Inter Milan Head Coach Praises His Team After Clinical Club World Cup Win Vs River Plate: 'Team That Want To Be Dominant'
Cristian Chivu praised Inter Milan's performance in a gutsy 2-0 win over River Plate in their final FIFA Club World Cup group-stage outing.
Speaking to Sport Mediaset via FCInterNews, the 44-year-old hailed Inter's character and desire to dominate their opponents.

Things didn't start well for Inter in Group E.
Indeed, they had to fight back to hold Monterrey to a 1-1 draw in a curtain-raising fixture.
Furthermore, it required Lautaro Martinez and Valentin Carboni's late heroics to beat Urawa Red Diamonds on matchday two.
However, the Nerazzurri saved the best for the last.
Francesco Pio Esposito and Alessandro Bastoni scored in the second half to inspire Inter to a dominant win over River Plate.
It's also worth noting that Marcelo Gallardo's side picked up two red cards after halftime.
Nonetheless, it took nothing away from Inter's promising performance at Lumen Field.

'It was a real match,' Cristian Chivu said after the game. 'I'm glad because we managed to turn it around despite the struggles in the first half, where their intensity caught us a bit by surprise.

'We managed to match their determination and character so we wouldn't get overrun by their style of play.
'Moreover, we found quality in our passing, played vertically, and occupied the pitch better.
'We achieved our goal of making it through to the next round.
'I'm happy for the players because it's not easy to go through such a long training camp, to always stay focused, and try to recover both physically and mentally,' he added.
'I see the desire to honor this tournament, and despite our difficulties, to deliver a dominant performance.
'That's what we did—they responded brilliantly, and I'm happy for everyone.'

Finally, he waxed lyrical about Pio Esposito, who scored in his first Club World Cup start.
'He worked hard for everyone. The team and I are happy for him.
'At the same time for what everyone managed to give – those who played, those who came off the bench, and even those who unfortunately didn't get to play but still gave their energy and desire to their teammates.
'The applause happened, and by now it's become a habit.
'That's the way it should be, and now he should treat everyone to dinner.
'Scoring your first goal in your first start, in a competition like this, it's a big deal.'

Stars, Jamie Benn agree on 1-year contract extension, keeping franchise icon in Dallas: Sources

At 35 years old, Jamie Benn isn't the player he once was. But in Dallas, he's every bit as important as he's ever been. So while the Stars have all sorts of salary-cap concerns that forced them to trade Mason Marchment to Seattle and even have them considering Jason Robertson's future, Benn's return to the team was never in doubt. Advertisement Benn, the Stars' captain and longest-tenured player, will return for his 17th season on a one-year, incentive-laden contract, per league sources. His base salary will be just $1 million but could be worth as much as $4 million if he hits all of his bonuses. 'You want to talk about immortal, statue-out-in-front-of-the-rink-type person and player and leader, that's Jamie Benn,' said Matt Duchene, who last week signed a four-year, $18 million deal to stay in Dallas. 'That's probably the best way to put it. … I think it'd be a crime if he's not a Dallas Star for life, and I'd be shocked if it went (differently). He bleeds green and he's going to go down as one of the greatest Dallas Stars to ever play for a long time. 'Hopefully he's able to continue his career, and he's still a great player, and he brings so much to the table for us. More than people would know. More than I knew before I got here. When I got here, you see it from a different lens. I've been extremely impressed and blown away by what he brings.' Benn had 16 goals and 33 assists in 80 games this past season, his lowest career goal total in a full season. He struggled mightily in the postseason, posting just one goal and two assists in 18 games as the Stars fell short in the Western Conference final for the third straight season. He won the scoring title a decade earlier with 87 points, has 399 goals and 956 points in his career, and just two years ago had a renaissance season with 33 goals and 45 assists in 82 games. Despite his age and heavy style of play, he's missed just two games in the past four seasons. After Dallas' season ended in Game 5, Benn was short and to the point about his future. Had he thought about his future? 'No.' Did he want to be a Dallas Star? 'Yep.' Did he feel good about the chances of that happening? 'Yep.' Advertisement A couple of days later, on locker-cleanout day, Benn was a little more loquacious about his future. 'I don't see myself going anywhere else,' he told reporters in Dallas. 'This is all I know, so hopefully we can get something figured out.' Stars general manager Jim Nill never sweated Benn's future, either, thanks largely to the incentive-laden structure of over-35 contracts. 'He wants to be here,' Nill said in May. 'And with him turning 35, we have different ways to attack it.' Dallas has virtually no cap space left, even after jettisoning Marchment. But Nill still could be a major player in free agency if he gets aggressive, as he tries to shake up a perennial contender that seems to have hit its ceiling in the conference final.

After declining a max extension, what's next for Austin Reaves and the Lakers?

Four years after he went undrafted and signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, Austin Reaves is set to again wait — this time on a major raise. League sources told The Athletic that Reaves formally declined a max extension with the Lakers this week that would've paid him $89.2 million over the next four seasons. He's about to start the third year of a four-year, $54 million contract he signed as a restricted free agent in 2023 — also the max number he could receive from the Lakers at the time. Advertisement He can opt out of that deal and become an unrestricted free agent next summer, when he's expected to command significantly more than the most lucrative extension the Lakers were allowed to offer this summer. The decision, league sources said, wasn't a reflection of Reaves and the Lakers' relationship — instead it's almost a foregone conclusion considering the limitations placed on the amount the Lakers were allowed to offer this week. Reaves' upcoming potential free agency meant his name was floating in and out of rumors on the first day of the NBA Draft. The Lakers have never shown real interest in trading Reaves and continue to hold him in high value. Still, there are skeptics around the NBA, mostly because there's pressure for the Lakers to aggressively upgrade their roster alongside Luka Dončić, LeBron James and, presumably, Reaves — three players Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka singled out in his end-of-season press conference on May 1. 'I think when your foundation for those three players is that they're players of high-character and a highly competitive nature, that's the perfect starting point to have three players like that,' Pelinka said. 'LeBron's a selfless player, high character. All he cares about is winning. Luka Dončić, the same. Austin Reaves, the same. 'I think when you get those three pillars in a training camp environment and you're starting to build an ethos around them, that's a great starting point. And we didn't have that opportunity this year, but we will next year.' Reaves averaged 20.2 points per game this past season, a career high. His pending free agency makes him a bit of a tricky player to trade for. Teams that value him can offer him basically twice as much as the Lakers' extension offer in 2026. And if you're a team that thinks the Lakers are willing to move Reaves instead of paying him, are you pushing your best assets into talks to get a deal done for someone you might just be able to sign 12 months from now? Advertisement If you're the Lakers, are you looking at a five-game series with Minnesota where Reaves had the least productive postseason of his career as an indictment or are you factoring in the painful toe injury that limited him in the final two games of the series? Promises of internal improvement and continuity aren't nearly as exciting as 'Breaking News' alerts signaling trades. As the Lakers prepare for their lone scheduled decision of the NBA Draft — the No. 55 pick — fans should have realistic expectations for the kind of impact a player taken in the final gasps of the second round can have on a roster. None of the guesses around the NBA for what the Lakers might do in the second round — from targeting a center to looking for defensive toughness and/or shooting to spending cash to move up in a trade if necessary — are all that surprising. During the draft's first day, scouts and executives around the NBA gossiped plenty about the Lakers and their need to add a starting center and their desire to get more versatile on the wing. And because there are limited pathways for the Lakers to address those needs now, rival league personnel wondered if Reaves was potentially more available via trade than he'd ever been before. The Lakers and Reaves, though, seem committed to remaining in a partnership. At his youth basketball camp in Arkansas earlier this month, Reaves told a local television station he hoped to remain with the team throughout his career. 'I want to be in LA. I want to play my whole career in LA. I love it there. I love the fans. Love the weather, love the golf,' Reaves told K8 News. 'And obviously the Lakers is the best organization in basketball.' From the Lakers' perspective, there's some proof of concept that a Dončić-James-Reaves trio can work. The team went 10-3 in the 13 regular-season games it started together (with Rui Hachimura) — including road wins over eventual Eastern champions Indiana and NBA champion Oklahoma City. Advertisement Is that the cause for the Lakers to be sidelined on the first days of the new NBA offseason and not make a trade? It's difficult to say other than the team, because of a relatively lean asset chest, can't afford to make the wrong move, even if it's done to fill an obvious hole. The Lakers remain aggressive in their pursuit of a center (the one they traded for midseason last year, only for the deal to be rescinded, Mark Williams, got dealt to Phoenix on Wednesday for the No. 29 pick and a future first). They're armed with ample expiring money, a helpful tool in any trade, a future first-round pick and last year's rookie, Dalton Knecht, to get a trade done should one present itself. At least for now, the Lakers seem more focused on finding the right deal instead of simply just finding a deal. Reaves told the Lakers he thought it was best to wait. Now, it's on the Lakers to signal to the NBA whether or not they're willing to do the same. (Photo of Austin Reaves: Juan Ocampo / NBAE via Getty Images)
