Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka HC orders interim release of RCB marketing head, three others
The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered the interim release of the marketing head of Indian Premier League team Royal Challengers Bengaluru and three others who were arrested in connection with the stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium, Live Law reported.
Eleven persons were killed and more than 50 were injured on June 4 in the stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where fans had gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League.
On June 5, the court took suo motu cognisance of the incident and issued notice to the Congress government in the state. It also sought a status report from the Karnataka government.
A day later, the Karnataka Police arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran Kumar S and Shamant NP Mavinakere in connection with the stampede.
On Thursday, Justice SR Krishna Kumar ordered the interim release of the four men, and directed them to surrender their passports, Live Law reported.
During the hearing on Wednesday, Sosale's counsel argued that individuals cannot be held liable when an entity is named in the first information report, and claimed the arrests were made without proper investigation.
The petitioners also argued that their arrests were politically motivated and made allegedly on the directions of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, despite the police lacking jurisdiction over the case, The Hindu reported.
In response, Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty, representing the state of Karnataka argued that Royal Challengers Bengaluru held the victory parade without official permission and misled the public through social media posts.
'They have over 28 lakh followers milords,' Shetty was quoted as saying by the legal news outlet. 'They have invited the whole world but no permission is given.'

Following the incident, RCB's head of marketing and revenue, Nikhil Sosale was also arrested. He was then granted interim bail on June 12 but was asked to surrender his passport. 'I was angry for almost a day and I really delayed even putting anything out on social media because I was so angry. In a sense, we were talking about a modicum of balance during the rivalries bit right? One can understand that in the celebrations,' he stated. "You really want people to get close to the team and celebrate with them. I certainly think it could have been better planned, maybe take a day off to just plan the whole event because the city did deserve it, to be very honest," he added. Uthappa further stated that going forward, whenever there is an RCB game, he will be left concerned, thinking about the families who lost loved ones during the stampede. 'The sad part is now that whenever there is an RCB game, my heart shudders to think what those families will experience. It just hurts, man. It truly truly hurts,' said Uthappa. 'I just think they didn't have enough time to plan for it. In hindsight, doing it the very next day was an error in judgment,' he added.

'As a chief minister, one should have a sober approach. There is no need to react impulsively to the circumstances. As an administrator, you must make decisions with sobriety," he told News18. Moily, known to call a spade a spade, in his letter, which is with News18, has written that the chief minister's disciplinary action against several officials in a short span of time seemed a 'drastic and unwanted measure". 'It would be wise to review the administration's hasty actions regarding this incident. There is a possibility that this could bring a bad name to your administration," Moily wrote. 'Make efforts to hold all scheduled matches' The veteran Congress leader highlighted the public response to the incident and the decisions taken by the government, emphasising that 'Bengaluru's reputation, earned over decades, should not be erased by this recent accident". He noted that the city, which has contributed many talented cricketers to the national and international arenas, has now come under criticism in the cricketing world. Moily reiterated that rather than launching multiple inquiries, the situation demands a thorough investigation by a retired judge, with the report submitted at the earliest to restore public trust and confidence among cricket lovers. The onus, he said, is now on the government to act swiftly and create an organised, peaceful environment that reflects the true spirit of the occasion. 'It is imperative that you, as the Chief Minister, take special precautions in this regard. You have already arranged an inquiry by the Honourable District Magistrate, an investigation by a retired High Court judge, and a CID investigation into this incident," he stated in the letter. He also placed the onus of clearing Bengaluru's and Karnataka's names on Siddaramaiah by conducting a proper investigation, which he believes has come under scrutiny after the stampede. 'Special care must be taken for those who died and were injured in the accident—not only by providing compensation, but also by showing empathy to the families of those who lost their lives and to the injured, and by instilling confidence in them," Moily advised. Referring to reports that future cricket matches in Bengaluru may be shifted to other venues in light of the incident, Moily also stressed that the government must send out strong signals that 'appropriate steps have been taken regarding the incident and that such incidents will not happen in the future", ensuring that cricket and other matches can be conducted in a safe and proper manner.
