Writer proposes Lakers trade for former Defensive Player of the Year
One report indicated that they have had some preliminary trade talks to inquire about the availability of Marcus Smart, a veteran guard who won the Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2021-22 season. Smart is 31 years of age and has been injury-prone, but he could be the type of suffocating defender L.A. needs, and he could also serve as a secondary ball-handler and facilitator.
Jedd Pagaduan of ClutchPoints proposed that the team send guard Gabe Vincent, big man Maxi Kleber and a 2032 second-round draft pick to the Washington Wizards for Smart.
Via ClutchPoints:
"What made Vincent valuable for the Lakers last season was that he showed up for the majority of the season, suiting up in 72 games and providing some much-needed backcourt versatility for the Purple and Gold," Pagaduan wrote. "Giving him up for Smart requires the Lakers to take a risk and have faith that the 2022 DPOY isn't damaged goods quite yet.
"That requires a lot of positive thinking, as the Grizzlies, the team that acquired Smart to be their de facto Dillon Brooks replacement, had to give up a first-rounder just so they could get his contract off the books. Smart hasn't been at his best physically over the past few seasons, picking up a knock here and there which added up to a ton of missed time
"... There is a chance that the 31-year-old won't be able to return to his DPOY form, although even then, he would represent an upgrade over Vincent. ... But at the very least, Smart showed that he can still play solid basketball for stretches. His shooting percentages improved towards the end of last season when he was with the Wizards, and in LA, he won't be tasked to do much of anything other than to defend, hit open shots, and ruffle opponents' feathers.
"The expectation for Smart should the Lakers trade for him would be for him to play at least 65 games, play 20 minutes a night, and act as a key piece of a Purple and Gold squad that aims to recapture the defensive heights they reached last year."
Los Angeles is in a situation where it may not be able to be picky about the player upgrades it pursues on the trade market, given its limited trade assets. Smart has appeared in just 54 games over the last two seasons, but as long as he's available for the entirety of the playoffs, he may be a good player for the team to go after.
This past season, he averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.0 minutes a game. He shot 34.8% from 3-point range, which was his highest figure in that department since the 2018-19 season.
After spending his first nine seasons with the Boston Celtics, Smart has plenty of playoff experience, which includes five trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and one appearance in the NBA Finals. That wouldn't exactly hurt a Lakers team that has gotten younger lately.

Watch: Luka Doncic casually hits halfcourt shot while looking very fit
After he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, Luka Doncic received a lot of criticism for being out of shape and not taking care of his fitness and conditioning. He still put up his usual outstanding numbers, but his ability to get up and down the court and stay in front of his man defensively was noticeably compromised. So far this offseason, there has been plenty of talk about how Doncic has apparently gotten in much better shape. He was seen several weeks ago looking noticeably slimmer, and according to one report, he has been "incredibly committed" to his health and conditioning. There is a new video of the Slovenian superstar on social media where he casually hits a halfcourt shot in an open gym, and people have noticed how slim and fit he looks. Lakers fans on X (formerly Twitter) are looking forward to a new and improved version of Doncic. Doncic is currently preparing to represent Slovenia in the upcoming EuroBasket tournament, which will start late in August and run through mid-September. While Brian Windhorst reported that Doncic may wait until afterward to sign a contract extension with the Lakers, a new report indicated that the superstar may get that extension done in early August before the tournament starts. He will be eligible for a four-year, $229 million extension on Aug. 2.

Eagles' training camp: Jihaad Campbell's versatility could make Zack Baun even better
Jihaad Campbell learning both inside linebacker positions could allow the Eagles to utilize All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun more as a pass rusher in 2025 Zack Baun was initially signed by Philadelphia last off-season to add pass rush prowess and versatility to the Eagles' defense. Baun went on to become a Defensive Player of the Year finalist. The Eagles selected Jihaad Campbell in the draft, and on Saturday, the former Alabama star confirmed that he has been working out at both inside linebacker positions. Campbell learning Baun's spot could provide Philadelphia with a scenario where Nakobe Dean or Jeremiah Trotter Jr. plays the other linebacker spot alongside Campbell, allowing Baun to rush the passer more in 2025. The Erial, New Jersey native was named to the first-team All-SEC in 2024 after leading the team with 117 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. Baun led the top-ranked total defense with 151 tackles and five forced fumbles in 2024. He also added one interception. He was one of two players since at least 2000 with 150-plus tackles and five-plus forced fumbles in a season (the Colts' Zaire Franklin also did so in 2024).

Eagles' training camp: Takeaways and observations from Day 3 of practice
With Day 3 of Philadelphia Eagles' practice completed, we're looking at takeaways and observations from Saturday's session After a Friday morning walkthrough, the Eagles returned to the NovaCare Complex practice field for their third session of training camp. The morning saw Jihaad Campbell make another charge towards the starting lineup, while Jalen Hurts wasn't his most impressive. The session also saw Kenyon Green get in his first practice of the summer, while Jalen Carter missed his third straight day. With Day 3 of practice completed, we're looking at five standouts from Saturday's session. Jalen Hurts' uneven performance Saturday wasn't the most efficient for the quarterback, but the practice reps are about getting acquainted with Kevin Patullo as a player caller. Jihaad Campbell first team reps It's just day three of practice, but Campbell looks sharp, he looks injury-free, and he's getting first-team reps alongside Zack Baun. Campbell has been learning both inside linebacker positions. Dorian Thompson-Robinson is staying in the fight Once thought of as the potential third quarterback following the Eagles' trading Kenny Pickett to Cleveland, Thompson-Robinson has battled rookie Kyle McCord for that spot and had his best practice of the summer. Kelee Ringo baptism by fire The talented cornerback is in a roster battle with Adoree Jackson and has been getting baptized on the outside by A.J. Brown over the first three days. The treatment continued on Saturday. Moro Ojomo continues to impress Ojomo continues to impress and continues to pressure the quarterback and collapse the pockets. Eagles added a new wrinkle Philadelphia could be even stronger in the secondary thanks to the unique versatility of cornerback Cooper DeJean and safety Andrew Mukuba. On Saturday, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio placed the duo in a DIME package, with the Swiss army knives in the slot. Jihaad Campbell could make Zack Baun even more dangerous. Zack Baun was initially signed by Philadelphia last off-season to add pass rush prowess and versatility to the Eagles' defense. Baun went on to become a Defensive Player of the Year finalist.
