Oil Freight Rates Jump in Mideast as Iran Conflict Fans Risk

Mint11 hours ago

(Bloomberg) -- Oil-shipping rates for Middle Eastern routes have spiked after some tanker owners and managers paused offering vessels as they assess risks from Israel's conflict with Iran, fueling concerns over flows from the region.
Key rates for supertankers voyaging from the Middle East to East Asia rose almost 60% in less than a week, according to shipbrokers and charterers, as exporters who had been trying to book ships were met with few offers. They asked not to be identified as they're not authorized to speak publicly.
Meanwhile, some owners with tankers that had been provisionally chartered as of Friday, pending confirmation of the booking, chose not to extend the agreements into the weekend, one of them said.
The global oil market has been transfixed by the conflict in the Middle East, with Israeli strikes on Iranian energy and nuclear infrastructure roiling prices. While the likelihood of significant supply disruptions may be remote at this stage, the stability of shipping in and around the Middle East will be closely watched. The region is home to about a third of the world's production, and major exporters such as Saudi Arabia have limited scope to divert exports if needed.
As hostilities have intensified, tanker owners are monitoring conditions for navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway that links the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Though ship diversions haven't yet been spotted, owners are holding back on fixing new voyages in the Gulf, setting the stage for higher freight rates and the possibility of disruptions.
The benchmark rate for a supertanker capable of hauling 2 million barrels of crude from the Middle East to China — the TD3C route — jumped to 70 to 71 Worldscale points on Monday, up from about 44 last Thursday, before Israel struck Iran, according to shipbrokers. Worldscale points are a percentage of an underlying flat rate, which is set for each major route at the start of the year.
On a per-day basis, chartering costs were near $46,000 on Monday, according to data from the Baltic Exchange. That's up by more than $12,000 from the prior session, the biggest gain since February last year.
Forward-freight agreements — a derivative that allows buyers to lock in future rates — have increased as an indication of caution across the sector. FFAs for the TD3C route rose to around $14.50 a ton at one point on Monday, compared with about $11 before Israel's attacks on Iran.

JPMorgan Chase Sapphire reserve card just got pricier at $795 — here's what the bank is offering at the price

JPMorgan Chase & Co. has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its popular Sapphire Reserve credit card, raising the annual fee from $550 to $795 in a strategic move aimed at further penetrating the high-spending premium travel market. The revamp also includes the introduction of a similarly priced business version, placing JPMorgan squarely in competition with rivals like American Express and Capital One in the race to court affluent customers. The fee revision marks the first increase in five years and comes alongside sweeping enhancements in rewards and exclusive benefits tied to the card's use in travel and dining, reinforcing JPMorgan's ambition to become a full-service travel and lifestyle brand. Travel, Dining at the Heart of New Benefits As part of the Sapphire Reserve transformation, JPMorgan is integrating a number of premium credits into the card's offering. Notable among them is a $500 annual credit towards stays in 'The Edit,' a curated luxury hotel collection, and a $300 credit on OpenTable's exclusive dining experiences—offered only to consumer cardholders. The existing $300 travel credit remains in place, as mentioned in a report by Bloomberg. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Audiologists Furious About New 80€ Device That Makes Hearing Crystal Clear Again Top Trending Today Learn More Undo Also Read | Oil is boiling again: Will $5 gas return to America as Iran-Israel conflict ignites market fears? In terms of rewards, the bank has revamped its points system. Cardholders can now earn eight points per dollar on bookings made via Chase Travel—up from the previous five points for flights and ten for hotels and car rentals. Additionally, the card offers four points per dollar on flights and hotels booked directly (up from three), and three points per dollar spent on dining. Live Events 'This marks the culmination of a five-year journey to redefine our value proposition in the premium-card space,' said Allison Beer, head of card and connected commerce at JPMorgan, as mentioned in a report by Bloomberg. 'We have built a best-in-class travel ecosystem to deliver a seamless end-to-end experience.' Consolidating Acquisitions for a Unified Experience The overhaul is a result of JPMorgan's strategic acquisitions in the past few years, aimed at strengthening its footprint in the travel and lifestyle domain. These include the 2020 acquisition of rewards platform cxLoyalty, the 2021 purchase of restaurant discovery site The Infatuation, and subsequent acquisitions of marketing firm Figg and luxury travel agency Frosch in 2022. JPMorgan has also expanded its airport lounge network, opening six premium lounges across the United States accessible to Sapphire Reserve holders, with more planned in the pipeline. Strategic Positioning in Wealth and Travel Marianne Lake, CEO of consumer and community banking, emphasized JPMorgan's broader strategy during the bank's recent investor meetings. 'Travel is at the core of our card strategy,' she stated, adding that the firm has more than doubled travel volume from 2021 to 2024, underscoring its deepening commitment to the sector, as per a report by Bloomberg. Lake also noted that half of new Chase customers enter the ecosystem through the card business. JPMorgan hopes the Sapphire Reserve will serve as a gateway to additional services like self-directed investing and wealth management—core elements of CEO Jamie Dimon's long-term expansion strategy. 'Once customers come in through Sapphire Reserve, they deepen across the ecosystem—whether it's investments, banking, or wealth management,' added Beer. Over 200 Kannadigas stranded in Iran: Indo-Iran Chamber chief

Bengaluru, June 17 (UNI) More than 200 people from Karnataka, including students and businessmen, are currently stranded in Iran following the ongoing Israeli bombings, Syed Hakim Raza, president of the Indo-Iran Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said on Tuesday. "Among those stranded are over 15 students pursuing medical education and more than 50 engaged in religious studies, while several businessmen from Karnataka are also caught in the conflict-affected region, he told UNI. Raza said that the Indian Embassy has begun relocating medical students from Tehran to Qom City as a precautionary measure. "The relocation has been underway for the past day. The embassy is in constant communication with us and has assured that once land border routes are accessible, they will inform us immediately," he said. The Indo-Iran Chamber, Raza said, is actively coordinating relief efforts. "Our directors are stationed on the ground. Several of my own family members – nieces, nephews, and brothers' children involved in business – are in Iran. Naturally, there is concern, but things are under control at the moment," he stated. He estimated that over 10,000 Indian nationals are currently in Iran, spread across major cities like Tehran, Qom, Bandar Abbas, and Chabahar. "A large number of people from Karnataka are now concentrated in Qom. As soon as any window opens via land borders, we are ready to act," he added. Raza reaffirmed that the Indo-Iran Chamber, in coordination with the Indian embassy, is doing its utmost to support stranded citizens. "We are fully involved in the evacuation and support process, ensuring that everyone who needs assistance is being attended to," he said. UNI BDN PRS
