Endowment & Society Conference concludes in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI (WAM) The Endowment & Society Conference concluded on Sunday after two days of activities that ran under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court. The event was organised by the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, at Erth Hotel, Abu Dhabi.Addressing the conference, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, said that the theme of this conference aligns perfectly with the 'Year of the Community.''Under the guidance of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, we seek to mobilise all efforts and resources while fostering collaboration between individuals and societal institutions to cultivate a national environment that drives sustainable development, promotes responsibility, and advances the nation's progress.'Addressing the guests of the UAE President, Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan said, 'Your presence among us here in the conference is a sincere reflection of the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in achieving unity of thought and productive collaboration among individuals and institutions of the nation.''The theme of this conference also coincides with the noble initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai in establishing the 'Father's Endowment' initiative that embodies the noble teachings of Islam in honouring parents,' Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan said.'The UAE is now a model to be emulated in the fields of endowments and charitable work. Thanks to God, we are a nation committed to the principles of humanitarian giving and social solidarity—principles that were firmly established by the Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. These principles faithfully and sincerely reflect the vision of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who has emphasised the necessity for individuals and all societal institutions to play an active role in the nation's progress and to be effective partners in achieving comprehensive development across all its regions,' he noted.Shaikh Abdullah bin Bayyah, Chairman of the UAE Council for Fatwa, and Head of the Abu Dhabi Forum for Peace, said that endowments are a great concept that embodies the wisdom of Islamic Sharia in strengthening the foundations of cooperation among members of society and caring for those in need… In this world, endowments serve as a reserve for future generations and as an ongoing charity for the donors, who continue to receive its rewards.'This embodies the principle of sustainable benefit, as a defining characteristic of endowments is the enduring nature of the endowed asset and the continuous allocation of its proceeds to charitable causes designated by the donor. Consequently, endowments are governed by a comprehensive framework of regulations designed to safeguard and strengthen their purpose while ensuring the well-being of their beneficiaries.'For his part, Dr. Omar Habtoor Al Darei, Chairman of the General Authority of Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, affirmed that the purpose of endowments is always to be a lifeline for the heart of society, which thrives on giving, and fulfilling the needs of its members, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims.Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, along with esteemed dignitaries and officials, toured the accompanying Endowment Exhibition, which showcased the history of endowments in the UAE through illustrated galleries and digital platforms. The exhibition highlighted the stages of its development and growth throughout the history of the UAE, as well as the laws regulating endowments and their development.
The conference was attended by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Shaikh Abdullah bin Bayyah; Dr. Omar Habtoor Al-Darei; Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs; along with distinguished scholars who are guests of His Highness the UAE President, officials from endowment institutions in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and experts in endowment affairs in the UAE.

12 June 2025 15:26 ABU DHABI (WAM) Abu Dhabi's hospitality sector continues to show robust growth, with hotel establishments across the emirate generating revenues of Dh611 million in March 2025, according to preliminary data released by the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in coordination with the Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD).The total revenue breakdown comprises Dh345 million from room bookings, Dh228 million from food and beverage services, and Dh38 million from other emirate welcomed approximately 417,000 hotel guests during March, highlighting Abu Dhabi's growing appeal as a global tourist destination. The surge is attributed to the emirate's diverse accommodation offerings and high-quality hospitality services.A total of 171 hotel establishments, comprising 34,341 rooms, operated across Abu Dhabi in March. These properties recorded over 1.2 million guest nights, achieving an average occupancy rate of 69%. The average revenue per available room (RevPAR) stood at Asian nationals topped the list of international visitors, accounting for 152,000 hotel guests. European travellers followed with 123,000 guests, while UAE nationals accounted for 58,000 stays. These figures underline Abu Dhabi's sustained tourism growth and its strengthening position as a preferred destination for a wide range of global hotels hosted the highest number of guests, totalling 205,000 in March. European visitors made up the largest segment within this category, with 78,000 guests. Four-star hotels received 119,000 guests, followed by three-star and below hotels with 54,000 guests. Additionally, serviced apartments accommodated 38,000 strong performance aligns with Abu Dhabi's Tourism Strategy 2030, which aims to attract 39.3 million visitors annually, generate 178,000 new jobs in the tourism sector, expand hotel capacity to 50,000 rooms, and increase the sector's contribution to the emirate's GDP to Dh90 billion by the end of the decade.

UAE delegation participates in High-level Energy Transition Dialogue in Brussels

Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, participated in the High-Level Energy Transition Dialogue, hosted by the Presidency of the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in partnership with the International Energy Agency at the headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels, high-level meeting came as part of global efforts to prepare for COP30, scheduled to be held in Belém, Brazil. It served as a platform for exchanging perspectives on accelerating the implementation of the outcomes of COP28 and COP29 and achieving global energy transition goals — including doubling energy efficiency and tripling renewable energy capacity by an audience of energy ministers and senior officials, Al Olama said, 'At COP28 in Dubai, the international community reached an important milestone: the UAE Consensus. This outcome marked a turning point in how the world approaches the energy transition—not merely as an environmental necessity, but as an economic, social, and development imperative."Building on this momentum, COP29 in Azerbaijan reaffirmed global commitments to scaling up clean energy investment and facilitating credible transition pathways. It emphasised the vital role of finance, technology transfer, and regional cooperation as core enablers. The Global Stocktake, launched at COP28, continues to serve as a critical benchmark for delivery, and the next step is to begin turning that assessment into meaningful action.'He added, 'For the UAE, the energy transition is not a distant goal—It is a national priority already in motion, driving real change on the ground. Our updated UAE Energy Strategy 2050 strikes a deliberate balance between energy security, affordability, and sustainability. It establishes clear targets for clean energy deployment, deep decarbonisation across sectors, and—crucially—bold and achievable improvements in energy efficiency improvements in energy efficiency."We recognise that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, as set out in our national pathway, cannot be achieved by renewables alone. Energy efficiency is not an add-on, or good to have, but rather a core pillar of the transition. It is the lowest-cost, highest-impact lever we have—and a key enabler for all other technologies and solutions.'Moreover, the UAE delegation participated in the 10th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency, organised by the International Energy Agency in partnership with the EU the conference, Al Olama continued, "In the UAE, we see energy efficiency not only as a tool for decarbonisation but also as a powerful lever to strengthen our economy. We are supporting industries and enterprises to reduce costs, improve energy security, and enhance operational performance. These efforts help attract investment, support high-quality job creation, and foster innovation and competitiveness across key sectors. However, challenges do remain. Despite its clear economic benefits, the pace of progress is often constrained by barriers such as limited access to finance, low awareness, misaligned incentives, and high upfront costs—particularly in emerging markets."This is precisely why the UAE announced its intention to establish the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) during COP29 in Baku, in support of the UAE Consensus and the global goal of doubling the energy efficiency improvement rate, from the historical average of 2 per cent to over 4 per cent annually by 2030. Today, we are proud to officially launch GEEA here in Brussels, reaffirming our commitment to placing energy efficiency at the forefront of the international energy and climate agenda. This effort comes at a critical moment, as we are currently off track, the global energy efficiency improvement rate remains below 1.5 per cent annually, and at this pace, we will fall short of achieving our decarbonisation and net-zero targets.'He noted that as founding Chair and Secretariat of GEEA, the UAE is working closely with partners to move from advocacy to implementation—by scaling technical cooperation, mobilising finance, and enabling the design and delivery of national and sector-specific efficiency extended an open invitation to all governments, private sector entities, financial institutions, and civil society organisations to join the Alliance—to contribute expertise, to align efforts, and to accelerate global progress on energy the sidelines of his engagements in Brussels, Al Olama held several bilateral meetings to promote GEEA and drive the global energy transition agenda. These include meetings with Stefani Sannino, Director-General for the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf at the European External Action Service; Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Energy at the European Commission; Ben Copp, Director-General of the Office of Energy Efficiency at the National Resources of Canada; Jan Dusík, Deputy Director-General for Climate Action at the European Commission; Masanori Tsuruda, Deputy Commissioner for International Affairs at Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry; and Anders Hoffmann, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Danish Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities.

He noted that strategic collaboration and long-term investment in emerging technologies are key to building an advanced and innovative space ecosystem. He also expressed confidence in UAE-based companies and entrepreneurs. Their contribution is seen as vital to driving the sector's growth and boosting the country's status as a global space hub. The Crown Prince revealed that the space sector is a major driver of future and sustainable economic growth. He added that the UAE is working to create a supportive environment for local businesses and attract new investment opportunities. Sheikh Hamdan reported that the private sector is now leading the UAE's space efforts. He praised the maturity of national investments made over the last 30 years. Several UAE-based companies participated in the meeting. These firms represent a range of specialisations, including: Internet of Things (IoT) solutions Artificial intelligence, robotics, and remote sensing Edge computing and high-resolution Earth observation They also showcased developments in reusable launch systems and simulation technologies. Participants discussed their current projects, long-term strategies, and future investments. They stressed the need to expand operations locally and globally, while strengthening collaboration with the government. They also highlighted the UAE's flexible regulations and advanced infrastructure. These were described as key enablers of innovation and growth. The Space Economic Zones Programme was welcomed by attendees. It was praised for enabling partnerships and supporting long-term development in the sector. The meeting was attended by several prominent figures, including Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Secretary-General of the Supreme Space Council. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the UAE Space Agency.
