Hungary-Turkey Joint Economic Commission meet in Ankara

Minister Szijjártó acknowledged Turkey's role in ensuring Hungary's secure energy supply, noting that Hungary took delivery of over 21 million cubic metres of gas a day through the TurkStream pipeline.
Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the Hungary-Turkey Joint Economic Commission met in Ankara on Thursday.
After the meeting, Minister Szijjártó acknowledged Turkey's role in ensuring Hungary's secure energy supply, noting that Hungary took delivery of over 21 million cubic metres of gas a day through the TurkStream pipeline. He added that those deliveries were set to climb by 750,000 cubic metres a day in July under an agreement between state-owned energy group MVM and Turkey's BOTAS.
Minister Szijjártó warned that a plan by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to ban cheap Russian gas and crude from the European Union would cause Hungarian households' utility bills to double or triple.
Minister Szijjártó highlighted a strategic partnership between Hungarian oil and gas company MOL and Turkish peer TPAO that could boost MOL's role on markets in Europe and North Africa through joint upstream projects in Turkey, Syria and Libya. He added that MOL and TPAO were also partnering on oil field projects in Hungary.
He noted that a Turkish company was building a power plant in the east of Hungary.
Bilateral trade between Hungary and Turkey reached USD 4.4bn in 2025 and could climb over USD 5bn in 2025, Minister Szijjártó said.

Ukraine's ambassador to Hungary summoned to Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade again

Ukraine's ambassador to Hungary has been summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade again, this time over the issue of the church in Palagy Komarivci (Palágykomoróc). Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said on Thursday that Hungary was sending aid for the reconstruction of the church even today. Minister Szijjártó told a press conference after a meeting of the Hungarian-Uzbek mixed committee that the church of the village had been set on fire and anti-Hungarian slogans had been sprayed on its walls. 'Such attacks against a national community in a country supposedly aspiring for European Union membership are outrageous, astounding and disappointing,' Minister Szijjártó said. He insisted that anti-Hungarian attacks had started a decade ago 'in the form of laws systemically curbing the community's rights to the use of their mother tongue.' 'The Ukrainian state is responsible for that. We have been asking them to stop for ten years… We have indicated at all possible forums that Hungarians in Transcarpathia are suffering grave attacks. It started with laws and went on to forced conscription, assault and arson on churches,' he said. Minister Szijjártó also condemned European political leaders who 'turned away and refused to acknowledge that the Hungarian community is suffering harsh attacks combined with physical intimidation in Ukraine, a country which they are trying to fast-track into the EU.' He said he had given instructions to have the funding for the church's reconstruction transferred to the diocese on Thursday.

Hungarian farmers protest against ‘drastic reduction' in agricultural support

At demonstrations in Budapest and Brussels, Hungarian farmers were out in force yesterday to protest against a 'drastic reduction' in agricultural support planned by the European Commission. In a joint statement, the National Agricultural Chamber (NAK) and farmers' association MAGOSZ said several hundred farmers joined the demonstration in Budapest, while representatives from both advocacy groups joined around 70 of their European peers at a demonstration in Brussels. NAK and MAGOSZ said the European Commission was preparing to rechannel support for farmers to Ukraine's accession and defense expenditures, while obstructing access to resources with 'non-transparent rule of law procedures'. They highlighted the resulting risk to the farm and food sector as well as to consumers as subpar products from non-EU countries enter the market.

FM: Government calls on EU to place 3 Ukrainian military leaders on sanctions list

Speaking in connection with the Hungarian-Ukrainian conscript who recently died, Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said the government has called on the European Union to place three Ukrainian military leaders responsible for forced conscription on the bloc's sanctions list. Minister Szijjártó said the Council of Europe had confirmed that 'a real manhunt' was taking place on the streets of Ukraine, and its human rights report said people evading conscription were 'sometimes beaten and tortured'. Referring to videos made public in recent months, he said it was 'horrifying' how Ukrainian army recruiters treated people, 'and it is equally horrifying how European political leaders turn a blind eye to this intolerable situation.' He added that those responsible 'must be found … [and] punished'. 'We demand that three people serving in the Ukrainian defence ministry and the army leadership who are responsible for forced conscription be held accountable,' Minister Szijjártó said.
