same vein of Trump's protectionist policies both countries adopted in recent months have isolated them among fellow EU countries, making compromises difficult, the expert added. Moreover, the stakes are high for Orban, whose 15-year rule has recently been challenged by former government insider-turned-rival Peter Magyar ahead of elections scheduled for next spring. 'Dissatisfaction with the standard of living has made voters more critical, which is also reflected in the popularity ratings of the governing parties,' said economist Zoltan Pogatsa, adding that 'Hungary has been in a state of near stagnation for many years now'. This year's economic 'flying start' touted by Orban did not materialise, with the government further lowering the country's growth goal from the initial 3.4 to one percent. 'So far, Trump's second presidency has only impacted the Hungarian economy through his tariff policy, which has been negative,' Pogatsa added. At the Nemak plant, a recent warning strike has led to management promising to sort out the unpredictable work schedules caused by the tariff changes, which were 'unhealthy and physically unbearable' and made 'family and private life become incompatible with work', said Laszlo. - AFP

ROME, Italy: Across Europe, and sometimes even the world, a growing number of hard-right politicians, activists, and online influencers have discovered that getting the attention of Elon Musk is a powerful shortcut to amplifying their voices. Consider the case of a German politician whose party has been flagged as extremist by her country's own domestic intelligence service. For years, her reach was limited. However, on the days Musk liked or replied to her posts, her audience on X (formerly Twitter) leapt from a steady 230,000 to more than 2.2 million. Soon after, she guided her party to its strongest showing at the ballot box. In Britain, an anti-immigration activist who was once banned from Twitter and even jailed for contempt of court found new life after Musk reinstated him in late 2023. Since his return, he has mentioned or tagged Musk more than 120 times, earning nearly one million new followers. What once looked like the end of his career in public life has instead turned into a revival, thanks in no small part to the billionaire's willingness to grant him space on the platform. Even minor figures have benefited. A little-known influencer from Cyprus, who entered politics with little more than a fixation on Musk, suddenly emerged as a surprise member of the European Parliament. Before his win, his social-media goal seemed simple: to meet and embrace Musk. He not only got his hug but also a political boost. On days Musk engaged with his posts, his views skyrocketed from about 300,000 to nearly 10 million. Although Musk has soured in Washington politics—he resigned from President Donald Trump's advisory council this year and more recently has traded insults with Trump as he pursues his own political ambitions—his power on X has only grown. The platform he bought for US$44 billion has become his personal stage, giving him the ability to boost allies, undermine critics, and shape political conversations across borders. An Associated Press analysis of public data shows just how influential his digital megaphone has become in Europe. Reviewing more than 20,000 posts by 11 far-right figures in six countries, AP found that Musk's interactions often triggered surges in attention and followers for accounts aligned with nationalist, anti-immigration, or anti-progressive agendas. Musk himself has engaged with these accounts nearly 190 times since taking over Twitter, while European influencers have tagged or replied to him close to a thousand times. The results, European lawmakers warn, are troubling. "Every alarm bell needs to ring," said Christel Schaldemose, a vice president of the European Parliament who focuses on election integrity and digital regulation. She and others see Musk's behavior not simply as casual banter but as a form of political intervention—foreign interference of a kind Europe has long feared from Russia or China, now emanating from Silicon Valley. The numbers are striking. One influencer who had about 120,000 followers when Musk purchased Twitter in October 2022 grew to more than 1.2 million by early 2025. Seven other European accounts recorded six-figure jumps in the same period. While other forces, including national politics, certainly contributed, AP's findings suggest that Musk's attention can be the decisive spark that propels local actors onto the global stage. Musk himself frames his role differently. Declaring himself a "free speech absolutist," he has repeatedly argued that X should serve as an open forum for ideas, no matter how controversial. Yet critics point out that the platform is not neutral—it amplifies Musk's speech and those he chooses to elevate. Indeed, his own account has become the single most dominant presence on X. Since his acquisition, Musk's followers have more than doubled to more than 220 million, eclipsing every other account. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi saw a 25 percent jump over the same period, adding 21 million followers. Donald Trump's account grew by 12 million, or 14 percent. Pop star Taylor Swift managed just three million new followers, a three percent gain. None of them come close to Musk's relentless climb. The effect is a further concentration of digital power in the hands of one individual. Musk now commands the largest audience on a platform used by hundreds of millions worldwide, with the ability to direct attention at will. For governments, regulators, and voters, the question is no longer whether Musk matters in European politics. The question is how much—and whether democracies can adapt to a world where the world's richest man, through a single platform, can tilt debates, boost movements, and disrupt political balances that have held for decades.
