Disbanded after Hema report firestorm, Malayalam film artists' body sees a historic first – a woman as president

Indian Express21 hours ago
For the first time in its three-decade history, the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) Friday elected women as its president and general secretary.
The election for the new office-bearers was held a year after its 17-member executive committee, headed by Mohanlal, quit in the wake of the Hema committee report and subsequent revelations of sexual misconduct.
While Shweta Menon was elected president, Cuckoo Parameswaran is the new general secretary. The former defeated veteran actor Devan, while the latter's rival was Raveendran.
The general body also elected Lakshmi Priya as vice-president and Ansiba as joint secretary. Unni Shivapal is the treasurer of the committee, which is elected for the next three years.
Shweta told the media that the new committee will bring in changes. 'We will bring in all members who have quit the body. They are most welcome. There are no men or women in the body; all are actors,' she said.
The newly elected general secretary said, 'All the 508 members of the AMMA will be taken into confidence before any decision. This body will bring in changes.'
Days before the elections, Shweta had faced a case based on a complaint that 'she acted in movies and advertisements involving nudity and made financial gains by misusing her notoriety as a vulgar actor'. The High Court stayed the proceedings in the case, which was allegedly linked to her contest in the AMMA elections.
The Hema committee report, which came out a year earlier, had triggered an uproar in the film industry, and the then general secretary of AMMA, Siddique, was forced to quit in the wake of the alleged sexual misconduct.
Its joint general secretary, Baburaj, also faced similar allegations. Several prominent actors had openly come out against AMMA, leading to the disbanding of the executive and office-bearers.
Shweta is a prominent actress, model, and television anchor, active in the entertainment industry for the last three decades. She debuted in the Malayalam film industry in 1991 in Mamootty-starrer Anaswaram. After being crowned Miss Bangalore, she was adjudged third in the Miss India contest in 1994, which Sushmita Sen won.
Twice, she won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress – first for her performance in Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathirakolapathakathinte Katha and then for her role in Salt N' Pepper.
Newly elected general secretary Cuckoo started her career as a child artiste. She is also a classical dancer, fashion designer and theatre professional. In 1988, she bagged the second-best actress award in Kerala for her role in Ore Thooval Pakshikal.

Janaki V v/s State of Kerala movie Twitter review: Controversial Malayalam film gets lukewarm response after OTT release

Controversial Malayalam movie, Janaki V v/s State of Kerala, had its OTT release on August 15. The movie had its digital release on ZEE5. Now, people are sharing their thoughts on social media platforms like Twitter (now X). 'Just watched a decent film! JSK - Janaki V vs State of Kerala is okay but lacks depth. Worth a casual watch,' wrote one user. Another wrote, 'Decent courtroom drama with real incidents.' 'Spectacular movie. The courtroom drama in the first half was just brilliant.. very realistic arguments that turned a goat into a tiger.. Because it's Suresh Gopi, the leftist media ecosystem gave negative reviews of the film,' came from another. Other social media platforms also had some reviews. 'While the movie touches upon certain issues faced by women in the society, the latter half looks like being in a hurry to complete the story the usual cinematic way,' says a review on Google. 'Absolutely terrible movie! Don't waste your time. Very poor direction. Bad acting and it feels like no one seems to know what they're doing,' says another review. Another user wrote, 'I don't agree with the verdict at climax... The point here is how can court give judgement on a infant that it should be orphan.. why it should be punished with no fault of its... Why should it live without parents... Why should it live without its mother...?' 'I was expecting a gripping thriller but what I got was a dramatic court trials and sloppy scripts. Honestly, it wasn't that great,' posted another. Janaki V v/s State of Kerala ran into a CBFC row over its lead name Janaki, seen as linked to goddess Sita. The board demanded changes, prompting the makers to move to the Kerala High Court. Eventually, a compromise followed as the title became Janaki V v/s State of Kerala. The name Janaki was muted in two scenes. The film was released on July 17 with minor edits. Anupama Parameswaran plays the protagonist. BJP minister Suresh Gopi, a well-known actor in Malayalam cinema, plays a major role in the movie. The first BJP MP from Kerala currently serves as the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Minister of State for Tourism in the Government of India since June 2024.

Mumbai, Aug 16 (IANS) Veteran actress Saira Banu has reminisced about finally meeting Hema Malini after years, cherishing their bond, old memories, and shared moments from film sets. 1 2 Veteran actress Saira Banu has reminisced about finally meeting Hema Malini after years, cherishing their bond, old memories, and shared moments from film sets. Saira took to Instagram, where she shared two pictures posing with Hema and wrote: "You see, Hema and I had been wishing to meet each other for a very long time, but life, in its own way, kept us apart. Not so long ago, she called me, and before I knew it, she was at my doorstep." "We spent a beautiful few hours together immersed in memories, reliving those golden days, and sharing laughter over stories that time can never erase. Among them, we revisited a Janmashtami incident-one so profound that it changed the course of my life within weeks." Saira recalled that she met Hema for the first time on the sets of the Deewana in 1966. "I first met Hema in 1966, on the sets of Deewana by Raj Kapoor Sahab. She had come along with her producer Anantswamy to RK Studios, Chembur, and I remember being instantly impressed by her lovely looks." She talked about the moments from beauty secrets with their mothers. "Soon after, we met again while we were simultaneously shooting at the scenic Krishna Raj Sagar Dam in the South. Our rooms were adjoining, and in the evenings my mother, Hema, her mother and I would sit together in the large verandahs, exchanging beauty secrets. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Indonesia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo I reminded her how Amma would put lobaan in her hair for freshness and khushboo, a detail that made her laugh in surprise at how much I remembered." Saira also recalled how her late legendary husband Dilip Kumar and she introduced Hema to the press in Madras in a meeting organised by Anantswamy. "Dilip Sahab was so kind and gracious to be the main person to introduce her, and Hema was visibly touched by that memory. Not long ago, it warmed my heart to see her with Dharam ji on a reality show dancing together so beautifully." "Dharam ji put his arm around her, and the love and comfort between them was such a joy to watch. She laughed that day and told her her cousin Prabha, who accompanied her that how much "Saira ji remembers!" Saira said. During that conversation with Hema, Saira told her another Janmashtami story, one that is especially close to my heart. "The picturisation of the Kanha song in Shagird happened to fall exactly on Janmashtami. We were shooting at Filmistan Studios with the ever-charming Nazir Hussain Sahab, who was also working in Madras with Dilip Sahab on Ram Aur Shyam. Because of date issues, Nazir Sahab would shoot with me late into the night and then fly early in the morning to work with Dilip Sahab." She recalled how "that night", as she sang the bhajan before Lord Krishna's idol with Lata Mangeshkar's enchanting voice in playback, "I mischievously told Nazir Sahab, "You are working with Dilip Sahab oh, how lucky you are! Please tell him that Saira is dying to work with him... and if he refuses, then ask him to marry me!" "Nazir Sahab was momentarily stunned, and then burst into that booming laughter he was so famous for." "The next morning, he dutifully carried my playful message to Dilip Sahab. I'm told Dilip Sahab smiled gracefully perhaps to hide his embarrassment. But wonder of wonders, within days, he walked into my life, looked into my eyes, and asked my grandmother and mother for my hand in marriage," Saira said. When Saira thinks back now, she realises Janmashtami has always brought her "precious blessings, friendships, cherished memories, and the love of my life." "And sharing these stories with Hema made the memories all the more sweet." "Get the latest news updates on Times of India, including reviews of the movie Coolie and War 2 ."

He said 'AMMA's public image is extremely poor. At such a time, the presence of a woman was very necessary. Senior actors themselves said that it's time for a woman to take charge and bring about change. From an outsider's perspective, I believe this change will help improve that tarnished image.' 'We hope Shwetha will become a unifying factor. She possesses strong leadership qualities and is an excellent organiser. In every way, a very good president has been chosen,' he added.
