Florida State's Mirabel Ting wins 2025 Annika Award, given to college golf's Player of the Year

When Mirabel Ting first came to the United States, she felt alone.
She didn't have any friends. Her family was on the other side of the world in Malaysia. She started her college golf career at Augusta before transferring to Florida State, where she has spent the past two seasons.
Her lone goal coming to the U.S. to play college golf? "So I just tell myself, if I could just practice hard and be successful, one day, I'll be able to help out my family, my friends, and you know just what I'm trying to do is be successful and make everyone at home proud."
She has accomplished every bit of that this season.
On Tuesday, Ting was named the winner of the 2025 Annika Award presented by Stifel, given to the best female golfer in college golf. Ting is the first Annika Award winner from Florida State and also the first Annika Award winner from Malaysia.
Ting put together an incredible season playing on the same team as the No. 1 amateur in the world, Lottie Woad. Ting won five times this season in nine stroke-play starts, her worst finish being T-6. All season, she lost to only 10 players.
"Everyone on that trophy, they're all pretty successful and on the LPGA Tour," Ting said. "I'm just hoping to be like that as well one day. It's kind of cool to have my name on it."
With her Annika Award win, she also receives an exemption into the Amundi Evian Championship in France this summer.
Ting slowly rose up the World Amateur Golf Ranking this season, eventually giving Florida State coach Amy Bond the top two players in not only college golf but the world. While Woad remains No. 1 in WAGR, Ting has been the best player in college this year, and her peers took notice.
The winner of the Annika Award is selected by college golfers, coaches and members of the college golf media and has been handed out annually since the 2014 season.
Bond recognized her talent long before, though.
"She's probably the best ball striker we've ever had from start to finish, where it's like, see flag, hit flag," Bond said. "That's what she does. But the difference, especially from last year to this year, is definitely she's making a lot more putts. She's going to knock it inside of 15 feet 80% of the time.
"Her running joke with me is because I'm like, 'You got to practice your short game.' And she's like, 'Coach, why do I need to practice my short game when I hit 17 or 18 greens a round,' but the difference this year is that she's actually making those putts."
Around Christmas, Ting flew to Thailand to begin working with Kris Assawapimonporn, Jeeno Thitikul's longtime instructor. They worked mostly on putting – everything from set-up, to speed to green reading.
And those changes helped culminate the best player in college golf.
"She's goofy. She's got a good sense of humor. She likes to laugh," Bond said. "The biggest thing with her is she likes to have fun."

Huskers about to take off if Matt Rhule's third season goes according to form of his previous stops
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — It's Year 3 of the Matt Rhule era at Nebraska, the one the program has been pointing to since his hiring. The third season is where Rhule's previous college teams have made their biggest jumps, and the stage is set for the same to happen for the Cornhuskers. Dylan Raiola will be in his second year as the starting quarterback and his first full season with offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen. Veteran defensive coordinator John Butler enters his first full season running a unit ranked in the top 20 last year. The schedule is favorable. 'I believe we can do something special this year,' Raiola said. 'We'll find out pretty soon.' Rhule in 2023 took over a proud program a quarter-century removed from its heyday under Tom Osborne. The Huskers had won no more than five games in six straight seasons before Rhule arrived. His first team went 5-7 with five one-score losses. His second team ended a seven-year bowl drought and finished 7-6 with five more losses by eight points or less. At Temple, Rhule was 2-10 and 6-6 before going 10-4 in 2015 for the first of two straight double-digit win seasons. At Baylor, he was 1-11 and 7-6 before going 11-3 in 2019 with a Sugar Bowl appearance. 'You just look at what he's done in the past,' Raiola said, 'and all you can do is trust his process and see it works.' Huskers go as Raiola goes Raiola looks to build off a freshman season of ups and downs. In nine Big Ten games, he threw just seven touchdowns and was intercepted nine times. He should benefit from an improved offensive line and an upgrade at receiver. 'His leadership is outstanding, the play is fantastic,' Holgorsen said. 'He's making throws that I've never seen before, to be honest with you. He's in a good spot and ready for game day.' Who's the backup? The competition between Jalyn Gramstad and TJ Lateef for the backup quarterback's job continues to be one of the under-the-radar battles. Gramstad is going into his sixth year of eligibility and his second at Nebraska. He led Northwestern College (Iowa) to the NAIA championship in 2022 and was NAIA player of the year with another title-game appearance in 2023. He played a total of eight snaps last season, all in the opener against UTEP. Lateef, a freshman, was a three-star recruit out of Compton, California. He enrolled in January. Switch kicker Don't go to the concession stand or refrigerator when Archie Wilson lines up to punt. It could be very entertaining. The Australian freshman alternates between kicking right- and left-footed. A natural left-footed kicker, he grew up playing Australian rules football and went through the Prokick Australia program. Wilson said he had always tinkered with right-footed kicking but didn't get serious about it until three years ago when he had a minor injury to his left foot. A Prokick coach asked him to kick a couple balls with his right, and he nailed both. Switch punting can provide an edge because the ball spins differently depending on which foot it comes off, making it more difficult to field. Love of the gameLinebacker Javin Wright is a rare seventh-year player who is expected to be a major contributor. After enduring a run of health issues, he's all in for this season. He was able to trade in his No. 33 jersey for No. 0. Single-digit jerseys are awarded by vote of the team to players who show the most toughness and leadership. 'Javin's playing on borrowed time,' Rhule said. 'He had it taken from him. He's playing for the joy and passion of playing, so that's infectious to those guys.' Key Alabama football starter injured. Kalen DeBoer provides latest update on lead tailback

With less than two weeks until the season opener at Florida State on Aug. 30, Alabama football will be without a key starter for an indefinite amount of time. Early Sunday, coach Kalen DeBoer confirmed a report from Will Miller of Sports Illustrated that starting tailback Jam Miller had sustained an upper-body injury during the second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. "Jam Miller suffered an upper-body injury in Saturday's scrimmage and went in for a procedure on Saturday evening," DeBoer said in a press release. "Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined." Sports Illustrated's Miller reported late Saturday that the Crimson Tide running back was expected to miss multiple games, including the season opener at Florida State (2:30 p.m. CT, ABC). Citing Alabama sources, ESPN's Mark Schlabach also reported Sunday that Miller was expected to miss the Week 1 matchup in Tallahassee. Miller is Alabama's most experienced running back and was its leading rusher out of the backfield a season ago. The senior from Tyler, Texas, ran for 668 yards and seven touchdowns on 145 carries in 2024. In three years at Alabama, he's rushed for 1,092 yards on 219 carries. Miller had two touchdown runs in Alabama's 34-0 win over Missouri on Oct. 26, and a season-high 140 yards on 15 carries in the Week 2 win over South Florida on Sept. 7. His conference-high in yardage -- 84 yards, 28 carries -- came in Alabama's 28-14 win over Auburn, its fifth straight in the series. Miller also caught 16 passes for 155 yards last season, including a 16-yard catch and run in the first quarter of Alabama's 41-34 victory over Georgia on Sept. 28. With Miller sidelined, Alabama can look to sophomore Richard Young, a former four-star recruit from Florida who's been with the program since 2023. Young had 27 carries for 146 yards (5.4 AVG) and two touchdowns a season ago. The Crimson Tide also have sophomore Daniel Hill, who saw action in six games and went for 61 yards on 21 carries in 2024. Louisiana transfer Dre Washington is another option. Rennick Hendrickson Commits To Minnesota Duluth
Shattuck St. Mary's forward Rennick Hendrickson has committed to Minnesota Duluth, it was announced on Wednesday. A native of Minnetonka, Minn., Hendrickson played for Shattuck St. Mary's 16U AAA team last season, where he tallied 10 goals and 23 assists in 54 games. A 2008-born skater, Hendrickson — whose USHL rights are held by the Dubuque Fighting Saints — will likely play for them before making the jump to the NCAA to join the Bulldogs.
