Cyber frauds from Southeast Asia cost Indians Rs 1,500 crore monthly: Government data

NEW DELHI: A data compiled by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has revealed that a majority of cyber frauds targeting Indian citizens are being operated from Southeast Asian countries such as Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand.
These frauds are primarily linked to organised networks allegedly managed by Chinese operators and have cost people in India up to ₹1,500 crore per month, sources said on Sunday.
According to I4C data for the first half of 2025 (January to June), India has suffered online financial losses amounting to approximately ₹8,500 crore. Alarmingly, more than half of these losses are tied to cybercrime operations based in Southeast Asian nations.
On average, the data revealed that monthly cyber fraud-related losses to Indians in 2025 range between ₹1,300 crore and ₹1,500 crore.
However, the data for 2025 marks a noticeable decline compared to 2024, when the monthly average stood at around ₹2,200 crore. Sources said this decline is attributed to improved surveillance, international cooperation, and public awareness campaigns by the I4C.

Myntra, SIMPL under ED scanner for suspected FEMA breaches totalling ₹2,567 crore

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) on Wednesday (July 23, 2025) announced that they had taken up a case under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) against Myntra Design Private Limited, companies linked to it, and their directors for alleged contravention to the tune of ₹ 1,654 crore. The central agency claimed that the investigations were initiated based on credible information that Myntra and its linked companies were doing multi-brand retail trade in the guise of wholesale cash and carry, allegedly in violation of the extant FDI policy. According to the ED, Myntra had declared that they engaged in wholesale cash and carry business, inviting and receiving funds from FDI to the tune of ₹ 1,654 crore. The ED alleged that Myntra sold majority of their goods to Vector E-commerce Pvt. Limited, a company that sold goods in retail to the customers. Vector is a company under the group that also owns Myntra. The Central Agency said that Vector was created and continued as a corporate entity to bifurcate Business to Customer (B2C) transactions (Myntra to customers) into Business to Business (Myntra to Vector) and then B2C (Vector to Myntra). ED alleged that Myntra has violated conditions laid for wholesale or cash and carry trading, which permit only 25% of sales to companies of the same groups and group companies. Myntra and other companies have allegedly contravened the provisions as per FEMA, 1999, and the consolidated FDI policy dated April and October 2010, to the tune of ₹1,654 crore. Reacting to the allegations, a Myntra spokesperson said that they are deeply committed to upholding all applicable laws of the land and operating with the highest standards of compliance and integrity. 'By working closely with Indian brands and sellers, artisans, and weavers, we have helped bring traditional craftsmanship to a global audience, particularly among the Indian diasporas. In doing so, we've strengthened the industry's digital backbone and created large-scale employment and entrepreneurship opportunities across the country. While we have not received a copy of the subject complaint and the supporting documents from the authorities, we remain fully committed to cooperating with them at any point in time,' the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, in a separate case, the ED said that they booked One Sigma Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (SIMPL), under FEMA and its director, Nithya Nand Sharma, for alleged contravention to the tune of ₹ 913.75 crore. 'The enquiries were initiated on the basis of credible information that One Sigma Technologies Pvt. Ltd. (SIMPL) has received a substantial amount of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from the United States of America, allegedly in violation of the extant FDI Policy,' the ED said. 'One Sigma Technologies Pvt. Ltd. runs its business through a mobile application named SIMPL. It provides Buy Now Pay Later services, which allow its customers to buy now and pay later in instalments,' ED said. 'It was learnt that One Sigma Technologies Pvt. Ltd. received FDI to the tune of ₹648 crore and issued convertible notes to the tune of ₹ 264 crore under the 100% automatic route by declaring its business activity as 'benefits of information technology and other computer service activities,' said the ED. The allegations are that the company received FDI under the automatic route and issued convertible notes under the automatic route without obtaining prior approval from the Government of India.

Gujarat ATS busts terror module linked to Al-Qaeda affiliate, arrests 4 men

Ahmedabad, Jul 23 (PTI) The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Wednesday claimed to have busted a terror module after arresting four persons, who were allegedly promoting the ideology of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), a proscribed outfit. The quartet, two of them from Gujarat, was arrested from different locations in a multi-state operation, officials said. 'A terror module affiliated with AQIS has been busted by the Gujarat ATS. Four persons linked to the proscribed terror outfit have been arrested," the agency said. These four men were involved in sharing radical and provocative content, including jihadi propaganda videos of AQIS, on social media platforms with an aim to uproot democratic system and implement 'sharia' (Islamic law) in India through an armed rebellion, said an official release. The ATS recently received a tip-off that some Instagram account holders were spreading extremist ideology of AQIS and trying to attract Muslim youth towards radical outfits by sharing inflammatory content calling for violence or terrorist acts against Indian citizens, said the release. Acting on the tip-off, the ATS kept a close watch on five such Instagram accounts and nabbed four persons, two of them hailing from Gujarat, who were running them, it said. Those arrested were identified by police as Mohammad Faiq, a resident of Delhi, Zeeshan Ali, an inhabitant of Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Saifulla Qureshi, a native of Modasa town of Arvalli district, and Ahmedabad resident Mohammad Fardeen Shaikh. 'These four individuals came into contact with each other through social media. We learnt that Delhi-resident Faiq was in contact with a Pakistani Instagram user and discussed ways to spread jihadi activities in India," said Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Gujarat ATS, Sunil Joshi. During a raid at Shaikh's house in Fatehwadi area of Ahmedabad city, the Anti-Terrorist Squad found a sword and AQIS literature promoting jihad against India for its 'Operation Sindoor' carried out against Pakistan in May, he informed. 'The main agenda of these four accused was to attract youth towards AQIS ideology and incite them to uproot democracy in India to establish sharia through violence. We are investigating if they received any funds and what their exact plans were," Joshi noted. Their Instagram posts contained AQIS literature, call for establishing sharia and other such radical statements which had the capacity to create communal hatred, said the IPS officer. The accused had also posted a video of Asim Umar, an Indian who had joined AQIS and later on killed in Afghanistan in 2019, he informed. 'The conduct of the accused amounts to a premeditated criminal conspiracy to incite terrorism, promote armed insurrection, and undermine the sovereignty and democratic fabric of India" the DIG said. Actions of the four men associated with AQIS were aimed at radicalizing youth, creating communal disharmony, promoting secessionist and terrorist agendas under the guise of establishing an 'Islamic Khilafat' (caliphate or an Islamic state), Joshi asserted. They were arrested under relevant sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) — an anti-terror law — and sections 113 (terrorist act), 152 (acts endangering sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India) and 196 (promoting enmity between different groups) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In 2023, four Bangladeshi nationals were arrested from different parts of Ahmedabad city for having links with AQIS, a regional affiliate of international terrorist network Al-Qaida. Assam: 2 men held for forging passport using deceased's documents for Bangladeshi

Silchar: Two men from Assam were arrested in Sribhumi district for allegedly creating a fake Indian passport for a Bangladeshi national by using forged documents belonging to a deceased Indian citizen, police said on Wednesday. During verification, it was discovered that all the documents were generated in the name of Farooq Ahmed, who had died several years ago. (HT Archive/ Representative photo) The accused — Burhan Uddin and Faizur Rahman — both residents of Patharkandi, were arrested after police detected discrepancies during a routine verification process linked to a passport application filed a few months ago. During verification, it was discovered that all the documents — including a voter ID card, birth certificate, Aadhaar card, and PAN card — were generated in the name of Farooq Ahmed, who had died several years ago. 'The passport application was submitted in the name of one Farooq Ahmed. They managed to create a voter ID and other identity documents for the Bangladeshi national using details of a deceased Indian citizen. But we caught it during the passport verification process,' senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Sribhumi, Partha Pratim Das, said. Police seized several forged documents, photographs, and a computer used in the creation of the fakes. The computer has been sent for forensic analysis, he added. We suspect that more individuals — including foreign nationals — may have obtained Indian identity documents using similar forged paperwork,' an investigating officer said. Police said initial findings suggest the racket has been active in the border areas for some time, helping Bangladeshi nationals infiltrate India by impersonating locals. Meanwhile, the Assam Police arrested eight Bangladeshi youths at New Bongaigaon railway station for allegedly entering India illegally. They were also found carrying fake Indian documents. SSP Bongaigaon, Mohanlal Meena, said that an international human trafficking racket is suspected to have assisted them in crossing the border and acquiring forged identification.
