Stars lend glamour to ‘Oscars of science' Breakthrough Prizes

Telegraph06-04-2025

Gwyneth Paltrow, Alicia Keys and Lizzo were among the stars giving science some pizzazz at this year's Breakthrough Prizes in Los Angeles on Saturday.
Nicknamed the 'Oscars of Science', the six awards of $3 million (£2.3 million) each are given for advances in life sciences, physics and mathematics.
Some of the biggest names in tech, film and music walked the red carpet in Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, lending their glamour to the event.
Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos all flashed a smile, despite a torrid week in which their companies lost billions in the market turmoil caused by Donald Trump's tariff announcements.
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch, 94, was pictured with his wife Elena Zhukova, 67, whom he married last summer. His third wife, Wendi Murdoch, 56, was also in attendance.
Other attendees included Zoe Saldana, the Oscar-winning actress, Paris Hilton, the socialite, Gal Gadot, the star of Disney's ill-fated Snow White remake, and Lily Collins, the Emily in Paris actress.
Musicians Lizzo, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera also came.
The scientists who developed Ozempic, the pioneering weight-loss drug, were awarded a Breakthrough Prize.
Another went to David Liu, an American molecular biologist, for developing two precise gene editing tools to help people with severe genetic diseases.
A further life science prize was given for groundbreaking research on multiple sclerosis.
More than 13,500 researchers from Cern, Europe's particle physics laboratory, took home a joint award for testing the modern theory of particle physics.
The Breakthrough Prizes were founded in 2012 and are sponsored by Yuri Milner, a Russian–Israeli billionaire, and tech entrepreneurs including Mark Zuckerberg, the chief executive of Meta.
This year's prizes were given at a fraught moment for US science, as Donald Trump's government stripped funding for institutions like the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
'The NIH is a treasure, not just for this country but for the world,' said Mr Liu, after winning his award.
'Trying to dismantle the heart of what supports science in this country is like burning your seed corn.'

'Woke' Rachel Zegler makes barbed comment about Broadway after shock Tony Awards 2025 snub and Snow White flop

Rachel Zegler made a barbed comment about Broadway as she shared a series of snaps in honor of the Tony Awards 2025 on Sunday. The Snow White star, 24, was snubbed for her Broadway debut in the revival of Romeo and Juliet in which she starred with Heartstopper's Kit Connor. Zegler shared a message for her fellow Broadway stars, adding that a turn on the Great White Way 'is not for the faint of heart.' 'I have the most respect for the people being honored tonight – doing anything, especially a 2-3 hour marathon such as a Broadway musical or play,' Rachel began. 'It is not for the faint of heart,' she explained. 'We are athletes in our own right and tonight is truly a celebration of all the hard work – both on stage and off – that goes on in these iconic spaces.' She added, 'I love my job so d*mn much.' Rachel missed out on a Best Actress nod, while Sadie Sink, Sarah Snook, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, Laura Donnelly and Mia Farrow all earned nods. So far, Zegler is best known for the box office flop Snow White. Prior to its release, Snow White was mired in controversy due to comments from Zegler and the absence of the iconic song 'Someday My Prince Will Come.' In an effort to be more progressive, Disney also changed the dwarves to be called 'magical creatures.' Critics of the remake first jumped on Disney for the decision to cast Zegler in the role due to her Colombian ancestry. The original fairytale revealed that the princess is given her name because her skin is 'as white as snow.' At the time, Zegler said that the origin story had changed, and in Disney's new version the princess earns the name due to a snowstorm she survived as a child. She then came under fire for criticizing original animation when she called it 'dated' during a red carpet interview with Extra TV in 2022. She eventually walked back her comments and assured fans that the love story would be 'integral' to the remake's plot. Disney fans then expressed discontent at Zegler when she said she was 'scared' of the original version as a child and only watched it one time. Although the Disney remake has been widely considered a flop, Rachel has already lined up next role. She will be starring opposite Marisa Tomei, 60, of My Cousin Vinny fame, in her next movie role. In the upcoming comedy-drama She Gets It From Me, Zegler will play the daughter of the Tomei's wild, unruly and free-spirited character, according to the synopsis reported by Variety. She Gets It From Me 'follows Nicky (Zegler), whose engagement celebration turns into a search for her pill-popping, ex-punk rocker birth mother Charlotte (Tomei)', per the outlet. 'Together, the two embark on an anarchic mother-and-daughter journey to reconnect after being estranged.' The synopsis reads: 'YouTube is packed with tearful family reunions, but nobody films the messy aftermath.' Rachel was snubbed this week as Tony nominations were announced and she did not make the list for her role in the Broadway revival of Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet. Seen here October 24, 2024 The forthcoming film, directed by Julia von Heinz, is based on a true story. Many of Zegler's fans showed their support for the actress as they praised her for staying 'booked and busy.' The Snow White remake was heavily hyped up until its release, however, it has faced a string of controversies after Zegler's controversial comments about the original cartoon film.

Demi Moore told 'this is not ok' as she divides fans after rescuing ducklings

Oscar nominated actress Demi Moore was slammed by some fans for how she interacted with the three baby ducks she rescued, amid concern for the welfare of the animals Actress Demi Moore has divided fans after revealing she has rescued three baby ducks. The 62-year-old animal lover, who is said to have nine pet dogs, took to Instagram to share a cute snap with the ducklings. Tucking the baby mallards into her jacket, a smiling Demi shared they had already made friends with her Chihuahua Pilaf, who she often shares photos of. Her daughters and granddaughter were also spotted getting to know the ducklings in a series of pics posted to her social media account. ‌ The Substance star captioned the post: "Duck, duck… Pilaf! We rescued three orphaned baby mallard ducklings! With the help and guidance of my local vet we are working to nurture them until they are old enough to be reintroduced to their natural habitat. It has been a messy joy, but Pilaf is loving her new friends." ‌ Though some of her celebrity followers like Paris Hilton and Jennifer Garner commented with heart emojis and Tom Hanks wife Rita Wilson wrote "Oh my goodness! How sweet is this?" - not everybody agreed with it. READ MORE: Demi Moore and Bruce Willis' daughter Rumer, 36, defends taking baths with her sisters One follower wrote: "This is not ok. Wild mallards should be rehabbed by wildlife rehabber. Her vet should have known that. Sorry.. cute but imprinted…" Agreeing, another replied: "Correct. Handling these ducks is not a good rehab practice. They should NEVER be subjected to all that handling." A third person commented: "Yeah this is messed up, these ducks need to go to a wildlife rehab." A fourth said: "Just because a celebrity thinks its cute doesn't make it right." While a fifth asked: "What happened to mom! If they imprint to you - there is no way you should release them. That will work against them in the wild as they follow humans around. Talk to a wildlife rehab facility." But others leapt to Demi's defence, with one writing: "Those ducks will most likely live because of her. And all you can do is b***h and complain. Get a life and follow someone else." Another chimed in: "What if a rehab person is actually filming this before taking them away….what if this is being filmed at rehab facility….what if….. I would give a person benefit of doubt before criticizing [sic] or attacking them. Three little ducklings following a person. That is all that you can say with certainty." ‌ The Mirror has reached out to Demi's reps for further comment on this story. Demi is known for her love of animals and is often spotted with what seems to be her favourite dog Pilaf. The pint-sized pooch - said to be a similar size to a guinea pig - even accompanied her famous owner to a recent awards ceremony. ‌ Pilaf was seen walking the red carpet with Demi at the Film Independent Spirit Awards back in February. Movie star Demi has joked Pilaf's fame is now so big it's eclipsed her own. She said: "The truth is, I am her accessory." She has also appeared on Jimmy Fallon's chat show with Demi. Introducing Pilaf to the audience, Demi shared: "This is Pilaf, the little mouse. She is a pound and a half. She's the runt of her litter. She's a magical creature." Jimmy replied: "She is. I met her backstage and her tongue permanently hangs out." Demi replied: "It does. She lost the teeth that hold it in, but it's part of her charm. Demi admitted she also sleeps with her dogs - and that might be why she's currently single. She shared: "If anybody saw my nighttime routine, if it was filmed, they would really see how eccentric I am. "I have to prop pillows so the ones that are this size have the ability to get under the covers. I have two beds for the little ones so that they have the beds within the bed. Hence why I'm single!"
