IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts, weather could affect I-Day celebrations
In view of Wednesday night's torrential rainfall in state capital Lucknow, District Magistrate Vishak G has ordered all schools from Classes 1 to 12 to remain closed on August 14.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the current monsoon spell is set to intensify in western Uttar Pradesh from Thursday, with an orange alert for very heavy rainfall issued for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Bijnor.
Senior scientist Atul Kumar Singh of the Regional Meteorological Centre said that after the intense showers in eastern UP and the Terai region, western UP is expected to receive significant rainfall on Thursday and Friday.

The Mumbai Police cautioned the residents against venturing out unless essential. 'Mumbai is experiencing heavy rainfall with an Orange Alert in effect. Waterlogging and reduced visibility have been reported in several areas. Mumbaikars are advised to avoid non-essential travel and to exercise caution while venturing out," Mumbai Police posted on X. A yellow alert was issued for Palghar, Thane, and Mumbai on Friday, warning of moderate to heavy rain. In Palghar, the rain is expected to get heavier from Sunday and last until August 19. Raigad and Ratnagiri, which are under an orange alert until next Tuesday, are also likely to get a lot of rain. Weather officials explain that this spell of rain is due to a low-pressure system over south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh. There is also an east-west trough – a line of low pressure – extending from the Bay of Bengal into the Arabian Sea. This combination is pulling in moisture and causing heavy showers along the Konkan coast, including Mumbai. According to the IMD, the wet conditions are likely to continue until at least August 20. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its disaster control rooms and kept pumping stations ready to manage flooding in low-lying spots. Additional staff have been deployed in areas that typically see waterlogging, and tree-trimming teams are also on standby to prevent accidents caused by falling branches. The HPSDMA stated that rain-triggered disasters, including landslides, flash floods, cloudbursts, house collapses, drowning cases, and electrocution, have caused widespread loss of life and property. Mandi district reported the highest number of rain-related deaths at 26, followed by Kangra (28), Chamba (10), and Kullu (11). As per ANI, road accidents have been another major killer this season, with Kangra (12), Kinnaur (12), Mandi (21), Shimla (15), and Chamba (20) among the worst-affected districts. HPSDMA officials attributed many of these accidents to slippery roads, poor visibility, and vehicles skidding off rain-soaked mountain roads. Power supply has also been severely impacted, with 681 Distribution Transformers (DTRs) disrupted. The districts of Kullu and Shimla are the most affected, with 145 and 63 disrupted DTRs, respectively. In Kullu, the disruptions are due to a flash flood, faulty lines, and fallen trees.

Under its influence, the rainfall activity over Maharashtra is very likely to increase during Aug 15-20, 2025.
