Writer proposes Lakers trade for former Defensive Player of the Year
One report indicated that they have had some preliminary trade talks to inquire about the availability of Marcus Smart, a veteran guard who won the Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2021-22 season. Smart is 31 years of age and has been injury-prone, but he could be the type of suffocating defender L.A. needs, and he could also serve as a secondary ball-handler and facilitator.
Jedd Pagaduan of ClutchPoints proposed that the team send guard Gabe Vincent, big man Maxi Kleber and a 2032 second-round draft pick to the Washington Wizards for Smart.
Via ClutchPoints:
"What made Vincent valuable for the Lakers last season was that he showed up for the majority of the season, suiting up in 72 games and providing some much-needed backcourt versatility for the Purple and Gold," Pagaduan wrote. "Giving him up for Smart requires the Lakers to take a risk and have faith that the 2022 DPOY isn't damaged goods quite yet.
"That requires a lot of positive thinking, as the Grizzlies, the team that acquired Smart to be their de facto Dillon Brooks replacement, had to give up a first-rounder just so they could get his contract off the books. Smart hasn't been at his best physically over the past few seasons, picking up a knock here and there which added up to a ton of missed time
"... There is a chance that the 31-year-old won't be able to return to his DPOY form, although even then, he would represent an upgrade over Vincent. ... But at the very least, Smart showed that he can still play solid basketball for stretches. His shooting percentages improved towards the end of last season when he was with the Wizards, and in LA, he won't be tasked to do much of anything other than to defend, hit open shots, and ruffle opponents' feathers.
"The expectation for Smart should the Lakers trade for him would be for him to play at least 65 games, play 20 minutes a night, and act as a key piece of a Purple and Gold squad that aims to recapture the defensive heights they reached last year."
Los Angeles is in a situation where it may not be able to be picky about the player upgrades it pursues on the trade market, given its limited trade assets. Smart has appeared in just 54 games over the last two seasons, but as long as he's available for the entirety of the playoffs, he may be a good player for the team to go after.
This past season, he averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.0 minutes a game. He shot 34.8% from 3-point range, which was his highest figure in that department since the 2018-19 season.
After spending his first nine seasons with the Boston Celtics, Smart has plenty of playoff experience, which includes five trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and one appearance in the NBA Finals. That wouldn't exactly hurt a Lakers team that has gotten younger lately.

Lakers star Luka Doncic gets shoes signed by Aaron Judge in epic superstar crossover
The post Lakers star Luka Doncic gets shoes signed by Aaron Judge in epic superstar crossover appeared first on ClutchPoints. The big buzz surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday was Luka Doncic's new slimmer physique, which was revealed in an article published by Men's Health. Concerns about weight and conditioning have long been viewed as the one thing keeping Doncic from reaching his legendary potential, and fans were understandably ecstatic that he seems to have addressed it. On Monday evening, Doncic was spotted in New York City exchanging pleasantries with New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge. Both Doncic and Judge are under contract with Jordan Brand, and Judge made sure to sign some of Doncic's shoes for him before the Yankees' home game vs the Tampa Bay Rays. (Via YES Network). It was a cool moment for nearby fans in the stands to see two of the biggest superstars in sports having a casual conversation with one another. Big news for the Lakers Luka Doncic didn't exactly dispell the Dallas Mavericks' accusations of poor conditioning and defense during his brief stretch with the Lakers to end last year. Doncic consistently appeared to run out of gas down the stretch of games in the Lakers' disappointing first round exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Minnesota dominated the crunch time minutes of that series. However, if the reports of Doncic's new and improved weight and conditioning are to be believed (and the photos sure look promising), Lakers fans could have a lot more to be excited about in 2025-26 than it initially appeared. Los Angeles is still likely a bench piece or two away from legitimate contention in a crowded Western Conference, but Doncic being in better shape could allow LeBron James to be on cruise control throughout the regular season, which would let him amp things up when the postseason rolls around. In the Men's Health photos, Doncic appeared to be a slim as he's been since his rookie season all the way back in 2018-19, and if that remains the case come October, the Slovenian sensation may finally be able to put together his long-anticipated first MVP season. The Lakers' schedule is set to be released in August. Lakers' Luka Doncic shows love for Jalen Brunson during Yankees visit
The post Lakers' Luka Doncic shows love for Jalen Brunson during Yankees visit appeared first on ClutchPoints. Luka Doncic is in the middle of an offseason that could prove to be a defining point in his career. Traded by the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers due to concerns over his long-term health and work ethic, it looks as though Doncic is dead-set on proving his haters wrong, if the latest footage of his workouts are any indication. But this offseason isn't all work and no play for Doncic, as he spent his free time being in attendance at Yankee Stadium for the New York Yankees' 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday as part of his collaboration with star Aaron Judge. Doncic, of course, is one of the biggest stars in professional sports, so it was only due diligence for the YES broadcast to bring him in for a quick chat. And as a New York sports broadcast channel would have it, the Lakers star was asked about his opinions regarding the New York Knicks. Unsurprisingly, Doncic had nothing but kind words to say, especially when one of his former teammates, reigning Clutch Player of the Year Jalen Brunson, has blossomed into a legitimate MVP-caliber player for the Knicks. 'I like the Knicks. I like my guy JB, you know that. I always cheer for him,' Doncic said, via @NBA_NewYork on X (formerly Twitter). They also asked the Lakers star what he thought of the Knicks' decision to fire Tom Thibodeau. Doncic, who's no stranger to seismic changes, knows the nature of the business and wasn't exactly surprised of this turn of events. 'It's the NBA business; anything can happen,' Doncic added. Doncic is certainly more jaded than ever after the events of last season, and at the very least, he and Brunson can bond over the fact that the Mavericks fumbled them both. Lakers and Knicks benefit from Mavericks' fumbling The Mavericks have lucked into where they are now; as things stand, they have a roster build to contend especially if Cooper Flagg delivers on the hype and Kyrie Irving recovers fully from his ACL tear. But they have fumbled plenty of players over the years, letting go of elite point guards who went on to do bigger and better things after departing from Dallas. In 2004, it was Steve Nash whom the Mavericks let go in free agency. They appeared to make the same mistake 18 years later, when they allowed Brunson to walk to the Knicks. And then in 2025, in a move that still ranks as the most surprising in the history of professional sports, the Mavs traded Doncic to the Lakers. Lakers' Luka Doncic reveals what drove him to be shredded in NBA offseason
The post Lakers' Luka Doncic reveals what drove him to be shredded in NBA offseason appeared first on ClutchPoints. Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic silenced his critics Monday by sharing a new physique. He revealed what drove him to become shredded. The perennial all-star showed up leaner, highlighted by Men's Health magazine. Doncic is also more muscular and toned at the arms. What became his drive to better health? He revealed why during a New York Yankees game. 'I needed a fresh start after everything that happened,' Doncic said to the Yankees broadcast team. He added how this time, he had more time to dive into new workouts. Doncic left basketball for one month to 'focus on other things.' Turns out it involved transforming his body. 'It was a really good fresh and healthy start for me,' Doncic said. What was in Luka Doncic's workouts before second Lakers season? Doncic and the Lakers rattled the league ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline in February. But he still faced critics. The former Dallas Mavericks star was ripped for his lack of conditioning and off the court work ethic. Doncic weighed at a reported 260-pounds after the trade was made. At 6-foot-6, 260-pounds — Doncic looked more like a blocking tight end not required to run routes on third and long. Now he's entering season two with the Lakers ripped. So what type of workouts did Doncic hit? Andrew Heffernan of Men's Health unveiled Doncic did a 90-minute workout. One that blended weight training, agility work and shooting drills. Another workout featured Doncic shooting with a resistance band strapped at his waist. That became part of a circuit workout with his trainer Anže Maček. Doncic needed to trust his lower body too. Trap-bar deadlifts became a part of his routine. Same with sprints and jumps on an outdoor track. Doncic now looks like a natural guard. And he's sent an early message too before Doncic plays his next Lakers game. Now Laker fans will hope his second season in L.A. becomes more stellar than his first.
