2013 Seahawks are the 2nd best team of the last 25 years, according to ESPN
Recently, ESPN's Bill Barnwell ranked the 25 best teams from the last 25 years. The 21st century is a quarter complete, so why not examine which teams have stood out the most during this span? Seattle's faithful 12th Man will be thrilled to see the 2013 Seahawks rank very highly on this list, near the top even. According to Barnwell and ESPN, the 2013 Seahawks are the second best team in the NFL during the previous 25 years.
The 2013 Seahawks trailed only the 2007 New England Patriots for the top spot. Super Bowl loss or not, it's hard to argue that Pats team wasn't an all-timer.
Naturally, Barnwell waxed poetic about the Legion of Boom. Where else would you start? He elaborated on just how suffocating the defense was, and how the foundations for this success was built on the treasure trove of draft picks from 2010-2012. However, one aspect Barnwell points out that separates the Legion of Boom from other great defenses of this era (such as Baltimore and Tampa) was the fact the team was better overall, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
Barnwell writes:
This team had Marshawn Lynch running for 1,257 yards and 12 touchdowns before adding 288 yards and four more scores during the playoff run. Wilson averaged 8.2 yards per attempt, threw for 3,357 yards and added 539 more yards on the ground, all while making a sensibly priced sedan (just under $31,000) per game. Harvin and Sidney Rice, nominally the team's top two wideouts on paper because of their contracts, combined for 16 catches during the regular season because of injuries. Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse stepped in and held their own.
This Seattle team often gets lumped in with the 2000 Ravens and 2002 Bucs with an assumption that the Legion of Boom carried them. Yes, they were the heart of the team, but it's not like Wilson and Co. were slouches on their side of the ball either.
The reason the 2013 Seahawks narrowly missed out on the No. 1 spot was because Barnwell described them as "sloppy" at times that year... and it's hard to argue. Seattle often plays to their opponents level, for good and for ill. They had to survive in overtime against a Tampa team that was 0-7 going into that game, and barely squeaked past a bad Rams team 14-9 on Monday Night Football. Not to mention the ugly 17-10 home loss to Arizona despite intercepting Carson Palmer four times. No, they weren't pretty, but when it mattered this squad got the job done.
Not for nothing, but the 2014 Seahawks did crack into the Top 25 at No. 23 overall.

Eagles' Landon Dickerson serves beers at practice while recovering from knee surgery
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Landon Dickerson played bartender and served cold ones for the Super Bowl champion Eagles with the injured offensive lineman's career temporarily on ice. The Eagles can't wait for Dickerson to resume his day job. Dickerson passed around beers Thursday at the end of a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns — with a brace on his right knee following meniscus surgery that will keep the three-time Pro Bowl lineman sidelined at least through the end of training camp. Dickerson was injured at the end of Sunday's open practice at Lincoln Financial Field. There is no set timetable for his return, and Brett Toth took first-team snaps at left guard this week at practice. Toth likely will start for the Eagles when they play their second preseason game Saturday against the Browns. 'Whatever they ask me to do, I'm going to step to the plate and give it the best I got,' Toth said. 'Hopefully I can perform to the standard that was before me.' Beyond that, there are no guarantees. The Eagles remain hopeful Dickerson could return for the season opener when the Eagles raise their championship banner on Sept. 4 against Dallas. 'Don't have to name any starters or any backups at any position,' coach Nick Sirianni said. 'Brett's done a nice job and I like the depth that we have at that position and I know we have options there, but you asked about Brett, I think Brett's doing a really good job and he's got a lot of versatility.' Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson remained confident that Toth could handle the spot but was relieved that Dickerson wasn't necessarily expected to remain sidelined deep into the season. 'It was alarming but I'm glad we got a good-case scenario,' Johnson said. 'Make no mistake, Landon's one of the, if not, the best guard in football.' Toth, who played at Army, has had three stints with the Eagles and spent a bulk of that time on the practice squad. 'H's a really smart individual, really good with the detail of the game,' Eagles offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said. 'He understands a lot of positions, which is great to have a guy like that that can line up in multiple spots and be able to step in if something happens. So I think that's the biggest thing he brings and I think he's been in the system for a while.' ___ AP NFL:

Wrexham smashes its transfer record by signing Broadhead in a deal worth up to $13.5M
Wrexham's spending moved into a new stratosphere Thursday when the team owned by Hollywood celebrities signed winger Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich in a club-record deal that could reportedly reach 10 million pounds ($13.50 million). It took the Welsh club's outlay in the transfer market to more than 20 million pounds ($27 million) in this window as Wrexham reshapes its squad for life in the second-tier Championship following an unprecedented three straight promotions. The 27-year-old Wales international is a former Wrexham academy player and a versatile forward who was a fringe player at Ipswich in the Premier League last season. 'He's a local boy who had a real desire to come and play for his hometown club," Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said in the team's announcement. Among Wrexham's other signings over the last couple of months is former England defender Conor Coady and New Zealand international Liberato Cacace. Lewis O'Brien also joined from Nottingham Forest for what was reportedly a club-record fee of around 3 million pounds ($4 million). Wrexham, which started its Championship campaign last weekend with a 2-1 loss at Southampton after conceding two late goals, is owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and has gained outside investment via the New York-based Allyn family. It is also the subject of the Emmy-winning 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary, which takes viewers behind the scenes at the club and has boosted the team's global appeal primarily because of the presence of Reynolds. ___
