Family-owned Scottish distillery wins 8 awards at prestigious competition

Judged by panels of some of the industry's most respected experts, Graeme Mackeddie, master blender at MSWD, said the awards have helped solidify the distillery's reputation for producing Scotch whisky of exceptional quality.
He said: 'I'm incredibly proud of the recognition we've received at the IWSC this year across both our Old Perth and Mac-Talla ranges.
'These awards are a real reflection of the care and control we have over every stage of the whisky-making process at Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers.
'From maturation at Aberargie Distillery, to blending, bottling and final dispatch, all carried out on site expertly by our experienced team.'

The standout performer at the 2025 Scotch whisky judging results for MSWD was Mac-Talla Mara Cask Strength, which impressed judges with its balance and complexity, securing Gold.
The panel, featuring leading industry names including Dawn Davies MW, Becky Paskin, and Emma Walker, praised the expression's 'vibrant nose' and 'zesty finish'.
Also taking Gold was Mac-Talla Strata 15-Year-Old, praised for its tropical fruit character and layered smoky finish.

But the elected member for Renfrew North and Braehead has been accused of "hyperbolic word salad" on an issue that was settled almost two years ago. In September 2023, the SNP administration confirmed it was not considering the introduction of an LEZ in Paisley or any other part of Renfrewshire at a full council meeting. Councillor McGuire, who defected from Labour to Nigel Farage's Reform in June, said: "Scotland's four main cities already have LEZs in place and their experience should be a warning. "These schemes have acted as little more than cash cows, generating income for councils while hitting those who can least afford it. "People on the lowest incomes, who are far more likely to drive older vehicles, have been penalised simply for trying to get to work, take their children to school or care for relatives. "Renfrewshire must have no part in this. A congestion charge or LEZ in our towns would be a hammer blow to local households and businesses. We are a working community that depends on accessible, affordable transport. "Many residents travel across Renfrewshire for work, education, and caring responsibilities, while small enterprises rely heavily on vans and cars to serve customers and move goods. "Imposing extra charges on them is not just unreasonable, it risks undermining our local economy and making it harder for people to live and work here." He added: "The SNP-led Renfrewshire Council must act now to rule out – clearly, unequivocally and permanently – ever introducing either a congestion charge or a low emission zone in our area. "Residents deserve certainty, not the constant threat of new charges hanging over them." Councillor Jim Paterson, SNP convener of the planning and climate change policy board, claimed Councillor McGuire was "trying to raise his profile" with the comments. The elected member for Renfrew South and Gallowhill said: "Another day, another fabricated outrage from Councillor McGuire. "The position of the SNP administration and indeed Councillor McGuire on this issue was settled in 2023 when the Conservative group called on the council to rule out establishing any form of LEZ in Paisley and wider Renfrewshire for the duration of this council term. "The SNP position along with a Labour amendment was agreed then by the vast majority of councillors which stated that the council would not consider the introduction of a low emission zone (LEZ/ULEZ) in Paisley or any other parts of Renfrewshire. That position remains unchanged. "Councillor McGuire, like his newfound political hero Nigel Farage, may like to trade in misinformation but to imply that there has been any change to the agreed position of 2023 is just nonsense and to suggest there is a 'constant fear' hanging over residents is just hyperbolic word salad from a councillor desperately trying to raise his profile to secure the top spot in his party's internal list for Holyrood 2026."

Scotch whisky veteran behind Isle of Harris Distillery exits
Isle of Harris Distillers, which produces The Hearach single malt and Isle of Harris gin, said managing director Simon Erlanger had been 'instrumental in the success of the business since its inception' as it announced he would retire next month. Asked by The Herald about the outcome of a recent redundancy programme at the distillery, which was implemented amid tough trading conditions for the sector, a spokeswoman said today that 18 staff had 'chosen to take voluntary redundancy earlier this year, with the company supporting them to find employment elsewhere'. Ron MacEachran, executive chairman at Isle of Harris Distillers, said today: 'We remain confident, notwithstanding the challenges and significant change being managed by the company and the spirits industry generally, that Isle of Harris Distillers will continue to grow both domestically and internationally.' The multi-million-pound distillery project on the Isle of Harris was the vision of US-born musicologist Anderson Bakewell. Read more Mr Erlanger, a former sales and marketing director of Scotch whisky distiller Glenmorangie, said today: 'Very few have the chance to establish a new Scotch whisky distillery, let alone one with such a special purpose. I am immensely proud of what this team has created and I am confident that the foundations we have built will see the distillery fulfil its founding mission. 'I'd like to thank Anderson Bakewell for entrusting me with this project and am grateful for the support and guidance from the board over the years. Whilst excited to spend more time with the family, I still intend to stay connected to this wonderful industry.' The Isle of Harris Distillers board said: 'We would like to announce that Simon Erlanger is retiring as managing director of Isle of Harris Distillers at the end of September after 14 years with the company. 'Simon has been instrumental in the success of the Business since its inception. Under his leadership, the distillery has established two well-respected international spirits brands and has laid the foundations to achieve its purpose of providing multi-generational employment for the Isle of Harris. The board would like to thank Simon for all he has achieved and for his dedication to the company and the island. We wish him a long and happy retirement.' Mr MacEachran said: 'As is the nature of business, change provides us with an opportunity for renewed growth. Following Simon's departure, I will continue in my role of executive chairman, overseeing the business as it moves positively forward. The existing team's determination to build on the foundations created is being complemented by the addition of industry experts, who will support us as we begin this new phase of Isle of Harris Distillers' journey.' Expressing confidence in continued growth, Mr MacEachran said: 'Recent weeks have seen the Pink Ceilidh Bottle sell out in just 45 minutes, showing ongoing demand for the premium gin we produce here on the island. "Alongside this, we have recently successfully launched global travel retail products (The Hearach croft strength malt whisky and Isle of Harris gin tidal strength), allowing consumers to sample a taste of Harris in new and different ways. New listings also continue to be achieved in Scotland, London and further afield, while new product innovation continues on island.' In an interview with The Herald in 2017, Mr Erlanger said of Mr Bakewell: 'It was his vision to do something to stem that population decline [on Harris]. 'He didn't come from the [Scotch whisky] industry. It took someone from outside the industry to come up with the idea. He just had this feeling that distilleries tend to last for generations, rather than [being] short-term ventures.' Mr MacEachran said today: 'Moving forward, we remain focused on the provision of products and service of the highest quality to our ever-increasing consumers and customers, and to the company's long-term mission.'
