The Smart City, Patil said, is also a zero landfill city, meaning all the waste generated in a day is being collected, segregated and processed without adding to the legacy waste. 'The wet and dry waste segregation has remained more than 90 per cent,' Patil said and added that these factors will contribute to the city's improved ranking in Swachh Survekshan this year.
Apart from Bhubaneswar, both Aska and Chikiti have been selected as the Presidential Awardees for performing well in the cleanliness survey. In 2023 Awards, Chikiti NAC had been ranked 12 among cities having population below one lakh. The other two categories of the award for 2024 include Super Swachh League Cities and Ministerial Awardee (Special Category). However, no city or town from Odisha has figured in these two categories.
Officials, however, said the Super Swachh League was for the cities that have consistently figured among top 10 in the last five years, while the Ministerial special category competition is for Gangetic towns, cantonments, special purpose vehicles (SPVs), etc.
The cities will be presented the awards at a special function to be held in New Delhi on July 17. The city rankings are also likely to be announced on that day, said an official from the Housing and Urban Development department.

British retailer Tesco to set up distribution center; to create 15,000 additional jobs in Karnataka

Tesco, the UK-based retail giant, is planning to open a new distribution centre in Karnataka, which is expected to generate 15,000 additional jobs, according to Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil. The Minister also said Rolls-Royce, another UK-based company, was also actively exploring fresh investments in the State. 'The government will expedite all necessary processes to facilitate these companies' plans,' he assured while speaking at a celebratory reception dinner hosted by the British Deputy High Commission in the City to mark the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the United Kingdom. Mr. Patil said the FTA pact was projected to boost bilateral trade by around £25 billion annually and was expected to help trade double approximately to £90 billion by 2030. The FTA would pave the way for duty-free access for 99% of India's exports to the UK and 90% of UK exports to India. This, Mr. Patil noted, would mean more affordable products, greater market access for businesses, and a surge in commerce benefiting consumers and industries in both countries. He urged the UK-based firms to leverage the State's technology capabilities, robust infrastructure, and industry-friendly ecosystem. Leading British firms such as Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Tesco, ARM, HSBC, and Aviva already have a significant footprint in Bengaluru and across Karnataka, Mr. Patil said.

Russia restricts Telegram and WhatsApp calls: Why the Kremlin is cracking down on messaging apps

Russia has begun restricting voice calls on popular messaging platforms Telegram and WhatsApp , citing alleged failures to comply with Russian law, particularly regarding information sharing with law enforcement in fraud and terrorism cases. According to Reuters, the restrictions affect only call functionality, while messaging features remain intact. The move comes amid Russia's push for 'digital sovereignty,' including the development of a state-backed messaging app integrated with government services. Officials say compliance with Russian regulations, including opening local legal entities and cooperating with authorities, could lead to the lifting of the call restrictions. Telegram and WhatsApp face legal and compliance issues The Russian digital development ministry stated that foreign-owned platforms have repeatedly ignored requests to prevent their services from being used for criminal activity. As reported by Reuters, Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the lower house of parliament's information technology committee, said that the measures would remain until Telegram and WhatsApp fully comply with Russian law, including cooperation with Roskomnadzor and law enforcement agencies. He warned that failure to comply could force platforms to leave the Russian market. WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, Reuters journalists verified that voice calls on Telegram have barely functioned since August 11, and WhatsApp calls were severely disrupted with intermittent sound and metallic buzzing. Push for a state-backed messaging platform President Vladimir Putin has authorized the development of a government-backed messaging app as part of Russia's broader digital sovereignty strategy. According to Reuters, the Kremlin aims to reduce reliance on foreign technology while promoting home-grown services. Critics have raised concerns that the new app could allow the state to track users' activities, while Russia may also deliberately slow down foreign messaging platforms to encourage migration to the domestic service. Shilpa Shetty and Raj Kundra's advocate says allegations of Rs 60 crore fraud was a 'Malicious attempt to defame my clients'

Soon after Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty Kundra and her businessman husband Raj Kundra were booked in connection with the Rs 60.4 crore cheating case, their advocate, Prashant Patil, on Thursday issued a statement to IANS, calling the allegations "baseless" and said it is aimed at maligning the reputation of his clients. Advocate Releases Statement Responding to media reports, Advocate Prashant Patil released a statement that read, "My clients have been informed by certain segments of electronic and print media that an alleged case has been registered against them at the Economic Offences Wing, Mumbai. At the outset, my clients deny all the allegations, which are purely civil in nature and have already been adjudicated by the NCLT Mumbai on 04/10/2024." Calling it an old business transaction that turned into a legal matter after financial distress, Patil added: "There is no criminality involved. Our auditors have submitted all necessary supporting documents from time to time, as requested by the EOW, including detailed cash flow statements." He further clarified that the investment agreement in question was like an equity investment, and the company had already received a liquidation order, which was also presented to the Police Department. "The concerned chartered accountants have visited the police station more than 15 times over the past year, with all evidence supporting our clients' claims. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Learn 57+ Languages Easily with AI [Join] Talkpal AI Sign Up Undo This is nothing but a baseless and malicious case aimed at maligning our clients, and appropriate legal action is being initiated from our side against the perpetrators," Patil stated. About The Case The fraud case has been linked to a now-defunct company Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, which involves a complaint by Mumbai-based businessman Deepak Kothari, who has accused the couple of defrauding him of over Rs 60 crore in a loan-cum-investment deal between 2015 and 2023. According to police sources, complainant Deepak Kothari, director of Lotus Capital Financial Services, alleged that the funds, meant for business expansion, were diverted for personal use. He said that Rajesh Arya had introduced him to the celebrity couple, who at the time were the directors of Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, a home shopping and online retail company in which the couple reportedly held a combined 87.6 per cent stake. Complaint Filed Initially, the complaint was filed at Juhu Police Station under sections related to cheating and forgery. However, given the financial scale of the case, exceeding Rs 10 crore, the investigation was transferred to the EOW following a preliminary inquiry. Kothari claimed that the accused initially sought a loan of Rs 75 crore at 12 per cent interest but later urged him to structure it as an investment to avoid higher tax liability. In return, they allegedly promised monthly returns along with repayment of the principal amount.
