History beckons for the legends in Greece

The Star14-06-2025
MAJOR champions, Ryder Cup players and global winners all gathered for the fourth regular event of the Legends Tour season, the Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy this week.
The Legends Tour returned to Greece for the second Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy, with Paul Lawrie, Michael Campbell, Scott Hend and Stephen Gallacher headling an international field with players from all six inhabited continents.
In addition to seven former Ryder Cup players, two-time DP World Tour champion Anthony Wall was making his debut and PGA Tour winner Bo Van Pelt was playing in his first regular Legends Tour event, having made his over-50s bow at the recent Senior PGA Championship in America – the first of three majors that count on this year's Order of Merit.
It was another American who wrote his name in the history books last year as Clark Dennis won the inaugural Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy with a score of 17-under.
The Texan was relishing the prospect of defending his title in Greece after enjoying his first visit to the country so much 12 months ago.
'It was great. The venue was just amazing from the start. I thought the courses were brilliant and we just had a fantastic time the whole week.
'There's a lot of history and a lot of fun things to see, and the resort is incredible.
'I can't recommend it highly enough for people to go and experience it,' he said.
Scoring was incredibly low on the Bay 12 months ago, but it was the Olympic where Dennis came to the fore with two rounds of 66 to come through the field and win by four shots.
'The Olympic is a good course. I thought it was fair. It's scorable if you drive it in the fairway, but if you start to drive it a little crooked, it can be tough,' he said.

Rugby-Australia suffer World Cup blow as Caslick ruled out

Caslick, who was named sevens World Player of the Year in 2016, damaged her ankle against New Zealand last month but was included in Jo Yapp's Australia squad last week. Yapp said on Monday Caslick's timeline to recover and be available during the World Cup pool phase had changed. "Following medical advice, the decision was made to allow her to continue on an accelerated recovery program, where she could be available as an injury replacement should we require a player later in the tournament," Yapp said in a Rugby Australia statement. "We're really disappointed to lose Charlotte so close to the World Cup. She has shown great commitment to the XVs program and Wallaroos this year." Uncapped centre Manu'a Moleka has been called into the squad as a replacement. "We're really fortunate and excited that Manu'a can join us for the World Cup," added Yapp. "Manu'a has been part of the touring squad since the start of the international test season and thoroughly deserves her opportunity to join us." Australia open their tournament against Samoa in Manchester on August 23 before further pool matches against the United States and England. Nathan Chen won't defend Olympic figure skating gold in Italy

OLYMPIC gold medallist Nathan Chen has announced he will not defend his figure skating title at next year's Winter Games in Italy. The American athlete revealed his decision in an interview with the Los Angeles Times published on Saturday. Chen stated he will focus on pursuing medical studies rather than returning to competitive skating for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics. 'I just want to open doors to kind of see what's the best sort of approach for me,' Chen told the newspaper. 'And frankly, at this point in time in my life, I've already accomplished enough in skating that I'm quite satisfied with my career.' The 26-year-old Yale graduate has won six US championships and three world titles during his decorated career. Chen helped secure team gold for the United States at the 2022 Beijing Olympics before claiming the individual men's crown. Known for his technical mastery of quadruple jumps, Chen holds the world record combined score of 335.30 set at the 2019 Grand Prix Final in Turin. The skater nicknamed the 'Quad King' is now exploring medical school options with interest in cardiology or oncology. 'The basis of being a doctor, I think, is to help people,' Chen said. 'I think that's something that I didn't necessarily feel as an athlete.' Chen's decision marks the end of an era in men's figure skating following his dominant performances in recent years. – AFP

Justin eyes long-term gains from short training stint in Denmark

PETALING JAYA: Men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh (pic) will not take his short training stint in Copenhagen, Denmark, next week lightly even though he knows his chances of featuring in the World Championships in Paris are slim. Justin knows he needs to find every possible way not only to stay competitive but also to break into the elite ranks of the men's singles, especially with his performances having come under heavy criticism in the past. His trip to Copenhagen will only be as a sparring partner for Leong Jun Hao and K. Letshanaa, who have qualified for the World Championships, with the camp serving as part of their preparations for the tournament. However, Justin also intends to make the most of the chance to train with Denmark's national players, even if the stint lasts only five days from Aug 18 to 22. The World Championships will then take place in Paris from Aug 25 to 31. 'I will head to Denmark (on Aug 16) to train and have the opportunity to practise with some big names. I am very happy to be given such a chance,' said Justin when met at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'This is important as I will be competing in several more tournaments, and I hope to do well in the final few months of the year. 'I am truly grateful for this opportunity because it will be a different environment with top players around. I really want to learn from them. 'I want to pick up on their discipline, both on and off the court.'' According to the updated men's singles list by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Aug 5, even with several players having withdrawn, including two-time world champion Viktor Axelsen, Justin's chances of making his debut in the prestigious tournament remain slim as he is placed 18th on the reserve list. In fact, with Axelsen still recovering, Justin's chances of training with the Olympic champion and Anders Antonsen in Copenhagen are also slim as both are now competing professionally and are no longer part of the Danish national team. Even so, there are still other players whom Justin can train with. Among them is Rasmus Gemke, an opponent Justin nearly stunned twice last year. Their first meeting came during the group stage of the Thomas Cup, where Justin, then only 20 years old and ranked 233 in the world, managed to push Gemke – who was ranked 26 at the time – to a rubber game before the Dane eventually prevailed.
