Tata Motors races to regain EV dominance with Harrier.ev launch as rivals gain ground
Tata Motors on Tuesday launched the much-awaited Harrier.ev in an effort to strengthen its position in India's electric vehicle (EV) market. The move comes as rival carmakers such as JSW MG Motor and Mahindra & Mahindra ramp up their EV offerings, chipping away at Tata's once-dominant market share.
Just a year ago, Tata Motors commanded 73% of India's electric passenger vehicle market. However, a surge in rival launches and their quick adoption by EV buyers has eroded Tata's lead, making the Harrier.ev a crucial addition to its lineup.
Tata Motors' electric car sales fell 15% in May 2025 as it delivered 4,316 units compared to 5,083 in the same month last year. This decline reduced its share in the small but fast-growing EV market to 35%. In contrast, JSW MG Motor India's share in this segment rose to 30% share as its sales, thanks to the high demand for its Windsor model, grew by 159% year-on-year to 3,737 units.
Mahindra & Mahindra, which commenced deliveries of the BE 6 and XEV 9E in March this year, sold 2,605 EVs in May 2025, boosting its market share to 21%. The company has delivered 10,000 units of these models since deliveries began on March 20.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Managing Director Shailesh Chandra recently said that they have aspirations to have more than 50% market share in the EV market in the mid-to-long term. 'We would aspire to be at a 50 per cent market share by having a very wide product portfolio and products which are aligned to the expectation of the customers,' he stated.

Apple has brought in Tata Group to handle repairs for iPhones and MacBook devices in its fast-growing Indian market, signalling the Indian conglomerate's deepening role in the U.S. tech giant's supply chain, two people familiar with the matter said. As Apple looks beyond China for manufacturing, Tata has fast emerged as its key supplier and already assembles iPhones for local and foreign markets at three facilities in south India, with one of them also making some iPhone components. In its latest partnership expansion, Tata is taking over the mandate from an Indian unit of Taiwan's Wistron, ICT Service Management Solutions, and will carry out such after-sales repairs from its Karnataka iPhone assembly campus, both sources said. The market for repairs is only going to boom in India, the world's second-biggest smartphone market, as iPhone sales skyrocket. Counterpoint Research estimates around 11 million iPhones were sold in India last year, giving Apple a 7% market share, compared to just 1% in 2020. The latest contract award signals Apple's growing confidence on Tata as it hopes to win more business from the world's most valuable smartphone company. 'Tata's deepening partnership with Apple could also pave the groundwork for Apple directly selling refurbished devices in India, like how it does in the United States currently," said Prabhu Ram, a vice president at Cybermedia Research. The takeover from ICT by Tata is currently ongoing, both sources said, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak on the matter. Apple and Wistron did not respond to requests for comment, while a spokesperson for Tata declined to comment. While Apple's official service centres across India can do basic repairs, they would now ship phones and laptops to Tata's facility for more complex issues. Mahindra next-gen Bolero could be its most advanced yet: Spy shots hint at these changes
Homegrown giant Mahindra has commenced road-testing the next-generation Bolero across India, signalling a major shift for the popular SUV. According to an HT Auto report, the new Bolero is expected to make its first official appearance in concept form on 15 August, coinciding with the brand's tradition of major reveals on Independence Day. One of the most significant updates could be the SUV's transition to Mahindra's newly developed New Flexible Architecture (NFA) platform. This monocoque chassis is likely to mark a departure from the traditional body-on-frame construction and promise improved weight efficiency and compatibility with modern powertrains, including hybrid and electric options. The NFA platform will also underpin several upcoming models, with production taking place at Mahindra's Chakan plant. Reportedly, the facility is anticipated to produce up to 1.2 lakh vehicles based on this platform, aiding the company in meeting the stringent CAFE 3 emission norms by 2027. Spy images of the camouflaged prototype reveal a boxy silhouette that harks back to the Bolero's rugged roots, while borrowing cues from premium SUVs. The front end features circular headlamps and a bold grille with vertical slats, complete with Mahindra's updated twin peaks logo at the centre. Vertical tail lamps and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel reinforce the utilitarian design, although it is worth noting that the lights seen on the test mule are not final production units. Another interesting detail could be the presence of flush door handles, a contemporary touch likely to improve both aesthetics and aerodynamics. Squared-off wheel arches and a relatively flat side profile evoke comparisons with the Land Rover Defender, suggesting Mahindra is aiming for a blend of robustness and sophistication. Alloy wheels are also visible, hinting at a more premium positioning for the vehicle. Inside, the upcoming Bolero is expected to be equipped with a host of modern features. These include a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support, USB charging ports, automatic climate control, and cruise control. On the safety front, Mahindra is likely to offer features such as traction control, cruise control, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, and up to six airbags—aligning the Bolero with contemporary safety standards.

The Tata is the sixth electric car in the brand's lineup. Here are the key differences between the newly launched Tata and the Harrier ICE. Tata Vs Tata Harrier Diesel: Powertrain The Tata is available with two battery pack options: 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery packs. The bigger battery pack gives 627 km of claimed range. Also, it gets an AWD setup. Whereas, the Tata Harrier gets a 2.0-liter Kryotec turbo diesel engine that can propel a peak power and torque output of 170 hp and 350 Nm of torque. Whereas the Harrier ICE gets other features, it misses out on the Dolby Atmos speakers. Tata Harrier diesel Tata Vs Tata Harrier Diesel: Additional Features The Tata gets Summon Mode that enables it to move through key control. It also has features like auto-park assist, size multi-terrain modes, digital IRVM with Dashcam, transparent mode, and more. Meanwhile, the Tata Harrier Diesel misses out on all these features. Also, the gets vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-load charging features. The Tata is available at a starting price of Rs 21.49 lakh (ex-showroom). Whereas, the prices of the Harrier ICE start from Rs 14.99 lakh (ex-showroom).
