(Reuters) -Arsenal's new Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres is primed to make his Premier League debut against Manchester United, with manager Mikel Arteta predicting on Friday that the striker will have a "tremendous impact" this season as the club chases silverware.
Arsenal splashed nearly 200 million pounds ($271.12 million) in a summer spending spree to land six new players including Gyokeres, who was hot property on the transfer market after netting 54 times in all competitions for Sporting last term.
Benjamin Sesko had been on Arsenal's radar before moving to United and in a twist of transfer fate, the two clubs' new strikers are set to face off at Old Trafford when the age-old Premier League rivals play each other in a rare season opener.
"I can just talk about Viktor and how happy we are to have him. He is going to have a tremendous impact in the team and his adaptation has been really, really good and we are happy to have him," Arteta told reporters.
"Many strikers have come from different leagues and been successful. It's on us, creating the right context for Viktor to do what he does best, which is to score goals.
"He is getting better and better every day. He is normally a really fit player and he has had the small moments in two (pre-season) games with us, so let's see what he brings on Sunday."
Arteta said new midfield recruit Martin Zubimendi has also integrated into the team well and is fit for Sunday's game.
Arsenal have finished the last three seasons as runners-up in the Premier League and the pressure is on Arteta to deliver a league title after reinforcing the squad in key positions.
"If you keep digging, digging and digging, then one day the gold is going to be there. All the time, it is what I have been taught my whole life," Arteta said.
"For the last three seasons we have more points (combined) than anybody else in the league and that says a lot about our consistency. Now we just have to do it in a season."
Arsenal great and former skipper Tony Adams suggested Arteta should take the captain's armband from Martin Odegaard, who had a relatively poor season due to injuries last term, and hand it to Declan Rice.
However, Arteta said the decision to stick with Odegaard as the captain was unanimous.
"My opinion is clear and it's not just my opinion, it's all the staff and especially the players. I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday," Arteta said.
"By a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody chose the same person - Martin Odegaard - which is the most clear sign that you can have.
"It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win."

Sailing-Brazil out of Germany Sail Grand Prix after high-speed crash in practice

(Reuters) -Brazil will not compete in the Germany Sail Grand Prix this weekend after their F50 foiling catamaran was damaged in Friday's practice while France raced against time to fix their F50 after both vessels crashed in Sassnitz. The incident occurred when the France team led by Quentin Delapierre suffered damage and the F50 boat fell off its foils. Just seconds later, Brazil's F50, which was going over 80 km/h, suddenly suffered a high-impact nosedive and came to a complete standstill as it capsized. SailGP said an investigation into the incident is under way but confirmed Brazil will not compete this weekend due to extensive damage. "Meanwhile the SailGP shore team will be working through the night to attempt to get France to the start line when racing begins tomorrow at 3.30 p.m. CEST (1330 GMT)," they said in a statement. SailGP said Delapierre was taken to hospital after practice to be checked over and was cleared of any injury. No Brazilians were hurt in their crash. Brazil are 10th in the standings with 13 points while France are sixth with 38 points. New Zealand's Black Foils top the table with 64 points. Soccer-Marshall Islands make history with first-ever international football match

(Reuters) -The Marshall Islands finally got off the mark in international football on Thursday and promptly lost 4-0 to the U.S. Virgin Islands on a high school pitch in Arkansas, but not before making history as the world's newest national team. The remote Pacific nation with fewer than 40,000 people played their first-ever international at the 3,000-capacity Jarrell Williams Bulldog Stadium in Springdale, better known as home to the local high school's American football team. "I feel surreal this morning; it's one of those out-of-body experiences," technical director Lloyd Owers told Reuters before the historic match. "I don't think we or anyone else thought we'd be here in two and a half years. The fact that it's going viral across the world is a great feeling." The English ex-semi-professional player from Oxfordshire, who took charge in 2022, led a squad this week that included players experiencing 11-a-side football for the first time. With just five training sessions together, the 20-man squad spans generations from a 15-year-old to a player in his early 40s. "The (team) were a bit nervy, understandably, but we have a good dynamic off the field and that has helped raise our game," Owers added. "Now we're going into these games wanting to compete and turn that nervous energy into a positive experience." The match kicked off the Marshall Islands' own creation — the Outrigger Challenge Cup, a four-team tournament featuring two FIFA members, Turks and Caicos Islands (world-ranked 206th)and U.S. Virgin Islands (207th), plus local side Ozark United's under-19 team. Northwest Arkansas was chosen as the venue because it hosts the largest Marshallese community in the United States and offers a convenient mid-point for Caribbean opponents. The Marshall Islands Soccer Federation, established in 2021 with the support of British volunteers and self-funded, harbours ambitions that extend beyond Thursday's outing. FIFA membership would unlock up to $8 million in funding over four years, but confederation membership is required first. Despite writing to Oceania, the Marshall Islands claim to have received no response, with the confederation citing a 'lack of direct air links' as the barrier. They are, however, considering applying to CONCACAF (the North American confederation) and the AFC (Asian confederation). Saturday brings their next challenge against the Turks and Caicos Islands and another chance to make history. New-look Liverpool kick off Premier League season after spending spree

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom: Reigning champions Liverpool kick off the Premier League season on Friday with Europe's richest league strengthened by a remarkable £2 billion (US$2.7 billion) spending splurge. Liverpool will include £100 million midfield signing Florian Wirtz and new forward Hugo Ekitike in their squad to face Bournemouth at Anfield, with several other new recruits also in contention to feature. The Reds are favourites to retain their crown but the unknown factor is the potential effect of the tragic death of Portugal forward Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain in July. Arsenal, top-flight runners-up for the last three seasons, face an immediate test of their title credentials at revamped Manchester United on Sunday. Newcastle will be without unsettled star Alexander Isak for a tough trip to Aston Villa as Liverpool try to sign the Sweden striker. Here are several issues to watch on the opening weekend: Liverpool have changed their careful shopping habits and suddenly outspent their rivals, overhauling a squad fresh from winning the league. Only once since 2007, when Manchester City did it in 2019, have the Premier League champions been the biggest-spending English club in the market. A spree that has already seen Liverpool's US owners approve £260 million on Wirtz, Ekitike and defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, is far from over with Isak and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi linked with moves to Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have been sold. The transition has shown teething problems in pre-season with a slick attack let down by a porous defence. Manager Arne Slot is confident his side are ready as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1984. "I think we've lost five to six players that played quite a lot of minutes for us last season and we brought in four new ones, so then it's normal that there's a little bit of adaptation," said Slot. "But we are definitely ready for the league to start." Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are set to make their Premier League debuts for United and Arsenal respectively at Old Trafford after a summer that could have seen them line up the other way on Sunday. Arsenal were linked with a move to Sesko for over a year before deciding to bet on Gyokeres as the man to fire them to a first Premier League title since 2004 for a fee that could rise to £66 million. The Gunners have finished second for the past three seasons, lacking a clinical finisher to take that final step towards being champions Gyokeres netted a remarkable 97 times in 102 games in two years at Sporting Lisbon, much of which came under United's now-manager Ruben Amorim. Instead of being reunited with the Swede, Amorim has overhauled his attack with the signings of Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha at a combined cost of over £200 million. "I don't need to tell Ben, 'Ben, this is Manchester United, a lot of pressure. Every game is like do or die'," Amorim said of Sesko. "He is always thinking about football. He's really obsessed about that." United, one of the world's richest clubs, had to spend big after their worst season since being relegated in 1974. As the Premier League's traditional "big six" of Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have flexed their financial muscle in the transfer market, Villa and Newcastle have been squeezed out. Constrained by the need to meet financial sustainability rules, Villa's only major signing has been Ivorian striker Evann Guessand from Nice. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had to field constant questions about Isak, who sat out pre-season preparations in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool. Howe admitted on Friday that Isak controls his transfer destiny after confirming the 25-year-old will not feature in Saturday's opener against Villa. "As I sit here now, I don't know that. Alex will control that," he said when asked if the striker would play for Newcastle before the transfer window closes.
