The penultimate evening of Club World Cup group stage action saw four more fascinating games with some major scalps now heading home.
Here's what went down.

What happened? 📝
Daniel Svensson's first half strike, after great work from Jobe Bellingham, was enough to see Borussia Dortmund beat a disappointing Ulsan outfit and go through top of Group F.

In the other game, Mamelodi Sundowns put up an excellent fight against Fluminense but couldn't quite get it done. As it was, their 0-0 saw the Brazilian side go into the last 16 in second place.
Group E meanwhile was a much more fiery affair.
Monterrey hammered Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 with Nelson Deossa's first half strike going down as the goal of the tournament so far.
And that win saw the Mexican side leapfrog River Plate and go through in second place.
The Buenos Aires giants completely lost their heads late on in the game against Inter, losing 2-0 and having two men sent off.
Player of the Day 🔥
Monterrey's emphatic victory over Urawa was in no small part to German Berterame.

The Argentine striker netted his 24th and 25th goals of the campaign to send the Rayados into the last 16, where they'll play Borussia Dortmund.
Stat of the Day 📊
Mamelodi Sundowns may be heading home, but they do so as one of the tournament's standout names.
What this means 🤔
The last 16 bracket is almost completed.
As mentioned above, Borussia Dortmund take on Monterrey in Atlanta next Tuesday with the winner of that encounter playing the likely victor between Real Madrid and Juventus or Manchester City.
On the other side of the draw it's Inter who face Fluminense in a sweltering North Carolina on Monday. The winner of that game will play either Juventus or Manchester City from Group G and potentially Salzburg and Al Hilal from Group H.
What they said 🗣️

"The most important thing is we have got the job done. We have qualified. It was a game that was very tough in the first half. In the second half we controlled the game better. We controlled the space better and, after the red card [for Lucas Martinez Quarta], it was much easier for us." Cristian Chivu, Inter coach
"They are physically strong. Technically, they are good. We played the game that we wanted, that we had to play. Unfortunately, the [red card] did not allow us to reach the end with some chances... It's a shame, a shame for all these people who have come to support the team, that we could not give them the chance to continue." Marcelo Gallardo, River head coach
"We have played some of the most beautiful football in this tournament. The story of this game is the goal we didn't score in the first 20 or 25 minutes. But we kept the intensity and the quality. I'm so proud of my boys. I'm so proud of the club. " Miguel Cardoso, Mamelodi Sundowns coach
What's next? 👀
The group stage will conclude later this evening with four more games.

It's a direct shoot-out for first place between Juventus and Manchester City in Florida.
The other match in Group G sees Wydad and Al Ain hoping not to leave the tournament on zero points.
Then it's on to the final group with Real Madrid facing Salzburg with both sides on four points.
That leaves a slight glimmer of hope for Al Hilal, on two points, who play Mexican side Pachuca.

Inter Milan Head Coach Praises His Team After Clinical Club World Cup Win Vs River Plate: 'Team That Want To Be Dominant'

Inter Milan Head Coach Praises His Team After Clinical Club World Cup Win Vs River Plate: 'Team That Want To Be Dominant' Cristian Chivu praised Inter Milan's performance in a gutsy 2-0 win over River Plate in their final FIFA Club World Cup group-stage outing. Speaking to Sport Mediaset via FCInterNews, the 44-year-old hailed Inter's character and desire to dominate their opponents. Advertisement Things didn't start well for Inter in Group E. Indeed, they had to fight back to hold Monterrey to a 1-1 draw in a curtain-raising fixture. Furthermore, it required Lautaro Martinez and Valentin Carboni's late heroics to beat Urawa Red Diamonds on matchday two. However, the Nerazzurri saved the best for the last. Francesco Pio Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored in the second half to inspire Inter to a dominant win over River Plate. It's also worth noting that Marcelo Gallardo's side picked up two red cards after halftime. Nonetheless, it took nothing away from Inter's promising performance at Lumen Field. (Photo by) 'It was a real match,' Cristian Chivu said after the game. 'I'm glad because we managed to turn it around despite the struggles in the first half, where their intensity caught us a bit by surprise. Advertisement 'We managed to match their determination and character so we wouldn't get overrun by their style of play. 'Moreover, we found quality in our passing, played vertically, and occupied the pitch better. 'We achieved our goal of making it through to the next round. 'I'm happy for the players because it's not easy to go through such a long training camp, to always stay focused, and try to recover both physically and mentally,' he added. 'I see the desire to honor this tournament, and despite our difficulties, to deliver a dominant performance. 'That's what we did—they responded brilliantly, and I'm happy for everyone.' Advertisement Finally, he waxed lyrical about Pio Esposito, who scored in his first Club World Cup start. 'He worked hard for everyone. The team and I are happy for him. 'At the same time for what everyone managed to give – those who played, those who came off the bench, and even those who unfortunately didn't get to play but still gave their energy and desire to their teammates. 'The applause happened, and by now it's become a habit. 'That's the way it should be, and now he should treat everyone to dinner. 'Scoring your first goal in your first start, in a competition like this, it's a big deal.'

Manchester City squad audit: Pep Guardiola has ‘too many players' but who goes?

Having flirted with the idea of making Manchester City's squad bigger to help combat injuries, Pep Guardiola is sticking to his guns and wants to work with a relatively small group. The problem is that City have 32 players. 'We have a long squad, too many players,' he said on Sunday. 'We cannot go with 26 or 27 players this season because there would be more not playing. Advertisement 'Step by step, maybe a few players are going to move.' Kyle Walker, Jack Grealish, James McAtee and Kalvin Phillips are expected to go, and others will have to follow. But who? Ilkay Gundogan and John Stones had been linked with moves away, but say they are staying. Bernardo Silva was another who was seen as a potential departure, but he has been made captain. The Athletic takes a look at each member of the squad to determine their status. Ederson Age: 31 Contract expires: 2026 Had been expected to leave this summer after City cut last summer's £50million ($69m at current rates) asking price in half, although Guardiola said in June that he and fellow goalkeeper Stefan Ortega would be staying. And at the Club World Cup on Monday, Ederson told reporters, 'My head is staying at the club. It stays with the City. It gives me everything to go back to the Premier League again and try to win the Champions League as well.' Stefan Ortega Age: 32 Contract expires: 2026 Sources, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, say that the German could be tempted by the opportunity to become first choice at another Premier League or European club. Even if he stays for next season, he might not sign an extension and could be a free agent in 12 months. Marcus Bettinelli Age: 33 Contract expires: 2026 Has just signed a one-year deal to be the third-choice keeper but has spoken about being at City for 'the next couple of years'. Kyle Walker Age: 35 Contract expires: 2026 A bit like Joao Cancelo previously, Walker's time at City is clearly over, the only question that remains is where he will go. His loan move to Milan in January is not going to be extended but his exclusion from City's Club World Cup squad and Guardiola's brusque replies on the subject are enough to suggest there is no way back into his squad. Advertisement Rico Lewis Age: 20 Contract expires: 2028 A useful squad player, capable of playing at right-back or in midfield. 'When we play really good and control and drop the opponents in the final third, players can move in the small spaces and Rico is one of the best I have ever seen,' Guardiola told reporters after beating Nottingham Forest in April. Matheus Nunes Age: 26 Contract expires: 2028 Did well overall in the final months of last season as a stand-in right-back, although still capable of a gaffe. Probably not going to be first-choice on the right side of the defence, though, and certainly not in midfield. His departure would make sense if City get a right-back — but again, the numbers would not go down. Vitor Reis Age: 19 Contract expires: 2029 There is some talk of a loan move but he could be kept around as cover if one of the more senior centre-backs leaves. He has huge potential but is not yet ready for regular Premier League football, as a shaky performance in City's opening Club World Cup game suggested. Abdukodir Khusanov Age: 21 Contract expires: 2029 Joined in January and started to impress after a horror debut but then suddenly stopped featuring, with rumours suggesting City would have needed to pay a bonus to former club Lens had he kept playing. Closer to first-team readiness than Reis but will most likely be behind more senior defenders in August. Ruben Dias Age: 28 Contract expires: 2027 He is expected to open contract negotiations with City after the Club World Cup, suggesting there is no danger of him leaving this summer. There will be work to do when all parties sit around the table but there is no major rush. John Stones Age: 31 Contract expires: 2026 He intends to stay at City despite speculation, seemingly not from his end, about his future. Guardiola said at the end of February that Stones would be out for up to 10 weeks with a thigh problem but four months later, he is still not fit enough to start at the Club World Cup. There are no doubts about his ability but his availability is a lingering problem. Advertisement Manuel Akanji Age: 29 Contract expires: 2027 Suffered an adductor injury against Real Madrid in February, just as he was starting to build fitness, summing up a difficult season in which he often played with various physical problems. He has two years left on his contract, so contract talks should be in the offing. If he agrees, he is safe as houses. If not, he could move on sooner rather than later. Josko Gvardiol Age: 23 Contract expires: 2028 Voted City's player of the season and should be fixture in the team for years to come. Could play more at centre-back this season with Rayan Ait-Nouri on board, but it would be no surprise to see him at left-back, either in attacking areas or as part of a back three. Nathan Ake Age: 30 Contract expires: 2027 Another player badly affected by injuries last season. Sources say there is nothing particularly active regarding contract talks or transfers, perhaps due to doubts over his injury situation for City or any other club. But he counts as a homegrown player, is left-footed and never complains, so there is little rush to move him on. Rayan Ait-Nouri Age: 24 Contract expires: 2030 A new arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers who can add a fleet-footed presence high on the left. At Wolves, he excelled in attack as a wing-back, leaving some uncertainty over his defending. Nico O'Reilly Age: 20 Contract expires: 2028 Made a sizeable impact at the end of the season, especially as an attacking midfielder out of position at left-back. A packed midfield and the arrival of Ait-Nouri will limit his opportunities, but O'Reilly can be considered far more than a useful squad option. Kalvin Phillips Age: 29 Contract expires: 2028 An obvious candidate to leave. Rodri Age: 29 Contract expires: 2027 The only doubts, in the short term at least, are around his fitness after his serious knee injury last season. Being eased back into action at the Club World Cup and is set to be offered a new deal, with Dias' renewal perhaps coming first. Nico Gonzalez Age: 23 Contract expires: 2029 Arrived on the final day of the winter window and made a decent impact, but could barely get a look in towards the end of the season. Feels a bit overlooked given the hype around the summer arrivals, particularly with Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki vying for roles in the middle, but has all the hallmarks of a City midfielder. Needs to make a step up — but so did Rodri at the same stage of his career with the club. Advertisement Ilkay Gundogan Age: 34 Contract expires: 2026 Has been linked with a move to Galatasaray and MLS but said after City's game against Al Ain that he believes he will stay. Like most of his team-mates, he struggled last season but played his part in their push to third place and looked much more like his old self in a stable setup. That suggests he has plenty to offer, especially if he can alternate with the summer arrivals. Tijjani Reijnders Age: 26 Contract expires: 2030 Had a standout season for Milan and has already generated plenty of excitement among the City fanbase. Looks perfect for a Guardiola team and slotted in well on his debut against Wydad last week. City need him to continue his scoring form with Milan (15 goals in 54 games last season) while simultaneously brushing up on his defensive contributions, but he does seem a great fit. Bernardo Silva Age: 30 Contract expires: 2026 Chosen as captain by Guardiola to put an end to rumours that he would be among the raft of players leaving this summer. This could be his last season for the club. He has been open to a move away for years — but he keeps coming back for more. Like Gundogan, he improved hugely at the end of the season and still has plenty to offer. Rayan Cherki Age: 21 Contract expires: 2030 Reijnders should be a great fit and Ait-Nouri may offer something different from defence, but Cherki is the arrival that really captured the imagination. A real maverick and could thrive if given the same freedom as Kevin De Bruyne. Mateo Kovacic Age: 31 Contract expires: 2027 Like Stones, Akanji, Gundogan and Bernardo, Kovacic is another player who had initially appeared set to leave this summer before speculation cooled. Kovacic still seems to be an obvious candidate to depart, especially as City have brought in two new midfielders, but, like Gundogan and Bernardo, he finished the season strongly. A perfectly good midfielder, but he just isn't Rodri. Claudio Echeverri Age: 19 Contract expires: 2028 A loan for the 2025-26 season was always on the cards when he arrived in January and his lack of appearances in the second half of last season backs that up. That said, he made his debut in the FA Cup final, of all games. Injured his ankle in training this week but the desire to cut squad numbers means a loan still makes the most sense. James McAtee Age: 22 Contract expires: 2026 Looks likely to leave. He is at the Under-21 European Championship with England instead of the Club World Cup, and was barely given a look in last season despite City's raft of injuries. Phil Foden Age: 25 Contract expires: 2027 His contract expires in two years, which would normally add plenty of jeopardy considering his high-profile status, but his presumed loyalty as an academy graduate means there might be a little more time than usual to sort things out. After last season's struggles, a new deal might not have been a priority, either. Advertisement Savinho Age: 21 Contract expires: 2029 More will be expected of him going into his second season at City. He frustrated fans with his end product but he did get eight league assists, which was more than any other City player. Omar Marmoush Age: 26 Contract expires: 2029 Made a big impact after his January move and, like Savinho, will be expected to do even more in his second season. Jeremy Doku Age: 23 Contract expires: 2028 His second season was disrupted by injury and, later, by Guardiola generally picking teams without wingers at the end of the domestic season. Like Savinho, his inability to consistently register goals or assists frustrates fans, especially because the dribbling that goes before is so eye-catching. City will presumably need a winger to contribute more goals next season and if Doku can bring the rest of his game anywhere close to the level of his dribbling, he will be truly fearsome. Oscar Bobb Age: 21 Contract expires: 2029 Cruelly saw his season go up in smoke after breaking his ankle on the eve of the season in August. He had looked set for a big campaign but could not get back into the team even after the ankle healed, and did not start City's opening two Club World Cup games either, like others with long-term injuries. He could still make a significant impact this season. Erling Haaland Age: 24 Contract expires: 2034 Picked by Guardiola as one of his captains, in part to enhance his mindset and qualities as a team-mate. Given the huge contract he signed this year, there is no doubt about his immediate future at City. As long as he is fit, he always plays. A guarantee of goals since he signed three years ago but City could do with him returning to the frightening standards of his first season. Jack Grealish Age: 29 Contract expires: 2027 He has no future at the club after being left out of the Club World Cup squad. Has barely played over the past two seasons, with injuries holding him back. He has also fallen short of Guardiola's standards.

Borussia Dortmund set to reward head coach Niko Kovac with contract extension

Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac is set to be handed a new contract after the Club World Cup. Kovac signed a short-term deal which runs until the end of next season when he succeeded Nuri Sahin in February, but the 53-year-old is set to be rewarded with an extension following a strong finish to the campaign. Advertisement Formal negotiations over the Croatian's new deal are set to begin after Dortmund's Club World Cup campaign. They will face Mexican side Monterrey in the round of 16 on Tuesday after topping Group F with wins over South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns and South Korean club Ulsan HD and a goalless draw with Brazilian side Fluminense. Kovac led Dortmund from mid-table to a fourth-placed league finish and a return to the Champions League for the coming season after winning seven of their final eight matches of the campaign. He previously coached fellow Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as Monaco in Ligue 1 and the Croatia national team. Well deserved. When Kovac arrived in February, Borussia Dortmund were in 11th place in the Bundesliga and drifting towards a dismal season. Four months later, having inspired a run of form that saw Dortmund win seven of their last 8 games and remain undefeated from the middle of March, Kovac has the club back in the Champions League and heading in the right direction. Stylistically, Dortmund are a simpler, but tougher side than they were under Nuri Sahin. Kovac has implemented a 3-4-2-1 that seems to offer more stability and suit the players at his disposal, but the performance indicators — most noticeably the team's running and sprinting data — have also greatly improved, seemingly in response to a tougher form of coaching and more uncompromising type of man management. This is an important step. Kovac's original contract ran until 2026, meaning that his position would have been subject to speculation had he entered next season without an extension. With it, however, comes a proper endorsement and a sense of permanence that he and they will benefit from.
